Best anime about adults and/or for adults

Alright let me get this straight: I do enjoy a wacky anime adventures of teenage people. Mostly set in a school. With romcom elements. Possibly with some kind of supernatural element to them. Unfortunately due to my age sometimes I have this... need to watch a show about people roughly my age, dealing with problems I don't need class photos to remember. This is an ongoing list of anime for those of You that share this need.
1 ReLIFE

ReLIFE

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult and teenage characters and the story revolves around getting back on your feet as an adult.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a comedy with some drama sprinkled for good measure. It's very very nostalgic - but in a positive way.

Why do I recommend it: this is a must-see for any older fan of anime. The main focus of a story is a guy in this late twenties being forced to live a highschooler life and failing in many hilarious ways. It also perfectly depicts the differences between teenagers and young adults without being judgemental.

2 ReLIFE: Kanketsu-hen

3 Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and topics concerning the everyday life of working people.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a rom-com with lots of slice of life elements. What's refreshing is that the main characters get together in the first episode so the story revolves around *how* their relationship develops not around will it ever begin.

Why do I recommend it: this one of my favorite anime. It perfectly depicts the relationships of adult people and is one of the reasons I felt like making this list altogether. Its cute, funny and heartwarming and I can easily recommend it to anyone above the age of 25 and be sure they're going to like it.

4 Hataraki Man

Hataraki Man

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and topics concerning the everyday life of working people.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a typical work life slice of life anime with some comedy and romance elements.

Why do I recommend it: this one of more realistic anime I've seen for quite some time. The main character is interesting and so is her supporting cast. Overall It's a great anime for any older slice of life fan.

5 Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and themes.

The overall theme of the anime: an action story with comedy elements to it. The story revolves around characters work as bounty hunters.

Why do I recommend it: this is one of the cult favorites of anime fans and not without a reason. One of the reasons for it is one of the best soundtracks one can find in anime. The characters are interesting, the world is compelling and the whole series are pretty addictive.

6 Spice and Wolf

Spice and Wolf

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and adult themes.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a rom-com with slice of life elements and lots of medieval economics trivia.

Why do I recommend it: it's very different from other slice of life and/or romance anime. The characters are well developed and the female lead has a strong personality without being over-the-top tsundere/yandere/whatever. Also I found the economical trivia interesting.

7 Spice and Wolf II

8 Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and themes.

The overall theme of the anime: a slice of life story with drama and comedy elements to it. The story revolves around characters passion for rakugo (Japanese one person plays)

Why do I recommend it: this has to be one of the best anime ever made. The animation is gorgeous the story is compelling and the characters are very memorable.

9 Descending Stories: Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

10 Hinamatsuri

Hinamatsuri

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and very young ones. Adult themes of the series include creating a family and growing up thanks to parenting and/or thanks to being taken care by parents/parent-like figures.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a great comedy dealing with serious issues without getting pretentious.

Why do I recommend it: this one of funniest shows out there and the fact that it's also pretty smart with the material it deals with makes it a must-see for basically any anime fan.

11 REC

REC

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts adult and themes focusing on their everyday life.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a comedy with some slice of life elements to it.

Why do I recommend it: Its pretty sweet and short and can be surprisingly addictive. When I finished it I found myself wanting for more.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

13 Planetes

Planetes

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and themes.

The overall theme of the anime: a slice of life story some drama, comedy, and romance elements to it. The story revolves around work-life of a group of astronauts who retrieve space debris.

Why do I recommend it: this is a really interesting show with well-developed characters and story. The world it builds is very realistic and seems plausible even if the anime is a little old and it shows (it's little things like characters using cameras instead of phones to take pictures). The animation is great and so is the music. All in all, it's a great show - check it out.

14 Arakawa Under the Bridge

Arakawa Under the Bridge

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts young adults (in their early twenties) and well ... weird themes. I think it's more fun to watch as a person who works every day, since the point of all the cast living like they do (and the point of the show) is to take a break from this kind of life.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is very weird and doesn't have a main plot point except for the romance subplot. It's basically a very weird comedy/slice of life show.

Why do I recommend it: this one of my favorite shows ever. While it's not perfect when I saw it, it hit all the right spots concerning my everyday life and how mundane it could be when considering the alternatives. Also: it's just plain fun to watch and the characters while (VERY) weird are quite interesting.

16 Space Brothers

Space Brothers

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts adult characters and the story revolves around the lives of adults.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a perfect blend of comedy and drama. The main plot point is characters passion for space travel viewed from the perspective of an aspiring astronaut and an actual astronaut send to space.

Why do I recommend it: this is a loooong series so it's not for everyone. I did like it for the comedy parts and the educational value of the series. Space travel is depicted very realistically. The characters are interesting and well developed - even ones that get dropped from the series. If You have the patience for it You will not regret starting this anime, even if You'll have to take one or two brakes from it due to its long, long run.

17 Space Brothers: Number Zero

18 Planetarium: Space Brothers - One Point of Light

Planetarium: Space Brothers - One Point of Light

19 Bakuman.

Bakuman.

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts high schoolers that very quickly (in the first season I think) become adults. I find it more suited for adults because it depicts work life of average manga artists and lots of supporting characters are adults.

The overall theme of the anime: the anime focuses on the process of creation of manga series and all the work it needs to be put in it to be a success. It's very realistic in this aspect. Anime also depicts all things one has to sacrifice to achieve a work goal.

Why do I recommend it: this one of the more educating and interesting anime I've seen. While the main characters start out as highschoolers they quickly become adults and the overall story seems very mature to me. Whats more: the story is about characters passion for an artistic endeavour which always seem to work for me.

22 Banana Fish

Banana Fish

Adult themes and characters: Anime depict adult characters and topics concerning criminal activities, some philosophical problems, and yaoi elements sprinkled in.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a genre I like to call a crime story. It has some detective/mystery elements to it, some drama and a is a pretty decent illustration of how criminals live and interact with each other and people outside their circles.

Why do I recommend it: the series is very well directed and the story is captivating and interesting. If you won't be turned off by the yaoi elements (I generally don't like them and I didn't mind them in this series) you'll probably like it.

23 Barakamon

Barakamon

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and younger characters including kids. Younger characters serve as a tool to propel the story of the transformation of the main hero.

The overall theme of the anime: a slice of life story with lots of comedy elements to it. If there's a feel-good anime its this.

Why do I recommend it: when I watched this series I was feeling pretty depressed due to personal reasons. It helped a lot and thus I can highly recommend it to anyone - even if you're not feeling down right now.

24 Kino's Journey

Kino's Journey

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters (the age of the protagonist is ambiguous) and philosophical concepts that are quite mature

The overall theme of the anime: the show is a kind of unique. Every episode (or every two episodes if the arc is two-parter) depicts a different philosophical problem and way of life that the protagonist has to acknowledge and deal with. The story arcs are very loosely connected.

Why do I recommend it: this one of more interesting anime out there - it features deep and interesting problems but avoids being pretentious about it.

25 Black Lagoon

Black Lagoon

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and themes.

The overall theme of the anime: this is an action anime with lots of comedy elements and a little drama sprinkled in. Think: Quentin Tarantino makes an anime.

Why do I recommend it: this is one of my favorite anime ever. Its over-the-top as hell but as I mentioned if Tarantino would make an anime this would be it and I haven't found any series that can duplicate this feeling.

26 Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail

Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail

27 Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage

28 Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts adult characters and the story revolves around the philosophical problems of artificial life and identity

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a drama with some action elements. Its very heavy and some people might be put off by that.

Why do I recommend it: the scope of philosophical topics the series try to deal with is amazing. It might not work for You. To tell the truth, it did not work for me 100% even though I did like it to extend. But its a series a mature viewer should at least try watching.

29 Inuyashiki: Last Hero

Inuyashiki: Last Hero

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts adult characters and younger ones. Themes of the series are mature.

The overall theme of the anime: the series concerns itself with a problem of normal humans reaction to having (practically) godlike power and answering what is good and evil and why people act good and evil. Fortunately, it's not (very) preachy about morality.

Why do I recommend it: this is a hard show to judge. It has it's good and bad moments. What I liked about it is that while it does make a clear distinction between good and evil, it also allows some motivation for characters who behave in a 'bad' way. What's more: while the middle segment is getting a little meandering it has a solid ending.

30 Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and adult themes.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a remake of beloved show that everyone keeps recommending once they watch it. Since the old series has a VERY dated animation this is a good place to start and get invested in the story.

Why do I recommend it: as I said this is a part of a very well received series - and not without a reason. The story is compelling and the SF elements are written a realistic way (similar to the old Star Trek) instead of a more fantastical vision (like Star Wars or you know - the new Star Trek). It's very good - check it out.

31 The Perfect Insider

The Perfect Insider

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts adult characters in a detective story with philosophical elements to it.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a detective story interwoven with some philosophical problems and a sprinkle of romance to make it more relatable to the viewer

Why do I recommend it: this a pretty smart show that's a good pick for anyone who likes detective stories.

32 Psycho-Pass

Psycho-Pass

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and adult themes

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a detective story with philosophical themes concerning the future of society and police work in a world with a technology that makes them work in a seemingly perfect fashion.

Why do I recommend it: this is a very good series that unfortunately gets worse and worse with each next season and movie. I can recommend it for great season one and a very interesting concept overall.

33 Psycho-Pass 2

34 Psycho-Pass: The Movie

35 Recovery of an MMO Junkie

Recovery of an MMO Junkie

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts both adult characters and topics concerning the everyday life of working people. It's very similar to Wotakoi (above) so its description is almost identical.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a rom-com with lots of slice of life elements. The story focuses on the everyday life of an otaku girl who meets a guy in an MMORPG.

Why do I recommend it: The show depicts two adults who are interested in each other while one of them has crippling social issues. It's cute, funny and heartwarming. Watch it after Wotakoi though.

36 Ojisan and Marshmallow

Ojisan and Marshmallow

Adult themes and characters: Anime depicts adult characters and the story revolves around the everyday work life of said characters.

The overall theme of the anime: the series is a very short comedy, pure and simple.

Why do I recommend it: It's short and sweet and will take about an hour to watch the whole thing. Try it. You'll probably like it.
