Bu Sha (Light Novel)

May 29, 2019

I really enjoyed this series. The plot was intriguing and there was more attention played to character's emotions and inner life than in most light novels. It's genuinely engaging and one really cares about the characters. The only reason that it doesn't get a higher grade is the author's unfortunate tendency to treat al female characters as comic relief or lesser side characters, which is particularly surprising given that the author is also female.

Because all the author's works contain elements of satire or parody, one could argue that all the characters have comedic elements, but when it's the male characters, they're still competent and integral to the plot, whereas the female characters either lack control over their abilities, appear minimally when they ARE described as competent, or are to swayed by their emotions to actualy accomplish their goals.

The males, on the otherhand, either start with godlike abilities or acquire them, comedic characters or not. The females are simply there as romantic interests or to exhibit maternal tendencies. When we are told the females are strong, that's always undermined in some way. Still, they're treated as important people by the male characters and there's no ecchi fan service at all.

That being said, this series is very likable, none the less, and I would recommend it to anyone. The main character is particularly interesting, as are his interactions with others, and he grows and changes through the series, which is often not the case with characters with powerful abilities. Parts of the series are very moving. Recommended.

If you like this one, you may also like the more overtly comedic Legend of Sun Knight by the same author, which is a really fun read.
