I suppose this would be entertaining if it were the 1st anime of this kind I was watching, but after Deadman Wonderland, Elfen Lied, Mirai Nikki, Tokyo Ghoul, Juuni Taisen and the like, it's now lame how it shoves tits, gore and 'cruel humans are cruel' for no good reason in my face

art is worse, characters are worse, dialogue is worse. the magic from series 1 is gone

hold my drink.

so the original Garou opens with scenes of violence and brutality and these establish the world and backstory pretty effectively - fantasy medieval times suck and all that. then follows a postcoital scene and it serves as characterisation for the MCs: German is a womaniser so it makes sense to see him womanising etc. pretty strong beginning overall.

then, when making the film they thought, everyone liked the tits and violence, let's open with that again but this time in the service of NOTHING

I appreciated the villains' camp costumes and the inventive enemy mech designs but felt once I've seen a few eps, I've seen them all. if the main characters had any personality traits whatsoever, then I might get invested (ok, Joe IS a massive arsehole which I guess is A character trait but every time I thought he might have to face how his recklessness jeopardises the team, the plot does an ass-pull, so all is good in the end, no consequences)

I was looking forward to this classic but unfortunately I detest religion and this is peppered with creepy religious rituals that take me back to my religious childhood. and I don't want to go there. if this is the intention - then well done, anime

the first 2 eps inundate you with long, civilisations-spanning back-story and I'm like: I'm all lubed up for epic sci-fi, now show me the money!

then ep 3 comes along and it's the most trite story in the galaxy. why exercise imagination about what an alien race could be like, when you can have them wear garb that's a mashup of ancient earth cultures, and have their 'men' abide by a rigid warrior code and stuff, and have their 'women' be all devoted and shit. that's never been done before. fantastic!

ah, the 'some people get superpowers, which leads to discrimination and power-grab conflicts in society' trope. an anime doesn't have to be original to be good. but Hamatora is neither, with boring ass dialogue and try-hard characters

you're kind of dropped into the middle of the story as you're presumed to have read the manga, which is fine because there's nothing groundbreaking here: overdesigned bishounen vow to rescue the girl MC from a gay-coded villain and his minions; a collection of truly the best of tropes

it would have been interesting to explore the background of the trio of dieties & Hell Girl at all, but maybe Japanese people are familiar with them already. I've seen them recur elsewhere, like in Requiem from the Darkness

on rewatch, this is even cheesier than I remember. I get misophonia whenever I perceive someone's voice as fake, it usually only happens with songs but I got it for Hell Girl's voice so apparently really bad anime dubs can trigger it as well

the SOL elements were alright, I guess. but inappropriate relashionship sure is inappropriate. am I expected to root for the teacher in this 'takes itself seriously' romance anime? just wait until your student graduates, ffs. or make it a hentai. oh, there's no smut either, so fuck this anime

just boringly executed. for a masterclass in creating atmosphere with the same animation style, there's Kagewani. 

a much shittier Natsume's Book of Friends. every line of dialogue I kept thinking 'that's not how people talk to each other'. that's because it's only used to set up plot points and that in turn is badly disguised. with skill, it is possible to info-dump without offending anyone's intelligence but here it's on the level of 'of course I would do that, because I am your brother' 

So, after being hit on the head, a 6 year old child says 'I believe you're not human because no human would ever hit a child like that'. have you ever met a 6 year old? they're barely aware of behavioural norms n do not articulate generalisations in this way ffs. (a couple of scenes later the same child's very human uncle hits her on the head, but that contradiction is lost on the writers)

well-written child characters who act their age are the rarest of all so here's a list:

1. Barakamon - Naru's a little shit. most disarming

2. Poco's Udon World - the children never say anything coherent, take every opportunity to run away and cry whenever something doesn't go their way. most accurate representation of a child

3. Chibi Maruko-chan - Maru-chan's a selfish brat but slowly learns thru each experience that actions have consequences, empathy and foresight

4. Dororo - the way Dororo regresses upon meeting a mother figure or doesn't realise what 'night work' implies. 10 tears/10

5. Made in Abyss - fearless exploration to the max and 'I'll show you mine if you show me yours'

6. Ghibli films - children's imaginations run wild and old people adore them

I'm not an appreciator of episodic drama. it was 20mins of me waiting for this guy to get over it. like: boo hoo my single-parent mum wasn't around enough because she had to work to provide for me. you don't say. or: boo hoo she wasn't affectionate enough. well, now you're old enough to realise that some people aren't, and that their best is not good enough for you, and you are now free to be as affectionate as you like. see? I can't watch it. I just get my knickers in a twist

to make the audience invested in the characters/story takes skill, when the writers can't be bothered with that, they can just shove a cute child in there, to be rescued/killed or annoy the shit out of me by always butting in on the action (IWPG ep.1 I'm coming for you)

this is pretty well-made and sweet all around: competent and spunky heroine navigates the spiritual world of Japanese folklore, defeating bishounen youkai with her kindness (did someone say harem?). I'm just not an appreciator of shoujo romance: everyone shouts too much, the humour's a bit Punch & Judy, main love interest usually a knobend
