Escape into Oblivion

May 11, 2021

This webtoon could've easily been S-tier kind of good. I mean, not only is the art style is phenomenal but the characters and plot are so incredibly interesting! But that ending . . . oh boy.

In regards to the art, there's a purpose behind the color palette, and according to the timeline and scene of the story, the colors adapt to fit the mood. And, overall, I loved the character designs. Easy on the eyes, nice anatomy, fluid movement- it's great, no complaints here.

The characters are also amazingly done. They're not necessarily likable but they feel oh so real. And that's what matters. We have our MC who's a coward; he runs from his problems, and that started when he began to run from his past and childhood trauma. He's plagued by guilt and goes down a self-destructive path with little respect for himself. He's a terribly pathetic character that somehow makes me empathize and pity him at the same time.

The psycho love interest is the sweet guy from the MC's past that becomes obsessed with vengeance because of the MC's cowardice. This dude goes to juvie, becomes a gangster, and is a stalker on top of all that. Weirdly, his 'crazy' side is very subtle throughout the story, so it's even more eerie and gripping. He's also not unlikeable... he garners a lot of pity especially when we know how much trauma he probably went through.

So what's the problem? It's the ending. This could've been a 10/10 read, but unfortunately, the end bumped it down a bit. See, the main story does a good job of showing and not telling. But the end? My god, everything happened at the speed of light with nothing fleshed out. We were simply just shown the order of events, instead of actually going through them. Things got resolved in 1 chapter and it was too unsatisfactory because everything else is so perfect. Without sugarcoating it, this was a major letdown, and I'm really sad that the author seemed to give up at the very last second.

8/10 story
7.5/10 art
9/10 characters
8/10 overall
