Manga with Transgender Themes

A comprehensive list of manga that feature trans characters and transgender themes. I'm still evaluating some other manga, but if there are any I've left out, or if you find an error, PLEASE let me know in the comments. MANGA ARE LISTED IN THIS ORDER: (all) main character(s) is/are trans and a key theme is trans topics; one of multiple main characters is trans and a key theme is trans topics; romance between a trans main character and another main character; comic essays; manga that include trans characters and themes, but they are not the main focus; collections and one-shots. Beyond that, they are listed (somewhat subjectively) by relevancy. NOTE ON NOTES: It can sometimes be difficult to classify a romantic or sexual relationship involving a transgender partner as simply "gay" or "straight" (for example, said partner is closeted and/or pre-transition). But for purposes of this list, if a trans woman is in a romantic/sexual relationship with a woman, I mark the manga as containing lesbian romance, if a trans man is in a romantic/sexual relationship with a woman, I mark the manga as containing heterosexual romance, etc., regardless of any ambiguity that may be present in the work.
1 Wandering Son

Wandering Son

'The' Trans Manga. I have some issues with it*, but it definitely belongs on this list.

Wandering Son follows a trans girl and a trans boy through their childhood years, starting in fifth grade and ending after they graduate high school. The trans girl's story gets more focus, especially as the story progresses.

NOTE: Romance of various sexualities, not listed as shounen or shoujo-ai

ANIME: Yes, completed

STATUS: Completed

TRANSLATION STATUS: Licensed, suspended; unofficial translation completed

MY STATUS: Dropped

*POSSIBLE SPOILER: Namely, the framing of a child character's casual molestation by two adult characters. I was a child myself when I read it, though, so it's possible there was some subtlety I was missing. I plan to reread the series one of these days, and my opinion is likely to change.

2 G.I.D.

G.I.D.

There is very little information about this obscure manga in English, but it follows a trans man from his childhood to adulthood post-transition. While 'Gender Identity Disorder' is very outdated in the West, it is the current terminology for Gender Dysphoria in Japan.

4 Claudine

Claudine

The titular character of this manga is a charming, handsome, AFAB, French aristocrat with blue eyes and curly, long, blond hair who lives as a man. Sound familiar? The mangaka is Riyoko Ikeda, the creator of this iconic character.

Claudine, however, is not a bifauxnen, but a trans man. This manga relates his tragic life story. Published in the 70s, it is, expectedly, outdated.

Kanojo ni Naru Hi

My choice to include this manga may be controversial because the character that warrants its inclusion is intersex. I believe it belongs here because said character was AMAB with primarily male sex characteristics and transitions to female after discovering that she has XX chromosomes.

This is a shoujo romance between an intersex trans girl and her gynophobic best friend. The story begins when the girl returns to school following an absence, now presenting as female.

22 Deborah Is My Rival

Deborah Is My Rival

This manga is either about a woman who falls in love with her next-door neighbor, the titular trans woman, or a woman who falls in love with a former high school football star and finds out her rival is her next-door neighbor, the titular trans woman. Perhaps it's both. If anyone could shed some light on this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Deborah is referred to as an 'okama,' so it's unlikely this manga is respectful.

This one caught me by surprise, and I'm not entirely sure it belongs here since there are a few caveats. But there is a trans character and a brief storyline about him. This story is told in chapters 10 and 11 (You're my Darling! and Love Me Tender) and can stand on its own since the manga is essentially a series of connected one-shots.

Boku wa, Onnanoko

A collection of one-shots by Takako Shimura, the author of Wandering Son.

To be completely honest, I misunderstood what the titular one-shot, He said 'I'm a Girl' in English, was about when I added this to the list. In it, everyone on Earth changes sex at the onset of the new millennium. However, unlike most stories with similar premises, it addresses the effects of the event on trans people.

SPOILER FOR WANDERING SON

45 Yes, It's Me

Yes, It's Me

An otherwise standard (though decent) collection of shounen-ai stories. The seventh, Dreams Unfold at Night, features a transitioned trans woman coming out to a group of her friends.

However, this event and character are not the main focus of the story, but merely a plot device to provoke a conversation between the main character, a gay man who works in a makeup department, and his coworker, a straight woman with masculine features, about their own struggles with gender.

Leaving an update for Love Me For Who I Am.

This story follows a character invited to an "otokonoko" maid cafe where they cross dress. Upon being invited, Mogumo, the main character, states they are neither female or male. This is the only manga I've found with a non-binary character. Spoilery here for the first volume,

But one of the people who works there realises she is female, not just a crossdresser.

The owner of the cafe is a trans woman as well. Finished, licensed in English, with five volumes (28 chapters).

ToruOkinawa Jun 7, 2021

This is a great list, but can you please take this line off the Boys Run The Riot description: For whatever reason, the main character is drawn with hyper-feminine eyes as if estrogen is a natural mascara.

As a Trans Masc myself, this made me feel really dysphoric about my eyes as I have pretty decently long eyelashes. There are probably many other Trans Mascs with feminine looking eyes which hate that on themselves. We can't change the fact that our eyes may look feminine. Also having the comment about estrogen just doesn't feel right to me, sorry

Opaltstrawberryking May 9, 2021

I've been reading this lost to. I'm trans and lot of these books are relatable but Bokura no Hentai made me super depressed. Was a good read though. "Boys run the Riot" and "Yuureitou" and "Four sister's starting today" are all ready good. I hope they continue writing "Boys run the Riot", "yuzu no Katu", and "Sakura-chan to Amane-chan". But I'm upset about the "Love me for who I am" book description. "Love me for who I am" is about a non-binary amab Named Magumoworking at a crossdressing cafe when a classmate mistakes them as a crossdresser like the others he works with at his cafe. The talks about the whole lgbt community, like lesbians, gay men, and trans women, and of course enby (they haven't gone over ftm yet though). It's kind of like "Our dreams at dusk: Shimanami tasogare" deals with all types of lgbt people.

Bedsito Apr 30, 2020

I know this list must have been posted a while ago but I've been revisitng it and trying to go through it reading each manga I can find since a.) I love manga and b.) I myself am trans. I just wanted to say for anyone wondering story wise wandering son and sakura-chan to Amane-Kun are probably the ones that give me the most emotion. Wandering son I actually discovered in 8th grade and has a ton of depth to it and sakura-chan to amane-kun is just very feel good although I am led to believe the manga was abandond? and my favorite on this list is probably stop!! hibari-kun I havent watch the anime but the manga is amazing although it comes off transphobic in a quick glance its actually quite a poke at how transphobes and homophobes acted in japan in the 80s (when the manga was published) and it is actually cute honestly. the humor comes from everyone over reactions to finding out hibari is amab but I didn't feel was disrespectful at all. Anyway just though i'd give my input. thank you for the list!!
