I am torn between either loving it or hating it. Overall the anime is slightly above average. This is a spoiler-free review.

Story

The premise is original in the sense that we get to see the story develop from a “realistic” point of view. What I mean by this is that people are bound to make mistakes and we never really see this in a story. We always see the protagonist making the right decisions and then a happy ending…. I believe the fact that the story changes constantly and shows the mistakes of the protagonist is a very good quality in the plot. As much as hate cliffhangers, there is no doubt this was key in keeping me interested in this anime. They did a very good job at making the best of the plot twists to keep the audience intrigued.

Moving on to the not so positive qualities of the anime, I would like to say the pace is a bit slow. At times I wondered if something was truly going to happen at the end as the plot seemed to get repetitive and lost purpose mid-way. Likewise, the ending was very bland. The plot had huge potential but at the end the story fell short. I strongly believe that now that the last episode was released, the rating of this anime will drop significantly. Granted the manga/light novel probably goes into more depth and gives us an actual ending while tying some lose ends, the first season of Re: Zero left me disappointed by the end.

Animation

I liked the animation for this anime. I did not think it was particularly unique in any way but it was fun to see the development of a “new” world with new creatures and races. The characters were okay and the landscapes were nice. The anime was a bit too graphic for me as far as blood and injuries go but otherwise it was average.

Sound

I loved the opening and ending themes, very catchy! The voices of the characters were nice and fitting for their roles. Music used throughout to set the mood was a bit repetitive.

Characters

I think the anime had a lot of potential to develop the unique characters that are seen in the story but the development of most of them fell short as well. Even Emilia’s story is not fully developed and she is the main character in question…

Subaru is really the protagonist of this story. I will start by saying I did not like him, so this was not a strong character in my opinion.  His sense of “I have to be the hero” made me sick, it was not original at all! How he comes to be liked by others is my only guess. I would have preferred another character to be the protagonist as I just did not relate to him or anything he did throughout the story.

Characters I liked included Beatrice, Roswaal, and Puck. Too bad their roles were rather brief and there is no much background story for them as well as many of the other ones we see throughout the anime.

Overall

I recommend this anime to anyone that likes action, strategy, and different worlds. If you don’t mind gory scenes and a slow pace, you mind find this anime enjoyable. Be warned the story is a bit slow and there are practically cliffhangers in every episode. The plot is intriguing if you have the patience and there are tons of interesting characters that may be appealing to various people.

8/10 story
7/10 animation
