Bocchi the Rock!

Mar 28, 2023

I gotta tell ya. It was perfect. Perfect. Everything. Down to the last minute details.

The love that obviously went into this show is immesurable, and almost tangible. The beauty of the anime itself was worth the watch. It's so visually appealing, fun to watch, it will keep you hooked from one episode to the other. The story is so cute. I'm sure dear reader is aware, but it's about a socially awkward girl who has vapid dreams of being in a rock band, being rich and famous, and never having to interact with anyone ever again. Instead, she finds herself growing and slowly overcoming her social anxiety. I wouldn't correlate this to being the driving plot of the anime, like in Komi Can't Communicate, but rather a quirk of the pink haired Bocchi. The main driving plot is rining out the quirks of the band itself. From the standpoint of the target audience, it's perfect.

That said, I do have some issues from the standpoint of the non-target audience. As a westerner, I know I have no right to really say what is objectively correct or incorrect for eastern media. But, I have grown accustomed to western drama. Shows here are dramatisized to extremes. There's no tension between characters; rather, it's just viewing growth of a teenage girl who's probably autistic. The love that went into making the show is undeniable - but it's not exactly a  show you watch for the lore. It's something to watch to feel good. There's nothing wrong with it in any sense, it's just that there's no western equivalent anymore. The biggest American shows of all time: House, Law and Order, Suits, The Boys, Marvel/DC shows and movies, all have deep lore that is made to intrigue the viewer. Some anime even does the same thing, but not to the degree the west dows. Shows like this really set itself apart from western media in that it's simply happy. It's honestly refreshing from an outsider standpoint. I would say that it's the perfect show to introduce western viewers who have never watched a show of this medium before to - but it's a double edged sword, because there is nothing better after this.
