Responding to your comment on my Major 2nd review, you probably don't have to watch the entire "Major" anime (there's a lot there, anyway), but you won't know who some of the returning adult characters are and it could get a tad confusing since there are a lot of returning characters (as adults) and the reference some incidents during the first anime.
I don't think the first anime has really bad animation quality; it's been a while since I watched it, but the style isn't too far off from Major 2nd. Since it's a bit older, it might just not be in HD. However, I remember really liking the animation quality for the time (then again, older anime quality doesn't bother me since some of my favorite series are 90's anime. At least the first season of Major was around 2006 or so).
As for Diamond no Ace...I honestly can't tell you. I tried twice to get into that series (first with the manga a while back, then again when the anime came out) and I just couldn't stand it. The animation was alright, but I hated all of the characters...and after watching the likes of Cross Game, Major, and Ookiku Furikabutte, the plot didn't interest me at all.
From what I did see of it, DnA is very similar to Major (the first series, at least) in that there's a protagonist who is really good at throwing/pitching and develops a strange habit with the pitch which makes it even more interesting. So if you can stand the animation quality, it's really worth watching the first couple seasons of Major (especially if you do plan on watching Major 2nd). I honestly would recommend the first series over 2nd because though 2nd had potential, it didn't really live up to it.
