Little Witch Academia TV

Jun 26, 2017

Little Witch Academia, a studio Trigger show about a young witch in training and her journey through the magical world. Our protagonist, Atsuko (Akko) Kagari, is enrolled into the witch school of Luna Nova, the setting for the show, and she meets two witches who would become her closest friends, Lotte Yanson and Sucy Manbavaran. That's the set up achieved in the first couple of episodes. The show is all about Akko's progression as very inept witch without any ability to fly slowly improving her craft through her own determination and the help of the secondary cast. This is during a crisis in the... The Red Turtle

Mar 10, 2017

This film is what you point to when you want an example of how to tell a story without the need for dialogue. It is also the directorial debut of Michaël Dudok de Wit with Studio Ghibli and the European Studio Wild Bunch behind him. A fantastic way to make one's debut into feature films, that is for sure. Story and Characters The story revolves around a man without a name that we know of. He finds himself stranded on a strange island, giving vibes of the film Castaway (although it quickly stops feeling like that film). Eventually he finds a red turtle and this is where the film takes a turn for... See full review

Shelter

Mar 10, 2017

What we have here is a music video collaboration between Porter Robinson and A-1 Pictures. As far as music videos go I would say this one was quite good. Story and Characters Since we have a music video here we can't really expect the most expansive story. There is some narration at the start and the end of the anime but that's it. Still, the story is interesting enough. A girl has been sent from her home planet and lives in a virtual world, one that she can change at a whim. Her home planet had suffered a catastrophe of sorts so her father made it possible for her to live, with the aforementioned living... See full review

The House of Small Cubes

Mar 10, 2017

Look at that, a French title. That might look pretentious but this little film about an old man living in a tiny house is definitely worth your time. Story and Characters We have a simple premise. An old man lives in a little house out at sea with a rising sea level. The name comes from the fact that he must build a new house on top as the level rises above the current one. The film follows the old man as he goes through the many houses he had and remembers his life, a truly wonderful story with a lot of heart. All we are given about him are the flashbacks we have but that is all we need to gain a full... See full review

Honobono Log

Mar 10, 2017

Honobono Log is a nice, short anime about mundane situations between couples. It's a very simple anime but it's a calm, relaxing little thing. Story and Characters This is all barebones. We don't really know anything about the characters and there is no story. We instead get several situations, one per episode, of different couples doing something normal, something we can see in everyday life. They are a nice depiction of such situations. Of course the downside is the lack of substance. There is not really much to it other than showing said mundane scenarios with different romantic partners. The pacing... See full review

Aki no Kanade

Mar 10, 2017

An anime tamago about a girl and her drumming. Aki returns to her village after living in the city as a professional drummer, although she is not having the best time of it. Story and Characters The story is a simple one. Our main character Aki goes back to her home village to help out with the festival. She meets with people she knew before she had left like her old teacher and schoolmates. A lot of the show is dealt in flashbacks to before she had left when she was pursuing her passion for drumming whilst at school. The pacing is quite slow and we don't really get to know much about anyone other... See full review

Battle Angel Alita

Mar 10, 2017

Battle Angel Alita is a fun, cyberpunk OVA about an android named Gally; found in the dump by a cybernetics doctor. The anime is a solid effort in the cyberpunk genre, and whilst not the most engrossing it is definitely a good time. The OVA sets up a very cyberpunk-esque environment; we have this decrepit town rife with crime whilst up floating above is the city of Zalem, described as some sort of 'promised land' by certain characters. The style the OVA boasts really reinforces the grim environment that Scrap Iron City possesses, a City with little hope. As for the characters that populate the city we get... See full review

Uchuu Kazoku Carlvinson

Mar 10, 2017

SpanglishJC's Uchuu Kazoku Carlvinson 'Short Review' My first impressions of this show at a glance left me expecting little. What I got out of this anime was a thoroughly enjoyable little OVA about a group of misfit aliens looking after an orphaned child. Story and Characters The story is very straightforward. After some unfortunate circumstances a little baby girl is left without parents and the aforementioned group of aliens take it upon themselves to look after her until someone comes to pick her up. Whilst a simple story the anime does it well with the use of some fun characters that I... See full review

Utopa

Mar 10, 2017

An anime egg… er I mean tamago ova, taking place after mankind has had to build sky cities due to some problems back on ol' Earth. After many years they have managed to modify animals into bipedal, talking beings. However despite the premise, this anime really is just about three of these little animals running about in a big forest. Story and Characters So we have our three little critters in a big forest. There is not much plot other than this; a seed made its way into a sky city and was discovered by the aforementioned three. They decide to go down to the surface and see what has gone on. It... Ghost in the Shell

Mar 10, 2017

Story and Characters Our story follows Motoko Kusanagi, AKA the Major, as she searches for an elusive hacker named The Puppet Master. This notorious figure had been hacking into important people, such as governmental officials. Oshii has managed to craft a very clever film that doesn't just rely on lots of action. Action scenes are used sparingly but effectively, building up tension before each scene. It's grounded and keeps you watching. The real meat is the stuff in-between the action, most notably Motoko's struggles with her own humanity. She is a full cyborg, consisting of a fully cybernetic body... See full review

Kirara

Mar 9, 2017

Kirara follows a ghost that had died on her wedding day travelling back in time to see her fiancé again. The catch is that she is sent back to before they were ever together, oh no! Story and Characters What can I say about the story really? We really just have a guy who longs after a girl whilst the ghost of that same girl, only from the future, makes a nuisance of herself. The anime just rushes through the plot, Ghost Kirara is not really fazed at having gone back in time and her younger self was not particularly surprised to see her dead, future self floating about. The anime is just... See full review

I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying

Mar 9, 2017

Ah, now this is a fine example of a great, short form show. The anime follows the very loveable Tsunashi couple in their everyday lives as they try to understand more about each other. A short introduction for a short show, let's get to the 'review'. Story and Characters ICUWMHiS follows a fairly episodic structure. Episodes have their own self-contained events that do occasionally get carried over into later episodes; there is a light, overarching narrative throughout the show too. Our characters do grow to become more accustomed with each other's quirks, most notably Hajime's otaku nature. He is a heavy... See full review

Robot Girls Z

Mar 9, 2017

This anime was alright. Spoilers for my thoughts there I suppose. What the show lacked in substance it made up for with its silly humour and fairly funny characters, making this show rather enjoyable for the 80+ minute runtime it boasts. Story and Characters There was no real story present here, it's just things happening exclusive to the episode it happens in. The only thing that carries over between episodes is the rivalry between the Robot Girls and the villain Baron Ashura and her minions; working for some sort of higher up, Doctor Hell. The Robot Girls are named after various mecha from anime... See full review

Haibane Renmei

Dec 25, 2016

Now where do I start with this one? I can start by saying that I had a wonderful time watching Haibane Renmei, it had an intriguing story, very strong characters and a world shrouded in mystery. Everything comes together to create a show that I have to consider a masterpiece. Any ways, let's have enough of my waffling and move on with my waffling review. Story and characters Our anime follows the lives of a group of Haibane, angelic-like beings with charcoal grey feathers and amnesia. They live in a moderately sized complex named ‘Old Home’, a fairly run down complex on the outskirts of... See full review

Pupipo!

Oct 7, 2016

Pupipo! an anime about a girl, Himeji Wakaba, with the ability to see ghosts and a little pink ball character (Pupipo), that I had named Kirby for no particular reason. As short form series go, this one was actually pretty good. The story it had would have worked as a show of regular length. Most of the series is quite easy going, with some of the overarching story sprinkled in here and there, mostly when regarding to Kirby, the titular character. The final few episodes is where the story kicks into top gear which can be a turn off for those that just wanted a laid back comedy, however I... See full review

Shirobako

Sep 1, 2016

I started this up after having seen all the praise it had been getting. Shirobako did not disappoint, not at all. A superb show, I enjoyed every last minute of it. In my eyes it was practically flawless. Be warned that I may go over minor spoilers in this review. If you want to avoid any of those skip ahead to the ol' conclusion at the bottom there. Story and Characters We are treated to two arcs, both very strong. In our first arc, the Musashino studio has just aired the first episode of their director's new original creation Exodus. With Miyamori as the protagonist, we see how the studio... See full review

ERASED

Mar 28, 2016

Hype, hype and more hype. This show got hyped up to heaven and back, something which achieved it the huge popularity it garnered during the 2016 winter, however at the same time it was unable to live up to that hype for many. Now in my case I came into this show without knowing a single thing about it, other than "oh that is a nice looking poster, I like those tags too". It was only when I got a few episodes in that I noticed it had gotten to #1 on the site (it since has lost this spot).  Does ERASED deserve #1? Well I can only speak my own opinion and personally I think it doesn't, if... See full review

KonoSuba – God's blessing on this wonderful world!

Mar 22, 2016

I decided to pick this up a couple of weeks into the 2016 winter season, and I can tell you that I do not regret my decision to watch in the slightest. KonoSuba is definitely one of my top 2016 anime and probably one of the best anime comedies I have had the pleasure of watching. Anyway enough nonsense, let's get into the review. The Story and Characters The setting is that of a fantasy world, specifically a town that would normally be considered a 'starter town' in an MMORPG game. Our main character, Kazuma, is reincarnated in this world after he dies in the real world in ridiculous fashion. He... See full review

Food Wars! Shokugeki no Souma

Dec 20, 2015

Fun show all in all, I definitely enjoyed this one despite some things I personally did not like. I am likely going to include spoilers so skip to the conclusion at the end if you have not seen this show yet. Story  The story revolves around a group of characters from the Toutuski Culinary Academy, mainly protagonist Souma Yukihira and Megumi Tadokoro with Erina Nakiri as an antagonist of sorts. It's split into 3 arcs, the introduction, the training camp and the Autumn Elections. The introduction did a good job of setting the story and introducing us to most of the characters. I did find it a... See full review

Angel Beats!

Dec 8, 2015

I was impressed by this show, something that isn't very hard to do granted, but still that's something. Oh and there's going to be some minor spoilers so if you don't want to be spoiled skip to the end. Story It's set in a high school in a world after death, inhabited mostly by 'NPC' students and teachers among them those that have passed on, as well as the world’s guardian Tenshi. The story focuses on a group of high school students in a group called the Shinda Sekai Sensen or SSS for short, a group that is in a fight against God. They comprise of people who have not fulfilled what they wanted to... See full review
