My Top Anime

My absolute favorites reside on this list and in my heart! There's a bit of everything here but I generally crave interesting characters in a depressing setting the most. I guess I enjoy breaking my own heart over lil animated characters 🥲
1 Shiki

Shiki

Shiki was my first! It means so much to me. Like Tokyo Ghoul (but better imho), it has no clearly defined 'good' and 'evil'. The viewer must stuggle to pick their own side. It starts off a little slow, but the horror kicks in eventually; trust me, it will snowball into a big bloody masterpiece. The art and soundtrack is odd, but I absolutely adored it all enough to watch it 3 times over the years.

Just learned it's based on a Stephen King novel called Salem's Lot and now I'm tempted to buy that shit... sadly haven't read a real book since I was a kid, but if I were to read anything it'd definitely be that O.O

2 Hunter x Hunter (2011)

Hunter x Hunter (2011)

I'm convinced that this is the best shounen you can get your hands on. I loved the antagonists just as much as the gang of AMAZING protagonists for being genuinely funny and not overly preachy (I love Gon and Killua like children). The arcs were so well-paced; I enjoyed them all with the highlight being the Chimera arc. It has highs and lows, jokes and instensity, good & bad sides to characters. I just can't put into words all the marvelous things this one has to offer, but I knew that HxH was going to be one of my favorites from the first episode.

3 Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate

PERFECTION. I doubt I'll ever meet a soul who dislikes S;G, and I don't want to. If you hate S;G, jail. Jail immediately. I fell in love with the characters and the plot is the best I've seen to date. It may not seem like 'favorite anime' material for the first half of the series, but shit gets real later. I don't want to spoil anything, but I promise that this is worth your time! El. Psy. Congroo.

4 91 Days

91 Days

Are you an emotional masochist? Cool, here you go. Fall into the flaming void of despair with me 🙃

5 The Devil is a Part-Timer!

The Devil is a Part-Timer!

So far, this is the most hilarious anime I've seen. This is a quality comedy and what I consider the first true example of the genre that I ever watched. The characters are lovable and oh so funny, and the voice acting for the dub was actually very well-done. I recommend it to absolutely everyone :)

6 Terror in Resonance

Terror in Resonance

The soundtrack really stands out, there's this one song that makes me cry every time like kryptonite. Wonderful animation, good plot, omg I loved Twelve so much back in the day. The actions of the MCs aren't really justified but it was enjoyable for me at least. This is perfect for when you're in the mood to get shot in the heart with all the feels, and I'm  a sucker for that.

7 Karneval

Karneval

Karneval has superb character design (minor characters too) and one of my favorite art styles of all time with super vivid colors.

It has bad ratings because the plot took the backseat, so I'm perfectly aware that it's not a 5-star anime in terms of quality. I rate for personal enjoyment, so 5 STAR WOOO so pretty and fun

8 Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul

Majority of Haters: 'It's too edgy and overrated...'

Edgy smedg-y, I like what I like. Bite me O.O

It's got some messed up scenes, but as a whole it's just beautiful in my eyes. This is a great example of a good 'choose your side' anime. Are the ghouls the bad guys? Are the humans going too far? That's up to you. Also, I love the animation (especially the battle scenes). It's intense, and not for the faint of heart.

Currently reading the manga, and damn it's a whole new level of interesting now that I've gone vegetarian.

(includes season 2)

9 Black Butler: Book of Circus

Black Butler: Book of Circus

I love the entire Black Butler series, but this one is my favorite for including super cool circus characters that I got unexpectedly attached to. For me, Black Butler is very special for being one of the first anime I watched (back when I'd get all my recs from watchmojo videos 😅 no hate)... but no other anime has come close to replicating the delicate mish-mash of dark gothic aura, polite badassery, and sprinkles of comedy. Btw if you're not watching it because you think it's not manly enough then you're missing out.

10 Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun

This rom-com is something special. The main couple is cute in a refreshingly noncringey way and all characters are lovable (my fav was Mikoshiba). The comedy aspect was golden! I personally feel like Gekkan is more for experienced anime-fans, otherwise some of the jokes might not make sense as much, but I could be wrong. SECOND SEASON WHERE YOU AT?

11 Kamisama Kiss

Kamisama Kiss

(includes second season)

This was one of those where I thought I'd give it a solid 4/5 and move on but damnnnnn it grew on me! The characters were interesting and I loved the taboo youkai/human relationship. Also, it was surprisingly realistic, or as much as it could be with a supernatural situation like this. What I mean is the romance part plays out more like an epic romance novel instead of your typical anime. I don't even usually like the straight up romance; it's just that well-done. The comedy was also friggin awesome by the end (Mizuki is hilarious).

12 Ergo Proxy

Ergo Proxy

This gets a good amount of bad ratings, and I get it! The plot is confusing and the dialogue is often poetic and riddle-like. Maybe it would've been better to watch the dub. Sometimes I had to just say 'ooo I like your pretty words magic man' and move on. And there were a few really unnecessary filler episodes in the middle while important scenes were literally skipped over for the sake of mystery. But I love the characters, symbolism, and artistry put into it. It has downfalls but I was very invested the whole time and sad when it was over. Special because it broke me out of my hiatus after I got busy and burned out on bad anime.

13 Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

This anime is a lovely escape into a world of adventure (and bouncy boobs, lol). This anime didn't make me want to cry or rethink my life; it just left me smiling in awe through every episode. Although not unique, the dungeon/level-up environment of this was a first for me, and I loved it. The animation makes me smile just thinking about it... Danmachi is just such a treat!

14 Is the Order a Rabbit?

Is the Order a Rabbit?

It's very rare for me to get attached to a plotless slice of life anime, but this was perfect for me! It satisfied my unhealthy obsession with rabbits and just made me relax and enjoy the adorable characters (Chino! Let me love you!) and lovely art style. Just what I needed at that time in my life.

15 Angel's Egg

Angel's Egg

Takes you along on a full-on psychological journey where you can't help but dwell on your own spirituality. It's easy for me to enjoy a Logic vs Faith argument but I never dreamed that I'd see it so well done in an anime to the point where I wanna get a tattoo about it. Also good lord it's pretty to look at in a 'damn this is literally moving art' type of way. Maybe because it's fairly old but don't let that scare you.

16 Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

The characters are so so cute but what really makes this special to me is how they also make the demons just as lovable in an unforced way when explaining their story. I love how the main character senses their sadness and comforts the undeserving demons in their last moments. It just feels so tender and personal to watch him be unconditionally kind, love it so much 💜

17 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Either you've watched it or you're putting it off. DON'T put it off. People love it for a reason ;D

18 your name.

your name.

Never thought a movie would make it on here, but I'd be a friggin' liar if I didn't put this masterpiece on my top anime list. This was so well executed and heart gripping that I can't even count on one hand how many times I cried with it... or how many times I'd be willing to rewatch it. Just see for yourself.

19 Great Pretender

Great Pretender

It can be pretty funny but all in all it's just really damn fun and interesting. Love "Edamame", he felt super realistic and I get attached to characters that get royally screwed over. The music 👌

20 My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia

You know it's a favorite when you stay up til 5am to watch the final episode the second it comes out.

21 Haikyuu!!

Haikyuu!!

As I'm writing this (sometime around fall 2017?), Cross-country at my old school is in season, probably getting close to the first meet of the year... and I miss it so damn much, but this show is so realistic with their teams that it helps me relive those memories in a good way. It hurts sometimes, but the comedy is some of the best, so that really does help :)

Plus, it's got me instrinctively calling the characters 'my babies' aloud about 10 times each episode.

22 Durarara!!

Durarara!!

Durarara has the strongest array of interesting, original characters that I've ever seen! The interactions between all of them just flippin' makes the show all by itself, but add in an engaging plot that always keeps me thinking (seriously, pay attention or drown)? And craaaazy awesome fights on top of that (Shizuo. HOLY sh*t)? COUNT. ME. IN.

23 Kids on the Slope

Kids on the Slope

Everything about this is amazing. I love the characters, dramatic romance, art style, and voice actors, and the music makes me want to smile every time ^___^ I often paused in the middle of episodes, so I could fangirl about the awesomeness of it all

Devil is a part-timer! I love that show, I showed it to my brother when he was working a burger joint. >.<

Never heard of Natsuyuki Rendezvous or Sakamichi no Apollon, I'll check them out after finals are over. ^.^
