why I dropped you

every anime I dropped, with episode count (sorry for the entries with no description, I've let the list slide but it's being updated)
1 100% Pascal-sensei (2017)

100% Pascal-sensei (2017)

painfully unfunny

2 18if

an interesting idea boringly executed. for a superior 'teenage girls' problems solved' psychedelic anime there's Onyankopon

3 3x3 Eyes

3x3 Eyes

if I were a child in the 90s I'd like this anime

dropped twice

4 6 Lovers

6 Lovers

the episode where a man is rubbing a cat's nipples... that's it, anime has gone too far

5 8 Man

8 Man

it is interesting how fully formed in terms of concept the first cyborg anime was and how little the tropes have evolved since, given how often they are copied. luckily, the old-timey dub is a satisfying listen because there's not much animation to look at. this anime is full of dialogue jems such as:

Saucer Lips

...........she's now my secretary

I'm a simple hardworking millionaire

but this is an episodic children's show so I don't feel the need to experience every episode

6 Ace Attorney

Ace Attorney

the mysteries are not presented well. that's all I care about in a mystery-solving anime

7 A Certain Magical Index

A Certain Magical Index

I almost made it to the end, but the tropes, damn, they're sucking out my will to live. I wish that was my superpower, actually - immunity to anime cliches

8 Active Raid

Active Raid

I really wanted to like it, hoping for a sort of Patlabor meets Psycho-Pass. alas, where those two had interesting characters who meshed as a team and were stand-out sci-fis, this was an all-over-the-place anime lacking charm

9 AD Police

AD Police

lame and watered down compared to the OVAs. rewatch update: utter rubbish, muito garbageio

dropped twice

10 Aho-Girl

I remember back at school there were pupils who couldn't help giggling every time the biology teacher said 'sexual reproduction' (in the days before internet porn, yo). this strikes me as having just as sophisticated a level of humour

11 Akame ga Kill!

Akame ga Kill!

I was quite enjoying the edginess until it got all harem-y on me

12 Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

they couldn't even be bothered to give everyone consistent in-world outfits. fuck this anime

13 Akiba-chan

was it a nightmare where I was trapped in a totalitarian regime of cuteness? no, it was just the 1st episode of Akiba-chan

14 Akiba's Trip: The Animation

Akiba's Trip: The Animation

a good looking but very dumb show. keep your clothes on, love

15 Alice & Zouroku

Alice & Zouroku

poor attempt to pull at my heart strings

16 All Out!!

All Out!!

a middle of the road sports anime when there are so many awesome sports anime

17 A Predator in a Skirt

A Predator in a Skirt

there's 'rape fantasy' and then there's 'rapey'

18 Arabian Nights: Sinbad no Boken

Arabian Nights: Sinbad no Boken

19 Armitage III Dual-Matrix

Armitage III Dual-Matrix

within 15mins I felt it was not as good as the original

20 Astro Boy (1963)

Astro Boy (1963)

I really enjoyed the first 3 eps (Astroboy is a great character) but it's very much a 60s anime: with outdated humour and for children

21 Attack on Titan: Junior High

Attack on Titan: Junior High

amusing but not funny enough to sit through the entire series

22 Bakemonogatari

I'm not here to kink-shame but this is not the first nisioisin work I've seen where girl attacks male MC with a sharp object -_-. anyway, watching this feels like intruding on someone else's fantasy, which is fine, I don't need to be 'served' by every single anime but even aside from this aspect, Bakemonogatari is pretty while doing nothing

23 Bananya

Mitchiri Neko is better

24 Bartender

I really liked the drinks trivia but that's about it. a Sobranie cigarette would enhance the mood

25 Birdy the Mighty: Decode

Birdy the Mighty: Decode

there's too much highschool in my Birdy. dope animation though and Birdy's design is gorgeous

26 Black Butler

Black Butler

I thought this is popular because it's good. I was wrong.

I didn't like the comic relief characters, listening to the ''''British'''' accents is true suffering and putting up with BL tropes without any actual BL is just sad

oh this was a slog on rewatch. the tonal whiplash is through the roof. the humour level is - people fall over and that's funny, the plot is - women are mutilated because the Grim Ripper is against abortions. ouch, my neck. it is possible to have gag humour and dark stuff in the same story successfully, like Fullmetal Alchemist, but it has to be done well, you can't just trace over joke scenes from other anime and call it a day.

Halex's Watching Guide was a lifesaver; I watched the canon eps he recommended, skipped over series 2 and watched all the Book of... stuff, which were much superior. finally, the story is allowed to be what it wants to be, it's dark and they are busy getting on with the plot. it's still silly and fan-servicey and that's fine, because now it feels like they have confidence in the source material and in the audience's intelligence. they also shout-out Moldovan wine, so I know someone there has good taste

dropped twice

27 Blassreiter

the fanservice is a pathetic lowest-common-denominator attempt. which is jarring when paired with the navel-gazing narration. just because they have taken on complex themes, doesn't mean they excelled at exploring them. the editing is quite abrupt and the direction is busy, whether that's to anyone's liking or not, it definitely makes it memorable

28 Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond

Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond

series 1: I have a plot and it's a big deal, just you wait till series 2, here's some filler

series 2: bruh, bruh, check me out bruh, ain't I cool bruh

29 Bloodivores

made with the finesse and software available at the time of Mortal Combat

30 Blood Lad

Blood Lad

it started with fun and energy but soon it became clear that this is the kind of anime where the boys have personalities and the girls have tits

31 Blue Exorcist Movie

Blue Exorcist Movie

Virdelet said everything I was gonna say but better, so just read his concise review

32 Blue Gender

Blue Gender

oh it starts out so well: genuinely high-stakes suspence, Yuji is struggling with his moral compass and how to adapt to the new reality, all the sci-fi elements work well.

but then: to show he's a 'nice guy', they have him take care of a little girl. wow *eyes roll* what unique character development, only a complete monster wouldn't empathise with a helpless child.

then there's the Pocahontas arc *eye rolling intensifies*.

overall, the series spends too much time on Yuji's penis feelings and I couldn't wait anymore for the aliens' origins to be revealed, which is what drew me in in the 1st place

33 Body Jack: Tanoshii Yutai Ridatsu

Body Jack: Tanoshii Yutai Ridatsu

boring school bullshit at the beginning, skipped to the sex scenes and they were tame. as a lover of oyster diving, I bemoan the dearth of grown-ups in GL. if I were attracted to little girls, anime would have me covered. very covered

34 Bonjour♪Sweet Love Patisserie

Bonjour♪Sweet Love Patisserie

this blew so much kira kira fuwa fuwa in my face, that I felt disoriented. when the dust cleared, there was no substance to this anime. also, no fucking patisserie. I actually find most harems grotesque and vapid

35 Bonobono

bullying is played for laughs, which is bizarre in a children's show

36 Bonobono (2016)

Bonobono (2016)

I watch children's anime to learn Japanese, but the rudimentary dialogue bores me after a while

37 Boogiepop Phantom

Boogiepop Phantom

I just can't warm up to light-novel adaptations where everyone takes themselves so seriously. the characters are full of affectations, and I'm not impressed by the non-linear storyline either. yeah, I disliked Baccano and Kara no Kyoukai as well. I'm a one wolf wolfpack and that's how we roll

dropped twice

38 Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040

Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040

hardsuits with heels. because they're ladies, get it? fuck this anime

39 Bungo Stray Dogs

Bungo Stray Dogs

like Kekkai Sensen but less fun and with shit humour

dropped twice

40 Calligraffiti

I watch a lot of independent animation and normally have a high tolerance for them and an open-mindedness about them. so this has the distinction of being unwatchable

41 Candy Boy

Candy Boy

the voice acting is so over-the-top, they are doing their best to liven up the interactions but even the most consummate pro cannot mask the fact that this is the most boring dialogue. how did u manage to make icecream sound boring? I felt my brain cells lining up to jump off a cliff in protest

42 Captain Harlock

Captain Harlock

'a woman's pride is not the same as a man's pride'. h e  s a y s. a b o u t  h i m s e l f. hahaha

43 Casshan

this has a very strong beginning but suffers from having to fill the middle eps without plot progression; many series in the old days were like that

44 Casshern Sins

Casshern Sins

I have never felt so disappointed by an anime in all my life. it has the most beautiful character designs and background art, with perfectly-fitting atmospheric sound design but, oh my fuck, the dialogue is the most self-regarding, pseudo-philosophical drivel I have ever heard, spouted by pretentious characters moping about the crumbling lanscape.

the dub is insufferable because they decided what would fit the tone of this gloomy anime is high-pitched cute-girl anime voices, with sexy sighs and heavy breathing.

yes, it is possible to make a great post-apocalyptic, 'gaze into the distance and ponder your existence', long series where nothing happens. Texhnolyze did it and it was brilliant! watch eet

45 Chain Chronicle: The Light of Haecceitas

Chain Chronicle: The Light of Haecceitas

fantasy cliches galore

46 Chaos;Child

I completed Chaos;Head out of fascination at what a bewildering clusterfuck it was at the time. now, a few iterations of the franchise later, and familiar with the formula, Chaos;Child feels like a boring every-harem

47 Charady no Joke na Mainichi

Charady no Joke na Mainichi

kill it with fire

48 Chargeman Ken!

Chargeman Ken!

infamous entertaining garbage. mileage varies

49 Cheating Craft

Cheating Craft

ep. 1 was fun, had an interesting premise well executed. I still had a feeling it was going to go the way of most battle shounen, following the formula to the letter

50 Chibi Maruko-chan

Chibi Maruko-chan

this family show is quality. the art is so beautiful! I would have fun watching it with children rather than on my own. as an adult, I can't sit thru all 142 life lessons that a 6-year-old needs to learn

I can understand dropping some. But space battleship Yamato? Come on man. You can't turn your brain off and enjoy something. It's a battleship in space and a classic for a reason.

Woodsworth Nov 19, 2023

Howling with laughter, this is great! Agree on a lot of those!

Lenachan3ko Nov 15, 2022

Seeing you drop some of these shows is understandable but pls if you ever have the chance please give the Ace Attorney games a try, the anime absolutely sucks at what the games tried to do and I wholeheartedly mean that. Same with the Persona anime as well , a lot of anime adaptations of video games usually fall flat and come off as generic because of how rushed they are

icelance Aug 25, 2022

If you came to watch Yosuga no sora for incest, just watch ep 1, 7, 10, 11 and 12.

UsagiDandere Nov 21, 2021

Holy shit I've seen a lot of lists over the years but this might be my favorite 🤣 you're so honest that I'm jealous; sorry you get hate for your personal opinion. They're totally understandable reasons too and I was cackling even on ones I like. Like Diabolik Lovers ahahah I love a bit of trash now and then just all in all great list, seriously keep it up. "Guys have personalities and girls have tits" perfectly put into words why I have so many more male fav characters than fem, way too many anime are like that sadly.
