When you want something serious to watch

This list will include anime with a more "serious" tone and at least a decent plot lol. If you have something that belongs on the list, write it in the comment section and if I have seen it and I agree with adding it (I only add anime I've seen on all my lists.). If I haven't seen it, I watch it. Thanks :)
1 Umineko: When They Cry

Umineko: When They Cry

Death Parade

Watch as the humaity in people are tested. Its interesting to watch. In the situations presented, would you still have a kindred soul or would your soul become dark?

14 Death Note

Death Note

Who would come up with such an elaborate plan?!

15 Danganronpa: The Animation

Danganronpa: The Animation

Man...let me tell you...this is psychologically horrifying when you really think about. Can you imagine yourself living under those 'conditions'

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

(2 seasons)

17 Blast of Tempest

Blast of Tempest

18 Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

(2 seasons)

19 Future Diary

Future Diary

I might have to re-watch this actually. From what I remember, this is...creepy?...is the best way I can put it; not as much as Higurashi When the Cry though lol. This is a survival of the fittest kind of anime where the MC is pushed into situations that he does not want to be in, but does not have much of a choice if he wants to live. PLUS, he has a psychopathic girl who loves him to death...and I mean that.

20 Deadman Wonderland

Deadman Wonderland

21 Hellsing

#1 Vampire anime hands down...unless Noblesse gets a full series. For all you Gore lovers, this is one for you.

22 Hellsing Ultimate

Hellsing Ultimate

23 Utawarerumono

A man with no memories, through a sequence of ufortunate events, first becomes a leader of a small village then a 'relatively' small nation. As a ruler each decision must be made carefully; who you choose as an ally, and who you choose as an enemy will make or break you.

24 Basilisk

A guy; A girl. Two feuding ninja families. Will their love prevail? or will they too fall victim to the generations of hatred.

25 Speed Grapher

Speed Grapher

26 Zetman

When the transforming hero doesn't mind "killing justice"

27 Blassreiter

28 School Days

School Days

Really hesitant about adding this. After watiching it until the end, who do you think is at fault?

29 Wolf's Rain

Wolf's Rain

Don't even know how I came to watch this but I surprisingly like it. A story of wolves, who can appear to look human, look for their haven.

30 Ergo Proxy

Ergo Proxy

I won't lie. I tried to watch this a few years ago, but I couldnt understand what was going on. Years later, I watched it, undertstood it, and loved it.

31 Casshern Sins

Casshern Sins

This was so hard to watch...smh. This successfully killed my spirit. Its a good story; don't get me wrong, but...its just so...*sigh*

32 Trinity Blood

Trinity Blood

If vampires feed on humans, then who feeds on vampires? This is your answer lol

33 One Outs

One Outs

A good pace changer

34 Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen

Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen

To think that kenshin had such a past. I saw the series first, but I watched it again after seeing this. You see people differrently after seeing their past.

35 Akagi

I know some people might look past an anime due to unnatural character designs but look past that for this one. Follow Akagi and his want for a true gambling experience. Not looking for a near death thrill but rather live or die situation. His way of thinking is remarkable and his luck is just godly.

36 M3 the dark metal

M3 the dark metal

37 Hell Girl

Hell Girl

Just one of those anime that is too in tune with real world issues. I have seen situations like the one in this anime, and I KNOW that some people would turn to that site.

38 Aoi Bungaku Series

Aoi Bungaku Series

39 Kurozuka

40 The Lost Village

The Lost Village

Imagine having your deepest fair materialized. There you go.

I was really pulled into this. At first, I did not want to watch it for some reason but from the first the episode it got me.

42 Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee

Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee

I actually forgot about this lol...I really like the story, and watching how lag grows as a person while on a search for the person he admires.

On another note, I would hate to be a mailman if I had to fight those bugs on my way to deliver mail. Life risking job they have there

43 Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee Reverse

Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee Reverse

The story continues and new mysteries are revealed. Although the anime and manga don't really align, I advise you all to read the manga. You won't be disappointed...probably. The ending left a lot to be wanted but the author couldn't help it.

44 Nabari no Ou

Nabari no Ou

I guess this belongs here

45 Knight Hunters: Eternity

Knight Hunters: Eternity

46 Darker than Black

Darker than Black

2 seasons. (Not a reason. I have to think on this)

47 Elfen Lied

Elfen Lied

48 Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-

I thought this was going to be a bright, happy, boy likes girl; feelings not mutual but chases her anyway type of anime...until things just turned dark.

49 Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy- Despair Arc

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy- Despair Arc

How everything began. I never played the game so the anime is all I have. The start did not have that scary/horror feel to it so I was wondering how this would lead to the Danganronpa that first came out. Later on, you begin to see familiar faces from the old cast, and things take a crazy turn smh

50 Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy- Future Arc

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy- Future Arc

As mentioned before, I didn't play the games so I was a bit lost at the start of this one. This story is a continuation of the first anime release. It's in a post apocalyptic setting. Those from the despair arc are running rampant destroying everything. Our hero from the first series is arrested for treason. The reason being under suspicion of protecting those from the despair arc.

Kiznaiver and Another would be perfect for this list.

Another is pretty self-explanatory if you've watched it or even just heard of it, it's a psychological horror anime. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it as long as you don't have anything against blood and gore.https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/another

Kiznaiver does have a fair share of comedy in it, but it's way more about the psychological aspect. Seven teenagers who normally wouldn't interact with each other, get bound together by each other's wounds. This means they can feel each other's pain. When one gets hurt, the pain is shared equally between them. Additionally, as they grow closer to each other, they start sharing more than just their pain. It's a truly amazing show, one of my all-time favorites, that focuses on the mentalities of the seven teenagers and their different hardships. Unrequited love, pretending to be something you're not, and trying to forget a horrible past are just some of the topics this anime goes over. https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/kiznaiver

This turned into a rant about Kiznaiver, I'm sorry. I just really love it :]

I think Perfect Blue is perfect for this list.

Homopotato Feb 4, 2020

I would recommend adding Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. If you haven't seen it, its an absolute must for any horror fans.

Where the actual fuCc is Death Note.

Ronsoru Apr 12, 2019

Great list. There's a few I'd add though.

  • Inuyashiki (dying old man and homicidal teenager become cyborgs; the former uses his newfound powers to fight crime)
  • Grimgar (group find themselves in an RPG-esque world; the story follows their daily struggles living in this unfamiliar world)
  • 91 Days (kid's family gets murdered by the mafia; he sets out to kill the ones who did it)
  • Seirei no Moribito
  • Shinsekai Yori
  • Attack on Titan (humanity's fight to survive against colossal man-eating creatures)
  • Evangelion
  • Megalo Box (guy loses a fight against a famous boxer; enters a boxing tournament in hopes of beating him)
  • Gankutsuou
  • Ajin (kid finds out he's an Ajin, an immortal being; has to run away to avoid being taken into custody)
  • Kaiji (from the same mangaka as Akagi)
  • The Promised Neverland (the story of three kids living in a seemingly innocent orphanage)

The rest I can't really summarize since it has been years since I've watched them. 91 Days and Shinsekai Yori are definitely the darkest ones of the bunch.
