Anime Review #17 - FLCL

[ completed on wednesday 21-06-02 ]

Spoiler free review.

FLCL, or Fooly Cooly, takes a unique approach to the coming of age story, following a boy named Naota who’s feeling jaded about his life. One day, a rambunctious woman wielding a blue electric bass guitar and riding a moped, comes literally crashing into his life, and what ensues is the story of puberty, falling in love, jealousy, embarrassment, excitement, rebelliousness, and much more! (..aye feelin horny :P)

I had heard a lot of good things from furi kuri foo foo guri guri, but I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when I sat down to actually watch it. Even though there are only 6 episodes in the OVA, so much happens in a single episode that it feels longer when you actually watch it. The character dynamics can also be a little strange at times, but the overall feel of the show evokes a sense of nostalgia and warmth with its visual imagery and aesthetic shots. The score was also super unique, and there were a lot of jamming songs throughout the length of the show. I was vibing.

((Fooly Cooly is honestly the kind of show that Brennan the film major who loves Pulp Fiction would tell you is his favorite anime and that you just wouldn't understand the true meaning behind Haruko’s wrestling glove vag. It's also the only anime he's seen aside from Your Name.))

I’m not really the kind of person who’s good at seeing the deeper meaning in stuff, but I could clearly see that the symbolism was there. On the surface level, the characters silly antics may seem all over the place, almost as if the writers just decided that anything goes in this world and that the plot doesn't need to make sense, but these antics boil down to deeper meanings... which you can google once you’ve completed the show... like I did… lol.

FLCL is the kind of show that everyone should at least give a chance. It may be a bit too fever-dreamy for some people, but it’s a fun, quirky little show if you have 2 hours of free time in your day to devote to watching it lol.

I’m not good at writing reviews, even though I insist on doing so every time, but I also wanted to add that Haruko reminded me of Snoopy dog from the Peanuts gang. They radiate the same energy in my opinion… anyway. USSR.

Thanks for reading. I made the review short this time. Fufufufu kukukuku
