TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You

Dec 19, 2020

Tonikaku kawaii is very sweet romantic slice-of-life comedy. I really enjoyed this series. Main characters Nasa and Tsukasa work really well together and what I liked most about them is how they are different from typical shounen male and female characters. Nasa is quite capable guy and can be bold, but is not this ultra-cool guy either. Tsukasa is not oblivious to her feelings. On the other hand, both are oddballs in their way. Complementing each other. A very nice and sweet couple. Support character cast is small, but it’s better that way. Support cast has more typically anime tropes characters... See full review

I'm Standing on a Million Lives

Dec 19, 2020

Yet, another isekai LN adaptation. Problem with this series is the fact it introduces interesting concepts, but in the end it does nothing really with it. It’s another RPG-like game isekai, but it’s more like playing Dark Souls. Partially due to absurd system of classes and how bunch of mostly useless characters are pulled into the game with very little explanation. It makes the thing mystery box. The gamemasters are such box in particular. Who are they for real, what is the point of all this? Plot dictates that MC gets rare and useless classes [1]. Until the very last episode this doesn’t... Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina

Dec 18, 2020

Majo no tabi is series with a great first episode followed by series of episodic stories leaving overall feeling of average story at best. Do you remember that other series based mostly on traveling and visiting odd civilizations, encountering various characters? Yes, I’m speaking of Galaxy Express 999. Which is probably the best version of such series I’ve actually seen or rather read even if it is kind hard to get into it. It’s far from perfect either to be honest. The best part of Galaxy Express 999 is probably how it manages to have overarching story arc unlike other series, which... See full review

The Demon Girl Next Door

Oct 25, 2020

Daemon from the street corner is spin on magical girl genre turned into slice-of-life comedy. This anime was nice surprise, but in all honesty, it took me while to finish few last episodes. One year exactly. As a slice-of-life comedy combo it gets somewhat stale towards the end. Once you get the gist of the jokes and general feel. It isn’t as much funny as in the beginning. Nonetheless it combines light-hearted atmosphere with comedy based on the settings of not-so epic battle of a young girl, after awakening dormant daemon blood in her ancestry, against ferocious clan of light represented by a... Made in Abyss Movie: Dawn of the Deep Soul

Oct 4, 2020

The deeper the story goes into the abyss more I think whoever is writing this has to be insane or psychologically disturbed and should seek help. I've already read the manga up and beyond the point of events in the movie. It's sequel to the Made in Abyss series adapting floor 5 arc. If you have seen Made in Abyss series and like it in the past, you are going to enjoy the movie. If you didn’t like it before, you are going to hate it even more after watching the movie. The movie is a sequel and presumes you watched the anime series. So, if you didn’t, I wouldn’t recommend to watch this... See full review

Re:ZERO: Starting Life in Another World Season 2

Oct 1, 2020

Here we go again. This series brings up mixed feelings. Re:Zero has a story deep buried under this thick layer of respawn mechanism akin to game The Stanley Parable [1] and fan service. Speaking of fan service, in this case not much of ecchi kind, but the bloody kind. I don’t mind violence in series, where it makes sense to show it. In Re: Zero most of the time violence is pointless and goes long way to show every form of torture and is not limited to one character. It’s ever-present and constant beating viewer again and again until he rests his torn blood-stained body on lap of his waifu [2]... See full review

Rent-a-Girlfriend

Sep 26, 2020

How spineless guy got lucky … or not. This series has issues on so many levels. The first question is what genre the series is supposed to be. It’s mildly romantic, funny not really, dramatic questionably. It’s more like a weird harem series with royal flush in terms of unlikable characters. This review is going to talk about events in the series. I’m going to go full spoilers ahead. Dude grow a spine
I’ve seen my fair share of spineless protagonists (mostly in harem), but Kazuya is whole different level. Not only he doesn’t defend himself against abuse, but has... See full review

Deca-Dence

Sep 23, 2020

Deca-dence is anime, which did surprise me lot. There was one-line review carrying just one message: “You shouldn’t read anything about it, just watch it”. It’s true, because if you continue to read behind this point you will get spoiled. You have been warned! Spoiler section Last time any series throwed such curveball into the second episode was in the Youjo Senki Saga of Tanya the evil. The first episode does establish characters and world in a manner I expected. In a postapocalyptic settings surviving humanity lives in huge movable fortress Deca-dence, because the surface of... Black Clover

Sep 5, 2020

Black Clover is series most western anime fans dropped faster than hot potato, because of the main protagonist’s constant ear-shattering screaming in the original Japanese dubbing. After watching so far going well over hundred episodes the Black Clover series is for me basically based on the bottom of barrel fighting shounen cliches. For lots of episodes, I would say fifty or so, it’s nothing than constant barrage of overused shounen tropes in the story and most importantly in the characters. After that the story progresses to some more interesting conflicts, but the cliches remain nonetheless... See full review

Princess Tutu

Sep 2, 2020

Recently I've rewatched Princess Tutu. Wow, this series is so awesome. I think it impressed me even more than many years back, when I’ve watched it for the first time. It aged really well and after watching 500+ series this is like top 5 material easily. It combines great story and characters, timeless classical music masterpieces (Swan lake, Blue Danube and many more) and dance (ballet) as integral part of the story-telling. Heck each episode is using one such classical master piece as theme, explicitly mentioned even in the subtitle of the episode. The story itself is built as homage to fairy tales... See full review

Tower of God

Aug 13, 2020

After watching the Tower of God, I still don't understand what it's about and what the heck is the Tower supposed to be. While most of the characters have potential and are somewhat interesting. Something which cannot be said about the blank protagonist, who is the chosen one. Why and what for that hasn't been properly established yet. I can only speculate. Among his hidden super powers is luck. Good luck to make any meaningful non-comical story with that.
The point is no matter how your characters seem intriguing if you don’t establish story and world for them, they are going to just hang in the... See full review

The Rising of the Shield Hero

Jul 6, 2019

Aside watching the anime I’ve already read all released volumes of the manga, which covers the first and part of the second arc. Rise of the Shield Hero is one of the countless isekai light novel adaptation, but is it any good? I would say it is not as good as one would think after the first episode. It tricks viewer with few gimmicks to make illusion it’s somewhat better than average at best. Firstly it presents a silly notion, that a shield can’t be used as a weapon. Even a gamer, who never held the real thing, knows it is simply not true. Especially with magic, there are many ways a... See full review

Nadia: Secret Of Blue Water

Jun 8, 2019

Jules Verne's "20 000 leagues under the sea" was the very first book I've ever read on my own as a kid. It started my interested in sci-fi literature. This anime is proudly proclaiming inspiration by the book.
Basically it is Nautilus meets Space Battle Ship Yamato in Ghibli movie like story line. It's inspired by the story of Nautilus and captain Nemo indeed, but it manages to be its own thing. Especially towards the ending it seems to draw even from the Space Battle Ship Yamato. The characters and storytelling is very reminiscent of Ghibli movies. The story follows adventures of young... My Roommate is a Cat

Apr 16, 2019

This series was the surprise of the season. Even if I’m not particularly fond of animals I like cute cats. I have no doubt anyone, who likes cute animals is going to enjoy this story. It overflows with heart-warming cute and funny moments. One big thumb up for that. Each episode is told from a perspective of the main protagonist and then from the perspective of the cat and other animals. Usually an unexpected and funny perspective. The story is a small, but significant journey for the main protagonist.
Subaru Mikazuki, the main protagonist, is socially awkward introvert. He spent most of his... See full review

The Promised Neverland

Apr 4, 2019

No doubt this anime has been one of the more popular shows of the season, but after the final episode I feel there is a lot to be desired. The review contains spoiler free sections and spoiler containing sections, make your choice. However before choosing to go full spoilers ahead beware, that the story relies on mind-games, which means I recommend to watch the first episode and then decide. Overall let me just say this, it was a good one time watch. I would consider to read manga after watching anime, because it’s better in my opinion. After reading all current volumes (13) of the manga I... See full review

Dragon Ball Super Movie: Broly

Jan 28, 2019

I wasn't looking forward to this movie at all. After all that travesty Dragon Ball Super left a lot of bitter taste. Not to speak of Dragon Ball movies in general, which were subpar addition to the series, except the Future Trunk movie. However I have to say compared to the old Broly movie, this one is way better in every regard. I would argue it's even better than the Dragon Ball Super itself. You should watch it if you like either of those previously mentioned you're, I dare to say, guaranteed to have a good time. Following review contains some spoilers after this point. My Sister, My Writer

Jan 1, 2019

Why did I even watch this? One thing I can say for sure this anime taught me a lot about one word „ichaicha“. It means “make out” i.e. kissing, touching, etc. It’s been while since I watched some crappy harem anime series. As it is usual for any harem that does not fall into hentai category, there is no real action happening. What you get instead is bunch of girls, mostly crazy i.e. resulting in a lot of comical moments, to compete over generic onii-chan. The premise of story is quite simple. I’m just talking about it so you would get the picture, what the story is like... See full review

Zombie Land Saga

Jan 1, 2019

„Even in death I want to fulfil my dream…“, says the main character in the beginning of anime opening. Zombie land saga is anime I’ve quite enjoyed especially the first few episodes. In particular the first episode is a blast. No doubt the best first episode of the season. Unfortunately it doesn’t keep the initial appeal and slides more to the side of idol anime tropes such as overcoming problems to perform, managing to dance properly, etc. even if it preserves comical over the top narration. However for an idol series it doesn’t try to take itself too seriously. While... See full review

UzaMaid!

Dec 22, 2018

„Our housemaid is so annoying!“ is a comedy about yuri lolicon woman and the target of her affections, a little Russian blond girl, who lives alone with her stepfather, after her mother died. However, is it funny? Yes, it has its funny moments underlined by necessity of constant vigilance on the girl part against advances of the maid to cuddle or even to propose marriage. Let’s just call the police. The series is somewhat self-aware and makes that “I’m calling the police” jokes from time to time. There is also the fact, that the maid is quite muscular... The Girl in Twilight

Dec 19, 2018

This is going to be hard to review. Akanesasu Shoujo is interesting original series. Interesting in what it does. Basically it takes Mahou Shoujo genre, then adapts it in a way that seems different, yet on second thought it’s underlined by the same archetypes and tropes. What are the archetypes? It’s a group of girls, who are friends, with one girl that is at the center. Girls fight enemies threatening to destroy the world with special powers they obtained. In this process each has to develop their character to become strong better version of self. Each has to overcome weakness and in the... See full review

Goblin Slayer

Nov 15, 2018

When I started watching the Goblin slayer I had no idea what is it to going to be about. So what is wrong with the series? The first obvious problem with the series is discrepancy between the style of the world, side characters and dark fantasy that the anime should supposedly be. This is precisely the reason why many people were surprised by the first episode. The overall style is not that different from Sword Art Online or other more self-indulged non-dark fantasy, with exception of the main protagonist, who with his Dark Souls design stands out like sore thumb. There is nothing wrong with making the... See full review

Hell Girl: Two Mirrors

Dec 10, 2017

Jigoku Shoujo 2 follows in spirit of the first season. The second season has the same dark and grim atmosphere. Fans of the first season won’t be disappointed. The second season starts with follow up to the origin story from the first season. It is a part for the main arc of the second season. After this short introduction the season continues in the beginning as mere episodic series with standalone short stories. I liked how it expands the various circumstances which can foster hatred towards stranger, neighbor, friend or even family member. The stories are not mere rehash of the previous season... In Another World With My Smartphone

Oct 4, 2017

In another world with smartphone is amalgamation of various anime/Light Novel tropes. That’s all folks! It is like watching long list of anime cliché. Seriously, you don’t expect me to write walls of words to describe “plain Jane” light novel adaptation to meet standard for public review. The only good point is that the anime does not present itself as some deep masterwork. It is super simple and if you want that simplicity in story, characters it is right there with pretty much all usual fetishes.

Hell Girl

Jul 29, 2017

Jigoku Shoujo is dark and grim story. The chilling realism of evil man is capable is the greatest appeal of the series as whole. How easy is for man to trade off his soul for temporal things. Even if the consequences of his actions are clearly presented to him. The series captures the endless circle of evil throughout the history. Before the main story arc, which starts in the eight episode, the initial episodes ease viewer into the world of Jigoku Shoujo.
There is a lot to love about the world of Jigoku Shoujo. Supernatural elements of the world are based on Japanese folklore. As I understand it the... See full review

Little Witch Academia captures magic of anime. It's a fairytale-like story with old school archetypes. Main character is underdog pursuing unapologetically her dream. It is about believing good heart, never give up and hard work. She is energetic and dreamer. Other characters follow the formula as well. KADO: The Right Answer

I have watched KADO: The Right Answer. The answer is "It is much easier to tear apart anime you didn't like." The fact is this anime is a lot different. It is the very thing that caught my attention. I was really intrigued by the premise of first contact story. No mecha, no harem, no ninjas, no Titans :P, etc. Indeed if you like run of the mill anime this might not be your cup of tea. Saga of Tanya the Evil

Apr 5, 2017

The first episode is pretty straightforward. It was just as I assumed. This is going to be mere military loli pandering with some edge in this 1st World War setting. If anything this anime proves that you should not judge the book by its cover or the first episode. It is the second episode which is the game changer. At least it was for me. The description does not do justice to the story. I am going to now talk about things that one might consider a spoilers. Drifters

Drifter is another series from Kouta Hirano the author of Hellsing manga, which adaptation is still one of my favorite anime series (i.e. Hellsing Ultimate). I have read few chapters of the Drifters manga, when it was released, but I wasn't really impressed with it. I wasn't expecting much from this anime to begin with. The story is about the Drifters. The Drifters are warriors, including historical figures, taken from our world across the time and put in the different world as far as I understand to fight some proxy war between two deities. Strange as it seems the story is appealing. It is one overarching... See full review

Re:ZERO: Starting Life in Another World

Jul 27, 2016

Going on downward spiral this anime is worse and worse with each episode. The main character in one moment being overconfident, cheerful and in the next moment suffering from a psychological breakdown, crying like a little girl - rinse and repeat. Especially in the 15 episode, which I would describe as dismal. Who comes with the script for this? It is a complete mess. The whole thing is even more absurd with the time traveling aspect. If any kind of bad end scenario is simply erased by returning back in time. Why he takes it so seriously? The constant time resets if anything should make him more... See full review

The Lost Village

Let me start from my first impressions. Initially I was like "Show takes place on the bus? Don't tell me the whole story is going to take place only inside the bus?" Luckily not, but first things first. In the beginning I'm punched in my stomach with one huge info dump. I am talking about the introductions. In short time two or three dozen of characters introduce themselves and basically tell what they are about. Since I presume most of them are just wearing the red uniform it is good thing to have large cast, otherwise there won't be so much characters in a few episodes. How the hell... See full review
