Chainsaw Man

Nov 30, 2022

"Wait...that's me." In what's been hyped as the second coming of Christ in the anime community, Chainsaw Man lands with a splash. Everything oozes style, from what I consider the best OP of the year to the animation and art style. I'm not going to poke the CGI discussion too much, but I think it serves its purpose to the presentation, especially in the fight scenes. Speaking of fight scenes, they are a highlight, with the animation going extremely hard and we're only at the beginning of the story. A lot of manga readers have been hyping this adaptation, but I feel that we've only scratched the... See full review

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun

Sep 12, 2022

"I gave some to everyone else, too." Made In Abyss S2 is a masterclass in storytelling, despite how much messed up and horrible sh*t goes down. Ever since the trailer dropped, people were saying this season would be even darker than the movie, which I didn't think was possible. But it is and is an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. The story gets more intriguing with every layer and the Golden City is no exception. The backstory to this place is horrifying but despite that, is a fascinating watch regardless. There's something to be said about the author and his obsession with torturing kids... See full review

SPY x FAMILY

May 21, 2022

Goes without saying, but this is a BIG contender for anime of the year. SPY x FAMILY is a hilarious ride, filled with great animation and music, meme faces and great comedy with a bit of character drama. Loid is basically anime James Bond, with his spy adventures and gadgets and fast cars. He is the perfect mix of stoic yet caring and he is so fun to watch. Yor is an assassin who seems clumsy at everything apart from her profession, interpreting every situation as a moment to kill someone. It's great. And of course, there's Anya, the meme icon. She is so endearing to watch, and her interactions with... See full review

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom: Part II

Feb 20, 2022

Politically-motivated Harem is a new genre, I guess. Realist Hero Part II has bigger stakes and a more focused plot this time round, but suffers from really slow pacing. For example, a lot of the narrative focuses on King Souma's troubles after the war with Amidonia, but it takes 3 episodes for anything to be established. The interactions are more interesting this time, with a standout being a conversation between Souma and the disgraced general, Carmine. The problem is that for every unique and interesting scene, it's followed up by an episode with nothing going on at all. Also, the Harem continues to... See full review

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Entertainment District Arc

Feb 6, 2022

This arc is 100% popcorn entertainment, and for once it's a good thing.  Demon Slayer has never been a masterclass in writing, as it usually follows every fantasy shounen cliché imaginable. However, it does so with pride, with the Entertainment District Arc boasting some of the best fight scenes in anime (but are stretched out a bit too much). The story takes a backseat in favour of fight scenes, with a bit of sleuthing at the start before going into what we'd expect from this show. The upper rank demons are a force to be reckoned with, I just wish that the same life-or death scenario... See full review

86: Eighty-Six - Part II

Jan 1, 2022

86 Part II still has a lot of the same scathing commentary and themes that made Part I so good, but is lacking behind in a few other areas.  The story is a lot more scattered this time around, as we follow Shin and his group in their new roles in Giad, as well as the military office politics going on there and Lena trying to fit in with her new team. The character writing is mostly the same - sharp witty dialogue that is only let down by the way it is presented. We jump back and forth between Shin and the gang and the Giad military officers so much it's hard to keep up sometimes. That said, the... See full review

takt op.Destiny

Nov 23, 2021

takt op.Destiny definitely feels like the underdog of the season, which is odd since it's produced by MAPPA, one of the biggest studios right now. That said, it isn't perfect, but whar it lacks in plot it makes up for in spades with gorgeous animation and sound design. First off, the story seems to be heading to a fairly straightfoward conclusion, with Takt getting to play his piece and probably joining the ranks and becoming an official Conductor. It's nothing terribly exciting, but moments such as the duet or fight with Hell keep you more engaged than bored. The animation is stellar, and the fight... See full review

The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat

Nov 18, 2021

The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat is a show that is from the same author as Redo of Healer, and yes, the influences from that dumpster fire are seeping into this show as well. The only positives worth mentioning are the sound and animation, which are pretty decent, with a couple of nice shots, but that's it. The characters and story are plagued with issues which prevent this show from being a good action show about the world of assassins.  First off, the girls that the MC picks up eventually form a harem, where each of them are of varying ages... Star Wars: Visions

Sep 22, 2021

Gorgeous animation and a lot of fresh ideas are what Star Wars: Visions brings to the table, but it also lacks in a few other areas. Some of the best episodes are the ones that let the action take over and does a better job of presenting that episode's idea than clumsy dialogue ever would. Unfortunately, some episodes are better than others for this exact reason, as a few try to grab an emotional hook over the space of 15-20 minutes, which is just too short. Still, Visions is a blast to watch, as you can forgive some clumsy storytelling just to watch some of the best fights any Star Wars property has... See full review

My Hero Academia 5

Sep 11, 2021

(As of Episode 23) I added a previous review going up to Episode 13, but a lot has changed in my opinion of this season. First off, MVA is done really well. Is it not as gory as the manga? Sure, but that doesn't knock it down. The only complaint of MVA I really have is that it is condensed for the sake of season length, which could have easily been avoided by cutting down the training arc and especially the Endeavour agency arc. The now complete origin of Tomura Shigaraki and extra depth for characters like Twice and Toga are especially well done, and the Meta Liberation Army is a sinister threat and a... See full review

To Your Eternity

Aug 30, 2021

For the first 13 episodes, pretty much everyone was in agreement that To Your Eternity was a masterpiece. However, the island arc left quite a lot of viewers divided due to some characters as well as the payoff of that arc. For me, while the island arc could never live up to the one before, it was not nearly enough to drag the show down. Fushi is an excellent protagonist, and Hayase becoming one of the most hateable villains next to the guy from FMA: Brotherhood. The side characters varied in quality a bit, with Gugu, Parona, March and Rean being excellent while the rest ranged from great to just kinda... See full review

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War?

Jul 31, 2021

Kaguya-sama: Love is War? is a fantastic sequel to the breakout first season. If season 1 was the definition of overthinking, then this was the definition of romantic struggles. There's less "war" this time around and instead the focus is on Shinomiya and Shirogane's true feelings for each other. The comedy mostly lands, and the other two members of the council are better here than they were before, as Ishigami in particular didn't get enough development last season, but they more than made up for that this time around. Some other returning faces were great to see, as well as the addition of... See full review

When They Cry: Higurashi

Jul 22, 2021

When They Cry: Higurashi is a gore-filled thrill ride, but like so many mystery anime, fails to stick the landing. Let's start with the positives - of which there are many. The overall mystery and concepts are great, and reminded me of a cross between Re:Zero and Persona 4 with the timeline stuff and murder mystery that spans the series. The characters are great. with Rena, Shion and Rika being the standouts. However, since the show is split into arcs, some of these are background ones to add more information to the history of Hinamizawa. The ending arc drops so many twists that it gets hard to keep track... See full review

Talentless Nana

Jul 7, 2021

Talentless Nana is a show that manages to keep track of so many "rug-sweeping" moments, but it sometimes hurts its roots in the process. First off, the premise of this show is very similar to franchises like Danganronpa as well as the mobile game Among Us. However, the show does manage to carve its own identity, maintaining a great balance of rooting for Nana as well as mourning the loss of some of the purest side characters imaginable.

The cast is pretty memorable, with the fakeout in episode 1 of the MC being Nana all along serving as a great hook. Even if you knew the real... See full review

Assassination Classroom 2nd Season

Jul 6, 2021

INCOMING SPOILERS! Consider yourself warned. Assassination Classroom Season 2 is a step up in every way compared to the first season. The first season did a great job with the foundation of the story, but only made about half of the cast memorable. This season smashes that into the ground, and while not every character is treated equally in writing standards or screen time, they are a lot more engaging than in Season 1. The core four of Korosensei, Akane, Nagisa and Kaede are not the only ones hogging the limelight this time around, though the season does focus back to them in the ending (more on that... Rent-a-Girlfriend

Jul 4, 2021

Rent-A-Girlfriend is so inconsistent it hurts. The plot is so shallow and surface-level, which would be fine considering it's a romance anime, but this one stings due to the fact that there are hints of compelling characters and story moments sprinkled within all the mediocrity. The MC is one of the most unlikeable in recent memory, as he is so baffling to try to understand. The choices he makes give you whiplash, as he's either so kind to one girl or a total a-hole to another. On the subject of girls, the girlfriends are almost all well-written, with the exception of Mami, who has zero redeeming... See full review

Orange

Jun 30, 2021

If this were based on the finale alone, the score would be much higher. Unfortunately, Orange wobbles uncertainly towards a masterful conclusion. Animation and Sound: I'll lump these together since its pretty standard, with a somewhat forgettable OP. The animation rarely gets a moment to shine, but is decent enough that it isn't distracting.  Characters: Overall, the characters are solid, but it is what they go through that irks me more (but we'll get to that). The group of friends are a close bunch, with Kakeru, Naho and Suwa being the standouts. Their dynamic is great, both in the high school... See full review

Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro

Jun 29, 2021

The art room kinda sus huh Seriously though, Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro is a really fun ride. This might be up for debate, but this show has one of the better tsundere characters, as opposed to something like Horimiya or Toradora, which had a weaker story in favour of far more compelling characters. The characters in this show aren't anything to scoff at, though. The lead pair of Nagatoro and Senpai are great, delivering a refreshing spin on this trope, which has been done to death at this point. There aren't very many characters in the show, with the main focus being on the little group of... See full review

Angel Beats!

Jun 16, 2021

Angel Beats! is a fun ride, with excellent music and animation, but is dragged down by both its characters and ending. Characters: The cast is a real mixed bunch, some amazing members with Otonashi, Tenshi, Hinata and Yurippe while the rest range from whatever to downright annoying. This is especially the case with the rest of the Battlefront, as most of them don't get enough screen time in order to flesh them out. However, there are exceptions, with the two lead singers of GirlDeMo having solid arcs and are well-rounded characters. The real highlights of course, are the four main characters, who are top... Clannad After Story

Jun 13, 2021

I stopped watching after a certain episode, but by no means did I hate the show. Clannad After Story is a huge improvement on the original, Clannad, in almost every way, adding more depth to its well-rounded cast. This show melts and breaks your heart at the same time. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go and cry in the corner.

Clannad

Jun 11, 2021

Clannad is a really heartfelt anime about a group of friends bonding over various issues, whilst grappling with their past and gradually building their bonds with each other. The main character, Tomoya, feels like a persona protagonist with even more sass, but he is by no means a bad character.  Animation and sound, while simplistic, is very solid and there is very little wrong with it.  The one big complaint i would have with Clannad is that one character, arguably the most compelling of the bunch, gets almost written out of the show entirely, and the writers never give them closure. Overall... See full review

ERASED

May 27, 2021

ERASED is an anime that has some of the strongest moments in any mystery anime, but is dragged down by its characters, but we'll get to that. Story: The plot of ERASED is a mixed bag, as the episodes set in the future aren't nearly as interesting as the mystery in 1988 surrounding the disappearance of Kayo, Aya and Hiromi. The reveal of the kidnapper's identity was great, however they were also the only option left when any and all potential suspects had been whittled down to around 3 or 4. The ending gets a lot of flack, but I found it to be a satisfying ending, if a little too convienient. Animation and... See full review
