İ understand what you mean, but I think Penelope was the best and most realistic character until the end of the novel. I partially agree with you on Eckles, but Penelope was right. While I really felt sorry for him, Eckles wasn't the most innocent character, including before Yvonne checked him out. He had no intention of remaining loyal to Penelope since she had taken it, and Penelope knew it. It was his complicated and twisted feelings for Penelope that kept him from killing Penelope. Yvonne (Leila) wasn't the only reason for her betrayal, she was just a wick. . And the Eckharts mistreated Yvonne before she showed up, and I don't think any of them deserve forgiveness. When Yvonne (Leila) arrived, all she did was distort Eckharts' already negative view of Penelope, and that was enough to kill Penelope. There's nothing in his inner monologues that he hates the Duke. Not forgiving someone does not mean hating them. Personally, I hated the Duke when I read about Penelope's experience because of the duke. He is not a good father even to his own children, let alone his adopted daughter. If you don't care, don't have kids or take responsibility. He neglected Penelope, thus laying the groundwork for Reynald to slander Penelope and be bullied to death by Penelope's servants. A few months of good treatment in no way compensates for years of abuse. Penelope's survival would have been unthinkable right now if Winter hadn't turned back time. My blood pressure was almost running high (I'm 16 years old) because of Derrick and Reynold's ego when I read it. Penelope was never treated like a human being, so why would she view her persecutors as more than just a game character?
100% i love her webcomic version so much more because her thought process isn't as messed up. i can hardly read the novel because Ecliss gets thrown around like a dummy before getting dumped entirely. it makes me sick. don't agree with Derek though lolol he was straight up an arse. but yeah, fucking hate Penelope atm :(
