Ghost Hunt

May 2, 2018

This is, simply put, an Anime version of any paranormal investigation/research show you have seen on TV such as Ghost Adventures or any of the many others that were common back around 2007. There are a total of 8 cases that vary in episode counts across the 25 eps. I found them to get more interesting with each one, with the last 2 cases being very entertaining. The first few eps weren't all that alluring though, so I recommend getting into case 2 before deciding whether or not to go on, else skip to around ep 16 and start with case 7 for the more "horror/scary" themed stuff.

As this is case based, it is in short story format. There is no link between the cases except that the same research group is investigating them. Given that, there isn't much in terms of emphasis on characters. Even though the guy is the boss of the group, Mai comes off as feeling like the main character. You won't get to know much about them as it's all about the cases, so don't expect any depth or real background info on them. Something that did feel odd, a bit forced, and unnecessary is the love interest/rivalry. It's pretty casual, but let's face it, it's all about helping the clients and enjoying the story of each case. You wouldn't see this in any other paranormal show, and it felt unnecessary here as it doesn't really contribute anything other than an attempt to do something with the characters. The choice to add an Australian to the group seemed out of place too.

For the paranormal aspect of it all, it is done pretty reasonably. Many of these cases are something you would find in the paranormal world. There are some small lore bits which are accurate too. It gets a bit unrealistic in the last 2 cases, but there are still believable components. If anything, those were more imaginative and creative, which made it more interesting from the usual. There are moments that are rather creepy, with good creepy sound, but I wouldn't classify it as a horror beyond some scenes in the last 2 cases.

The animation definitely looks dated, but this was a 2007 Anime and if anything, that dated look contributes to the feel for something paranormal themed.

Overall, the first 3 episodes had me a bit lost as to exactly what to expect, combined with second guessing my choice of watching. I am glad I stuck with it though because by episode 5-6, I just couldn't stop watching. I love paranormal shows and have seen them all, and know a fair amount on the topic. It might come down to just that though,  If you are a paranormal fan who enjoys ghost hunting TV shows, this is for you as it's exactly that, but in Anime form. For those who aren't as huge of fans or not at all, it might be far less interesting.
