Himouto! Umaru-chan

May 15, 2017

Loved this, it is so funny and amusing. If you are looking for more of a silly/stupid comedy that is tuned to a daily/school life theme, give this a shot. There is a strong element of otaku/gamer culture, so this is aimed a bit more at those people, basically, the more you can relate to this theme and Umaru with her lazy ways, the more you will enjoy this. The original image and first impression may be a bit misleading though. The chibi concept is very specific to Umaru, and when she is in lazy otaku mode, when that isn't the case, she is normal, and everyone else is always normal. I was hesitant of the Chibi image at first, but it is very fitting and makes things more amusing, as she is almost like a human hamster.

There is absolutely no story, so the rating is for dialogue. This is a daily/school life concept that focuses on characters and humor. Everything is pretty episode based, and the ending is as random as everything else. Episode 12 though was pretty epic in that it was the most funny episode of them all at least.

The characters are important here, Umaru lives with her older brother that takes care of her, and she takes full advantage of his kind nature, and he allows her to be lazy. You will find Umaru to be one of the most laziest otaku/gamers, except when she is out in public of course. Along with these 2 are their friends who are a mix of competitive, shy, or awkward. Basically, the characters are all amusing and by keeping the cast relatively small, none are left out and each contribute in some meaningful way to the entertainment.

The last piece worth mentioning is the opening video/music. It is as amusing as the anime and in a way, describes the anime pretty well.

Overall, an epic piece of humorous entertainment that isn't serious, more silly, and meant to be fun.
