Haibane Renmei

Sep 1, 2021

I'll preface this by simply saying that Haibane Renmei is not for everyone, and that's okay. If you need action or lots of stylish, energetic animation, this isn't going to be your jam. If you like witty comedy or are into edgy gore shows, then give Haibane Renmei a pass. If you like thoughtful character-centered stories with a lot of heart and can tolerate a slow-burn pace-wise, I cannot recommend Haibane Renmei enough. This is the third anime from creator Yoshitoshi ABe (the first being the legendary mind-screw Serial Experiments Lain) and the first where ABe was the primary creative force: artist and... KINMOZA!

Apr 15, 2021

Kiniro Mosaic is the most underwhelmed I've ever been by one of these moeblob slice-of-life comedies. After months of seeing clips on Tumblr and Twitter I decided to give it a try, only to find that almost all of the most memorable bits are contained in the first two episodes. The animation is decent enough but there's no semblence of a story even for moeblob comedies. The characters are also sadly kind of one-note, though they serve well enough as cute girls being sweet and cute. However, the comedy writing isn't very strong and the characters don't have enough depth to them to elevate this above Every... See full review

The Garden of Sinners Movie 7: ......Not Nothing Heart. (Murder Speculation Part B)

Mar 25, 2021

As this is by far my favorite anime series of all time, picking between installments is like Sophie's Choice for me but if I had to point to a single entry as a stand-out, this is it. You can go into this one blind and get a good, cinematic-release-length supernatural murder mystery story but there is so much payoff here for those who've been with these characters for the previous 6 films. Shiki is finally forced to grapple with her inner demons for one last time as the actions of her past come back to haunt her. And Mikiya must prove once and for all just how far he's willing to go to save Shiki's soul... See full review

The Garden of Sinners Movie 1: Thanatos. (Overlooking View)

Mar 25, 2021

I'll get one thing out of the way. The film series "Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners" is probably my favorite anime. From the early days of Ufotable's first steps towards becoming one of the best animation studios anywhere to Yuki Kajiura's hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, this first film does more to get me invested in 50 minutes than some 1 cour anime take in their entire 6-ish hour runs. In less than an hour, it takes the time to build suspense and mystery with clever writing and even cleverer editing. If you are the type of viewer who needs plot points explicitly stated in chronological... See full review

The Garden of Sinners: Epilogue

Mar 25, 2021

How much you will like this epilogue, I think, depends entirely on how much you like the rest of the series as a whole. I love Kara no Kyoukai more than my next breath of air so I am hooked from the beginning to the end of this epilogue. If the rest of the series isn't necessarily your favorite thing, you'll probably get bored of this in a hurry. There's no action, no intrigue, just two characters talking as the snow falls around them.

The Seven Heavenly Virtues

Mar 20, 2021

Its pretty bad. Not quite the worst thing, though, and the episodes aren't even 5 mins including credits. The animation is about on par with that of a good hentai. If you just want some anime tiddy in a hurry, i suppose you could do worse.

Blue Submarine No. 6

Jul 14, 2017

Blue Sub 6 was recently re-released on Crunchyroll So I gave it a re-watch and just finished that moments ago. Here's my thoughts.

Story - Not great tbh. When this show aired almost two decades ago on Toonami, I recorded it to VHS after they'd made a huge deal about it in the weeks leading up to it. That was, I believe, 1999? And I was in middle school, so I obviously had terrible opinions about everything. One of them was thinking that Blue Sub 6 was rad. After re-watching it as an adult, I can tell you that the 4 episodes this OVA takes to play out are terribly paced, full of filler, and have a... See full review

Fractale

Mar 24, 2015

I'm honestly surprised to find that people dislike Fractale as much as they do, especially fans who seem especially knowledgeable about anime. I've been rapid-fire reviewing anime for over a year now at 4kyeah.com with my friends and, compared to the dozens of anime we've spotlighted, or even the hundreds of anime I've seen by myself, Fractale may be the most I have ever been intrigued by an anime. If only the title made any goddamn sense. Story The story is probably the weakest aspect of the show, though I still enjoyed it. It's an interesting far future sci-fi setting where the technology is... See full review

Steins;Gate

Nov 30, 2014

Steins;Gate is a legend, one of the most popular anime ever. Apparently. I couldn't really speak to that because I really, really hate it. The animation style is interesting (though not mind-blowing) and the sound design is basically fine. But the characters and plot of this show are painfully irritating. I'd honestly rather have triple-pneumonia than watch another episode of this show. John Titor? Are you kidding me with this s**t? But the main reason is simply that the main cast, basically without exception, are wholly unlikeable and really annoying. The worst offender is the main character, mad... See full review
