Toradora!

Mar 18, 2018

This is one of this Anime you have to stick with to get the full understanding and enjoyment. There is a lot more to it than what you see at the surface, as there are 25 eps and not 12. Taiga is rather brutish early on, and it might turn several viewers off, however she does change quite massively and things do take a turn towards the last 1/4 of the episodes. I think it's important to stress this fact, as it makes the difference on your impression of the Anime, and you miss out on the best parts that make this more in depth than several other Tsundere Anime. If you are the type to experience emotions easy, there are a lot of sadand touching parts.

The ending is a rather frustrating one. After 25 episodes, I would have expected something a bit more on the enjoyable end. There is a very important scene that occurs after the credits of the 25th ep, so make sure you watch it as it helps alleviate some of this frustration. Still, I, and I am sure most others, would have liked to see it done on a better note, and the only part that I didn't like so much.

The Anime plays out as a daily/school life, so it's more about the characters and their story than anything else. You have all the standard events like the school festival, Christmas, etc. It has quite the romance triangle, although it is at least partly obvious how things will turn out. I don't think it is quite as traditional as far as Tsundere Anime go either. For a good amount of time, the circumstances are different, as given by the description. Without giving everything away, it's clear that for around half the episodes, everyone liked someone, but things do change over time, just like real life, and those that quitting the Anime early will miss these significant changes.

The main cast consists of 5 characters. Each has their own quirk a little different than other similar Anime. The teachers being afraid of a student is quite surprising, since it's not a realistic scenario. Minori may seem to be an energetic and care free girl, but there is a big secret to her that she doesn't reveal till near the end that changes how you will see her. Taiga, being the main character, undergoes a lot of change. You will learn about her past, why she is how she is, and see that change, although the significant change won't occur till the last 1/4. I don't think I can emphasize enough how she isn't some overly harsh Tsundere or something, sure, she could simply not be so intense, but she actually is incredibly kind once you realize what she was trying to do (without giving much away, she is willing to put others before herself, despite any feelings she may have about a situation). Don't judge a book by it's cover, or a person at what you see on the surface. She really is one of those who are very misunderstood by everyone, because she won't reveal the 3-4 sentences on what her true reasoning till later on.

Overall, I really loved it. The ending did frustrate me because it could have be done better and felt more rewarding after watching 25 eps, even with the after credits scene, it just wasn't quite enough. I realize Taiga might turn people away, but there is so much more depth to everything than what you see at the surface. You won't get to see the in depth aspect and the truth behind everything (and how Taiga really is) unless you stick it out to the last half or quarter. Those that are the emotional type, will realize quite a bit of emotion, mainly later on.
