Thanks for the tip on Recerent Gary Davis, I can pick up one of his CDs at the library.
Haven't read anything like MatDB since and the only other work of note I've heard from the author is Kangoku Gakuen, but it's damn criminal he couldn't continue the series. And that misery, right to the last page. You're making me want to read it again, and the art, stark realistic design worked perfectly with the atmosphere. It did so much right, and it was so worth reading.
i never thought i would be into the more dramatic stuff either, but it's so attention grabbing!
and YEEESSS i LOVE legend of the galactic heroes! i will admit, it's been a while since i've watched it, but i remember being very impressed. hopefully i'll find the time to check it out again!
and it's hard to find anime like rose of versailles since theres nothing quite like it. ;_; but i would perhaps recommend oniisama e for you. like rose of versailles it's based on a manga by riyoko ikeda. it doesn't have a historical theme but if you enjoyed the gripping melodrama of rose of versailles then perhaps you would enjoy oniisama e, as well!
i also recommend revolutionary girl utena, probably moreso. it's a lot more modern than rose of versailles, but there are a lot similarities in it's themes and characters. most rose of versailles fans that i know are also fans of utena. ^^
It's awesome to find out someone else read that criminally underrated series! Shouldn't have been cancelled but what was there had me sold completely and got me into his music. Still remember when he played at the bar for the first real time, could see the music pour from the pages.
