Defenders of Space

Feb 12, 2022

I have no idea what to write here. Do I trash this movie for the utterly boring plot, the obviously-ripped off designs of EVERYTHING, the absolutely atrocious dub (the only way I could find it), and the even worse animation? Or do I praise it to high heaven as some sort of So-Bad-It's-Good masterpiece? Because even for all the absolute horrifically bad production values of it, I was still greatly entertained. Mostly BY the horrifically bad production values... and everything else. Basically, if you enjoy camp, or stuff of the So-Bad-It's-Good variety, give this one a try. You will probably love it. If... Hugtto! Pretty Cure

Oct 29, 2021

I said I'd review a Precure I actually like. Where better to start than the top... Bottom Line: Hugtto is absolute top Precure. The absolute best. So best, I hesitate to recommend it as a starting point for anyone looking to get into Precure, because nothing before or since can compare. Heartcatch comes pretty close though. This, my friends, this is it. This is Precure firing on all cylinders. This is proof that what is primarily a kid show aimed at tweens with the intent of selling merch can also be entertaining, deep, and meaningful to a wide and varied audience of all ages. This is Precure with the... See full review

Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure

Oct 26, 2021

Bottom Line: TroPre is aggressively average and, to me at least, seemingly aimed at a younger crowd than usual. Any given episode is still dumb fun, but for such an ocean-adjacent show, there isn't much depth to be found here. Still, there are some real gems buried in the show. That's an odd thing to say when reviewing a kids' show like Precure, produced with clear intent to sell toys to tweens and pre-teens, but it's also a thing Precure has accomplished many times before. I knew going in that this was going to be a silly season, the OP and pre-season leaks were enough to prove that. The show even... See full review

Smile Pretty Cure!

May 25, 2020

Well, gee, I noticed there was only one proper review for Smile and three for something which doesn't exist. So, let me just get this out of the way right at the beginning: Smile Pretty Cure! is the best comedy in the franchise (not the best show, that would be Hugtto). In fact, it's a damned good comedy show in general. Smile had me laughing out loud a lot. (Cure Gorilla! LOL) But be warned: Smile also features one of the most sick, twisted villains in the franchise and the Mood Whiplash he causes when he gets serious will make your head spin. The TLDR version of this review: Go watch it. It's not... See full review

Star Twinkle Pretty Cure

Jan 28, 2020

Coming on the heels of the epic success of Hugtto as it did, Star Twinkle had its work cut out for it. Hugtto didn't just raise the bar, it launched it into space, which incidentally is where Star Twinkle headed. Precure is however, still a children's show, so one must temper their expectations. But not this much. Precure has had weak seasons before. Happiness Charge is the one people love to hate. I haven't seen it. Mahou Tsukai as well. KKPCALM was, truth be told, kind of a slog to get through, and demonstrates decisively why there should never be more than five Cures. But I'd rather watch it all again... See full review

World Fool News Part II

May 9, 2017

I watched and enjoyed the 2014 season, but the new season just doesn't quite work for me. I can't even quite put my finger on why. I think the newness helped before, maybe this is just one of those things that only works once.

Rozen Maiden Zur├╝ckspulen

Jul 22, 2015

Certainly a very different show from the previous ones. No guarantee you will like this just because you liked them. Rozen Maiden Z (Hah) tracks closer to the manga than the previous shows, from what I understand. I never read the manga, so I'm evaluating the show purely on its own merits. I enjoyed it as much, if not more than the previous adaptation. Bottom line, I give it a solid four stars.  This one deals with an adult Jun, and has a definite feeling of despair running through it. Not sure I'd call it grimdark, but it's definitely somber. In this show, kid-Jun chose NOT to "wind it" and... See full review
