Rosario + Vampire

Dec 20, 2015

This is a pretty decent anime. The first three quarters are heavily ecchi based or has suggestive words/actions (you need a dirty mind in the first place to catch the references). Romance plays a large aspect here from start to finish as it is what connects the group and the source of power and provides the competition. The setting is based on school life which is not as ordinary as it would seem since this school is specifically for monsters. There is a fair amount of comedy throughout too.

The first half of this season runs on a formula, you can expect some events to happen that lead up to a fight and the ending to each episode ending in the same way. These are quite random and don't really link up so it is a tad boring but becomes the foundation for bringing the main group together and giving some insight on them (character relation and background development). This routine breaks and becomes more unpredictable during the last half. The last quarter goes all out and and brings in the story of the school environment which was actually quite interesting.

Throughout the anime we have a bat that provides comments which are amusing and add some character to the show (also keep an eye out for his outfit during the beach trip). To go with that we have quite a few different monsters with very different personalities / physical appearance that make for an interesting main group. Of course they are all girls fighting over the main character which isn't a surprise for an ecchi anime. The "little snowbunny" as she wants to be called, is my favorite character and largely different from the rest. She looks cool (purpley <3), has the best random appearences and most of what she says is blunt and funny.

There are some neat little songs throughout which sound pretty nice and catchy.

The one unfortunate thing with this anime is the art work. It was created for 2008 but feels like an art style from the 90's. This actually compliments the monster theme well but degrades its purpose of ecchi. For those who are not huge fans of ecchi, this could be enough to make it enjoyable without feeling like it is constantly being pushed into your face. I just wasn't a fan of the looks of the characters had there been ecchi or not since that factor was quite irrelevant to me for watching this.

Lastly, the romance plays out in kind of a funny way. It feels sort of "stuck" with the same thing happening between our two main characters. She is a vampire so when they look like they are going to kiss, something else happens or they are interrupted. It makes for a funny romance anime with a large dose of ecchi. There is season 2 to watch after this so the first season was most likely made with that in mind.
