To me, my sympathy for Mitsuboshi dissipitated once he willingly decides to work with Satou to get rid of Asahi, and then to make him even more unsympathetic, he wanted Shio all to himself so much, that he deliberately goes against Asahi's orders to report back to him the address to the apartment. But that's sympathy. It's a subjective concept. The anime does present Mitsuboshi as a victim, but it also makes it apparent the depths that Mitsuboshi had sank to which removes him from sympathy.
