Talentless Nana

Dec 6, 2021

This anime was basically what My Hero Acedemia might have been if Duku was the polar opposite of what his character actually is. A dark analytical villain instead of a goody two shoes hero.  It is quite the interesting concept. I felt like this series took inspiration from a lot of other anime that I have watched and generally liked, but at the same time I haven't seen anything quite like it.

The story seems like it took a lot of inspiration from Dangan Ronpa and Death Note.  Nana is tasked with a mission to infiltrate and island of people with super powers and assassinate as many of them as possible without letting her crimes be discovered. Meanwhile Kyouya is constantly suspicious of her and always on the brink of discovering her methods and exposing her crimes.  Since Nana is on an island full of people with super powers and she doesn't have any herself, if she does get discovered she will be completely helpless. So her only chance is to stay one step ahead of Kyouya.  The relationship between Nana and Kyouya was very similar to the relationship between Light and L in Deathnote.

While the animation was not super flashy like you might expect of an anime full of people with super powers, it certainly wasn't bad.  Nana almost looked like completely different characters when she transitioned between the cute but clumsy airhead that she pretended to be and the monster that she truly was. The way the anime also changed the background from normal colors to bright shades of red and blue depending on the mood of which ever character it was presenting was a nice touch.

The sound was decent but certainly could have been better.  There were some parts where the music was too loud compared to the voices of the characters and it was hard to understand what they were saying. This only happened a couple of times, but it definitely felt immersion breaking when it did. The voice actors all felt like they did a good job, but none of them felt like they were truly memorable. The OP and ED were also pretty good, but neither of them completely blew me away.

I thought the characters were also very well designed. While there were a few characters that were put into the anime just to die and were not well developed, I loved all of the major characters.  Nana was a brilliant assassin who was constantly finding creative ways to target people with super powers and also had the quick wits to pass the blame onto others when parts of her plans didn't quite work out. Kyouya was also a brilliant character, but his knowlege of some of the basics in life was a welcome comic relief. Michiru was always on Nana's side but you could never tell until the very end whether she was actually loyal to her or she had her own secret agenda.  Overall excellent characters and great relationships between them.

Final Thoughts: This anime definitely had the potential to be a 10/10 even with the slight issues I had with the audio, but the finale left a lot to be desired.  It felt like it was designed to be a 24 episode series but got cut off in the middle.  Not only did it end on a cliffhanger, it also felt like the main story was nowhere close to reaching a conclusion.  Depsite that, everything else about this series was very enjoyable while it lasted.  9/10
