Highschool of the Dead

Jun 24, 2014

Story
The basic premise of High School of the Dead has been covered by countless other writers/directors/etc: a zombie outbreak turns the world into a hellish warzone and we follow a group of survivors as they try to figure out what's going on and survive. HSOTD covers this really well - it had me hooked from episode 1 and I didn't lose interest in the story once throughout the series. Nothing majorly original has been added and it was fairly easy to figure out what was going to happen (it's one of those animes.. the ones where nobody ever seems to die if they're important to the... Future Diary

Jun 18, 2014

Story
The basic gist of Mirai Nikki is that God (or Deus) is dying and he needs to choose a successor; to do this he chooses a group of people and gives them 'future diaries' which hold various different properties (e.g. Random Diary; Investigation Diary; Picture Diary...). He then gathers them together and informs them that they are involved in a sort of Battle Royale in which the last survivor will take all and become the new God. Although this sort of storyline is fairly popular and has been done before (Battle Royale, Hunger Games...), Mirai Nikki adds a certain flair to the whole... See full review

D.Gray-man

Jul 16, 2013

Story D.Gray-Man follows 15 year old Allen Walker's journey to defeat the entity known as the Millenium Earl with the help of his comrades from the Black Order. Those working for this Order are referred to as Exorcists and their main objective is to find and protect the shards of Innocence which are scattered around the globe. The Earl is hell bent on destroying all Innocence and the story essentially centres around the struggle between the Noah Clan (under the Earl's control) and the Black Order. The underlying concept for D.Gray-Man isn't all that original - in fact, a lot of the time it... See full review

Hayate the Combat Butler! Can't Take My Eyes Off You

Mar 31, 2013

Story There wasn't that much story to this anime; to sum it up without spoilers, Nagi, Tsugumi and Hayate are involved in a conflict over a pocket-watch called the Black Camellia, which has magical properties. To tell you any more would be to risk giving out a lot of spoilers. Before I go any further I have to stress that I haven't watched any Hayate the Combat Butler before this, and I gathered that it's better to have some context before watching Can't Take My Eyes Off You. However, I still enjoyed this series - it was very mediocre but there was a lot of comedy, a bit of romance and a small... See full review

Soul Eater

Mar 29, 2013

Story Wow. Well, the story is very good; it does tend to follow the standard shounen pattern to an extent, but it's incredibly well-executed. Basically we have weapons (which are basically people with the power to turn into a weapon), and meisters who have the power to wield them. They're enrolled at Shibusen, which was established to prevent the demon god from taking the world. The story flows quite well and is made really compelling by the characters; without the uniqueness of the characters and the brilliant, Tim Burton-esque art style, Soul Eater probably wouldn't be all that special. However... See full review

Saikano

Dec 12, 2012

I'm going to start this one off by acknowledging the fact that my review isn't based off the full series and therefore isn't as reliable as a lot of the other reviews on this site. If that annoys you, don't follow my advice and take my opinions as ill-founded. Story Stupid, clumsy girl (Chise) is made into part-robot weapon... boyfriend (Shuuji) tries to protect. Girl is constantly annoying with what seems to be an attempt at adorable clumsiness. Shoots stuff out of her dress and grows weird robot parts occasionally. Goes boom boom smash and cries. I couldn't watch it right to the end even though I paid... See full review

Chibits

Dec 12, 2012

Story Sumomo and Kotoko realise Chii has left without something and proceed to chase her. It's quite funny near the end but the rest is just Sumomo screeching and being her usual irritating self. Animation As always with Chobits, the animation's good and the characters are colourful. Sound I had to watch it dubbed - never again. Awful. Music was good as usual. Characters Well, Sumomo and Kotoko were the main focus in this one - if you like Sumomo (as most fans do), you'll love this. It is cute to be fair, and it has Kotoko in who's always funny/adorable. TL;DR Is there a need for this... See full review

Air Gear

Dec 12, 2012

Story Air Gear isn't exactly story-heavy - Ikki sees a hot girl zooming around on her ATs, lets his hormones persuade him to borrow a pair and take the sport up himself. He aims to be the best; the anime ends before you really find out if he actually gets anywhere with that. Despite being 25 episodes long (although there are a few OVAs so maybe they'll elaborate). Character development is nearly at zero for most of it, but that doesn't matter all that much for a sports anime and I still enjoyed it immensely. Speaking of sports anime, it's called Air Gear and yet it doesn't focus enough on the... See full review

Pokemon

Dec 9, 2012

I'll warn you in advance: this review will most likely be tainted by the nostalgia I have towards Pokemon - as is the case with many other people, I grew up with it and therefore have a soft spot for it. Story Pokemon follows a formula to a great extent - Ash comes across new Pokemon, battles it or helps it to battle another Pokemon, may or may not catch it. There isn't really that much story to the series. That would be very annoying in an adult anime, but we have to remember that Pokemon is very definitely aimed at children. I'll go as far as to say it's more of a cartoon than an... See full review

Perfect Blue

Dec 9, 2012

Story The story is basically an observation of how obsessive and extreme people can become when they want to preserve a certain image of a celebrity. It's fairly slow-moving but if it was paced any faster almost all of the atmosphere and build-up would be taken away. It keeps you gripped and constantly wanting to know who this stalker is and what he wants/why he's going to such lengths. Through a lot of the film I was completely unsure on whether what Mima's seeing is real or if she's hallucinating due to intense paranoia. Metaphors and illusions are used brilliantly and nothing is spoon-fed to you. The... See full review

Ah! My Goddess TV

Dec 3, 2012

Story The premise of Ah! My Goddess is quite original; Keiichi, a bit of a loser with terrible bad luck, is using the phone one night when he accidentally gets through to the 'Goddess Hotline' which sends him a goddess who says she'll grant one wish. Rather than money or power, Keiichi's wish is that a goddess like her would stay with him forever; this leads to a romantic comedy which is, in my opinion at least, very well-executed. Belldandy (the goddess) and Keiichi end up living together in a temple which is given to them to look after whilst its owner goes off on his travels to attempt to attain more... See full review

Ouran High School Host Club

Nov 30, 2012

Story It's literally taken me months to watch even just this much of the series. It just doesn't grip me. I suppose that could be because it's absolutely full of yaoi-style fan service and I'm not really a fan of yaoi to begin with... but there is more to the anime than that. It would be unfair of me to say otherwise. The story is okay I guess... nothing new at all really. An androgynous girl breaks a vase and ends up cross-dressing and becoming part of a host club in order to pay for it. This host club is essentially an escort service for girls, with "a type to suit everyone" - in this... See full review

The Law of Ueki

Nov 30, 2012

When I first started watching Law of Ueki I wasn't really convinced; the animation style seemed bad and I found the characters very typical shounen. Story But it has quickly become one of my absolute favourite animes. The story is pretty standard in a lot of ways; tournaments between 'power users', guy who's dead-set on protecting his friends, you know the one. However there are some plot twists and it actually turns out to be a really good story in the end - I found it impossible to just watch one episode once I got past ep5 or so. Very few episodes (if any) are filler, and the story tends to be... See full review
