The Apothecary Diaries

Jul 31, 2021

really NOT recommended for people that cherish their sensitivity - there are tropes like pedophilia, sexual harrasment covered as comedy scenes, nimphomania, propagation of pornography, and many scenes that's supposed to be funny, but turns characters into disgusting individuals

I do NOT recommend.

1/10 story
5/10 art
1/10 characters
1/10 overall

I don't know about some of the things you listed, but in general, like the first reply said, it's based on a real historical time period. It's not an easy read, because unfortunately, this is how things were. You are weighing this book as if it's in our world in our current timeline. I do get it, I've had my fair share of books that have made me quite uncomfortable, including this one at times, but it's important to weigh EVERYTHING about a story. What was the theme? How well written was it? Are the characters well rounded? What emotions did this invoke in me? How powerful was this to me? What did I take from this? One thing I learned is that sometimes, if a book is able to elicit such an amount of discomfort, that can mean it's in fact very well written. That's the beautiful thing about well written books, although to be fair, sometimes there are stories that are just trash. I implore you to look a bit under the surface on this one though. The structure, the historical accuracy, the well written mysteries, the research put into it, the well rounded characters, the small details, and a protagonist that despite the time does rise above gender stereotypes, and a plotline that is so accurate sometimes it's a bit disturbing. It's not a bad book, and I hope down the line, you give this book another chance. If not, that's ok.

Made an account just to say that this is a historical-esqe piece of media, and that shit is to be expected. You do not see people getting angry at other historical-esqe works like ones focused on kings and queens, and complaining about misogyny. Why? Because we know what we are getting into, and we know what it means for stories that pull from actual history either semi-realistically to realistically. Are we not allowed to make historical pieces of fiction nowadays? Is it morally wrong now to create a piece of fiction that pulls from real life, that covers topics in a realistic way for the time period the story is set in? But for how exaggerated you make it out to be, I do not think we read the same manga, or that you read more than a few chapters. And I think we all can agree that "propagation of pornography" is a little too prude-ish and strange. Do you just think every and any piece of pornography is evil or something?

How exactly does it do any of this? I haven't really seen any of this so far.
