Yes, maybe I have a SLIGHT bias to this anime as it was my first ever anime....BUT I still think it holds up even today, and after watching it again and again throughout my time watching anime and my tastes changing, the characters never seem dull or boring and the story never monotone and 'safe'. Animation does dip, and you can see when Studio Gainax was running out of budget, but when it mattered, the animation was flawless and so very Gainax.
