Love Love Campus

Oct 1, 2022

I was surprised to learn this was an original work, because the way it's animated it feels like it was based on or is a preview for a webtoon. The episodes are so short that essentially nothing happens. The animation is clunky (especially with character movement). And the sound effects/voice acting is particularly bad. If you're interested, you may as well watch it since it's so short, but prepare to be disappointed.

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva

Sep 30, 2022

I'm a big fan of the Layton series of games, and in my opinion Professor Layton is better experienced in video game format. This movie is fine, but I felt like it missed the mark a bit on the tone of the games, and the interactivity of the puzzles that they tried to add to the movie felt a little clunky. The bits of CG animation weren't badly done, but felt out of place. The story was just okay, a lot of the mysteries and puzzles felt a bit too simple. Antagonist and side characters also really weren't doing it for me. The music was probably my favorite part of the movie. You can watch this without... See full review

When Will Ayumu Make His Move?

Sep 25, 2022

Cute anime, I enjoyed it for what it is, a pretty typical school romance/school life show. Nothing groundbreaking, but pretty solid characters, nice romance, and an overall relaxing watch. If you're into this genre, give it a try. If not, it probably won't be your cup of tea. Would recommend, but you're not missing out on too much if you decide to skip this one.

Nights with a Cat

Sep 25, 2022

Probably my favorite short episode anime ever. Art style is super cute, comedic and also sweet. Creator is very clearly a cat owner, so many relatable scenarios. Theme song is super catchy, voice acting is well done. Can't recommend enough, was a highlight of my week every time a new episode dropped, and to binge it would take you less than an hour. If you like cats and relaxing vibes, you'll certainly enjoy this.

Love After World Domination

Jun 24, 2022

Overall, Love After World Domination is just kind of mediocre and forgettable.  I think one of the biggest issues it has is the combining of action, comedy, and romance. Not that I think that can't be done well, but in this case it felt a bit choppy and the tone shifts often felt unnatural. Other big issue is characters, most everyone is just kind of uninteresting. I wasn't feeling the chemistry between the leads either. Animation is clean but generally boring. I will say, I did enjoy the opening song. Intrigued by the premise, but ultimately underwhelmed. Wouldn't recommend.

Tomodachi Game

Jun 24, 2022

As is the case with a lot of high stakes game anime, I liked the concept and maybe the first couple episodes, but I find this genre is often dragged down by weird pacing, unlikeable characters, and boring dialogue. Particularly in Tomodachi Game, I had a really hard time with the characters. I found it hard to find anyone to really root for, and when that's the case the high stakes games lose a lot of the stakes because I'm not invested.  Overall just felt sort of uninspired, can't really recommend this one. And if you do decide to try it, I would recommend waiting until another season comes out... See full review

Komi Can't Communicate 2nd Season

Jun 23, 2022

If you were a bit iffy on the first season, like I was, I would recommend giving the second season a try. I enjoyed the new side characters that were introduced more in this season compared to the first. There is also an increased focus on Komi and Tadano's relationship which I enjoyed, and I just found myself looking forward to each new episode. I hope there's a season three!

Tales from Earthsea

Jun 4, 2022

I'm a big Studio Ghibli fan, but this is certainly one of the worst films this studio has put out that I've seen. Of course, it's still a Studio Ghibli movie, so it's not so bad, but certainly not their best. Animation is solid, of course. Music is also fine, but the absence of Joe Hisaishi can definitely be felt. The music doesn't have the same memorability and impact as it does in the movies Hisaishi works on. Characters are fairly forgettable, and villains are pretty generically evil. Biggest issue is the story. It manages to be plot hole-filled, boring, slow, and generic. I have got to imagine... My Senpai is Annoying

Bubble

May 20, 2022

Stunning visuals. The animation is definitely the main reason I rank this as high as I do. Everything else feels lacking, soundtrack is hit and miss. Characters are flat. Romance feels forced. Plot was overly ambitious and predictable at the same time. Would only recommend if you can overlook a lot of flaws and just have a good time with the animation.

Komi Can't Communicate

May 3, 2022

Main reason I gave this show a 6.5/10 is because of the side characters. Due to the main conceit of the show (Komi making 100 friends) there's obviously quite a few characters introduced. And besides Komi and her main buddies, most of the side characters really don't do it for me. Ranging from actively annoying/insane to underdeveloped/boring to just okay. I enjoy the interactions between Komi and her two main friends as well as her family the best, so in each episode I usually found myself enjoying myself for half of it on average. Would still recommend, but I wasn't super impressed. I would say I think... See full review

Sabikui Bisco

Apr 4, 2022

Really enjoyable animation and soundtrack. Main character duo was always fun to watch interact and grow. Character and world design was unique and just cool to watch. Story concept was original and the action scenes are very well done. My only complaints are: some of the minor characters and villain feel a bit flat, and the tone/story shift in the last few episodes was a bit abrupt and unnatural. If you have a hard time suspending your disbelief and forgetting logic for a while to just enjoy a show, you may not enjoy this one. It does require quite a bit of that. However, I would still recommend... See full review

Semantic Error

Mar 12, 2022

I'm not sure how this compares to the novel, but now I'm going to have to read it since the anime left me wanting more! The episodes are quite short, although I'm impressed by the amount of chemistry between the leads that they were able to create in such little time. Although, of course, it was still a pretty limited glimpse into their lives.  The animation is simple and a little clunky, the movement especially looks stiff sometimes, and it feels like simplistic chibi forms are used more as a crutch than as a stylistic choice. But it's still pleasant to watch. I'm always starved for more... See full review

Run with the Wind

Mar 12, 2022

Really solid sports anime. Good cast, all of the main 10 got some amount of backstory and development (although of course some more than others). The last episode made me sob, I didn't realize how attached I was to this show until it was over and how much I liked the message. Makes me want to go out and run or find something to be passionate about. Really great story and great feeling to be left with. My only main complaint I can think of is that most of the minor characters outside of the 10 main guys felt extraneous and unnecessary.  I didn't think this would be my kind of show based off the first... The Way of the Househusband

Mar 11, 2022

I didn't enjoy this style of animation, I thought I would get used to it, but it distracted me until the very end. It felt less stylistic and more lazy, in my opinion.  Cute premise, but for me it got tired after the first episode. It wasn't a show that got me to laugh out loud, just sort of amused me sometimes. I think there's a lot of potential with the premise but the execution was a little lacking. If the humor is up your alley, you'll probably enjoy this show if you can stand the animation. For me I probably won't be watching season two any time soon.

Haikyuu!! Second Season

Mar 10, 2022

If you liked the first season, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't like this season as well. I was afraid after watching the first season that things might get a bit repetitive in the second season. However, there was plenty of character growth, new characters, new conflicts, new situations, it didn't feel stale at all. It was a really emotional watch, and I had a ton of fun with it. Can't recommend enough!

Haikyuu!! vs. "Akaten"

Mar 10, 2022

5 to 10% of this OVA is repeat footage, but the rest is new additional context. If you don't watch it you're not missing out on anything, it's pretty clearly just filler. Some comedic moments, some good character moments, almost no volleyball. If you're desperate for more Haikyuu content definitely give it a watch, but for me it was just okay.

Haikyuu!!

Mar 9, 2022

Haikyuu isn't particularly original, it's a fairly typical sports anime, and is often pretty cheesy. However, I was extremely emotionally invested in this show, more than anything I've watched in a while. I mean, actively smiling, laughing, crying, cheering while watching. And that comes from someone that has almost no interest in sports. Great characters, especially Kageyama's development, fun to watch (I binged it in two days), pleasant sound and animation. I will say, I think there is a lot of potential for Haikyuu to get stale. It will have to really keep up with adding new plot points and... See full review

Bungo Stray Dogs

Mar 7, 2022

I tentatively recommend this show. Despite its flaws it managed to keep my interest. Animation is really strong, and the character design is unique. Characters are a mixed bag. There are several with potential, but I would say almost the entire cast was a bit flat and underdeveloped, although maybe that is a product of this being only 12 episodes and the characters will get more love next season.  Story was a bit wandering and a bit basic. It was okay. I think this show struggles to balance comedy with serious emotional moments and action. The tone shifts were often sudden and... See full review

Ouran High School Host Club

Mar 7, 2022

Not to say that this anime is flawless, but I remember watching this when I was 13, and now that I'm an adult I still fully enjoyed myself on rewatch.  The animation is slightly dated at this point, but still well done and unique. The main characters are a lot of fun to watch and learn more about. The comedy is still great and I found myself laughing out loud during most episodes. I appreciate its self awareness and use of animation for comedic purposes, as well as still being able to have more serious, emotional moments. I also loved watching the relationships and growth between characters... See full review

Loveless

Mar 6, 2022

There are almost no likeable or enjoyable characters in this anime. The story and pacing are a hot mess, and the last two episodes felt like a fever dream. Nothing makes sense and there are so many unanswered questions.  The only good thing I can say about this is that it made me laugh out loud with just how ridiculous some scenes are. I think the only reason someone would like this series is nostalgia, I never watched it when it came out and nothing holds up well today. Cannot recommend you stay away from this show more, and that comes from a big fan of BL.

The Case Files of Jeweler Richard

Mar 5, 2022

Would recommend this anime for anyone. Good pacing, unique premise, interesting story. The relationship between the two main characters is great to watch develop. I appreciated that the minor characters were kept minor so that the two leads could really shine. I also found the subject matter of jewels and minerals very interesting. Really unique show that I haven't seen done before, relaxing tone while still able to have serious emotional moments and interesting story beats.

Fruits Basket 1st Season

Mar 3, 2022

Definitely the strongest part of this show is the characters. Even minor characters are given backstory, motivations, development, actual personalities. It's refreshing to see an anime focus so much on the characters and give everyone in the cast a lot of love and a lot of screentime. Even if there's a character you dislike, there are very few characters that feel underdeveloped. And I respect that a lot. And when there's a cast of characters this fleshed out, it doesn't really matter what the story is doing, because it's just fun to watch different people interact and just talk to each other. Good... Tanaka-kun is Always Listless

Mar 2, 2022

Animation is well done and pleasant. Main two characters are always fun to watch. Most of the side characters are decent as well, although a couple got a bit stale. Lovely, relaxing tone that I've never really seen from a comedic anime before. Nice easy watch that doesn't take itself too seriously. Would recommend.

The Betrayal Knows My Name

Feb 28, 2022

Can't really recommend this one. It was a struggle to finish. Especially if you go in for the BL, you will be sorely disappointed. Honestly, there are shows that aren't given the BL tag that have more romance than this. Story is directionless and wandering, pacing and tone are all over the place. Several characters are flat and underdeveloped, especially considering the show had 24 whole episodes to do something with them. Some character interactions/reactions/dialogue are distractingly unrealistic.  Main character has more chemistry with the antagonist than the guy he's supposed to be in love... See full review

My Hero Academia 4

Feb 28, 2022

I said this about season three as well, but I think this is the new weakest season of MHA. It had a lot of good but also a lot of bad. I think in one word, this season was inconsistent. The two major story arcs of the season are some of the weakest so far, in my opinion. Some of the new characters introduced are also some of my least favorite so far.  The tone difference between part one and part two of the season is really noticeble, and the last two episodes of the season feel like they should have been the start of season five. The pacing is all over the place, and the frequent flashbacks are... See full review

Hitorijime My Hero

Feb 27, 2022

The rational part of my mind can recognize that this anime is incredibly flawed and honestly, not great. But my BL-starved soul takes what it can get and I couldn't help but enjoy myself to some extent watching this. BL honestly just makes my standards for a show plummet, so I would say if you're not coming into this for the BL you probably won't enjoy yourself.

I wouldn't recommend this to people not already familiar with this game. I went in with no context at all and the characters are very flat and one-note, and the short episodic stories are pretty basic.  This feels like extra content you may enjoy if you already know these characters, not a standalone show.
