Both maind characters have tragic backstories who are thust into a world of magic they must learn about as they deal with their own inner demons. The telling of their tales has this slow, wholesome build with great character development and world building. You don't mind thet the writiers take their time in this fashion as each episode is a delight and makes you feel for the main characters as well as the supporting cast.

Normal guy thrown into a life with super-powered girls, but Keichi still remains a normal guy. Even though he's surrouneded by girls, he does not have a harem like Tenchi does. The same creator penned both these great works and I can't recommend them enough.
