Best anime series!

These are all the shows I gave 4.5 or 5 stars to. Originally this was just a 5 star list but a lot of my 4.5 rated anime deserve to be here too. These are in watched order (ordered to the best my memory allowed).
1 Kill La Kill

Kill La Kill

Kill la Kill is the show that got me watching anime. I loved everything about it from the characters to the animation and art style.

Even ignoring the fact that this show was relatively low budget, I think that the show is among some of the most unique in its art style. I also loved its animation, which while simplistic at times, just looks great and works really well.

The cast of characters is also brilliant, with Ryuuko Matoi and Satsuki Kiryuuin standing at the top, both of which rank highly as some of my favourite characters in anything, especially Ryuuko.

One of the shows I value highest.

2 No Game No Life

No Game No Life

A wonderfully colourful and vibrant world where people use games to solve everything.

There was practically nothing I disliked about the show. The characters where great (even the 'annoying' one) and I the world it had set up pretty interesting.

Oh there is one thing I had an issue with. Cliffhanger ending with no series 2 looking likely >:(

3 Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

This show was amongst some of the first anime I watched back in 2014. I remember being throughly gripped by this sho throughout its entire run, but what this series has over the second is that it was more consistent. The second gets bogged down with some weird ideas (although it is ultimately saved by a great ending).

I really enjoyed the main character, as much of a bastard he could be. He was certainly very capable with the power he had at his disposal, but he also had some limitations on its use stopping it from being too over powered.

4 The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

Very funny show with a love triangle I wasn't annoyed by. The main cast of characters were all a joy and when the drama hit I felt invested in how the outcome would come about.

The main character's struggles to accept that other's can just be great at things whilst he has to work hard is one of the common occurances in the show and I enjoyed watching how he dealt with these problems.

5 Toradora!

Toradora!

A great romcom that never felt slow for me. Kept me interested from start to finish. The romantic interests are obvious to guess, not much is left to the imagination however the important thing here was the journey the characters go through and the experiences they have, although one character does kind of get the short end of the stick.

The ending is not the happiest but it was still satisfying, as long as you remember that there can be epilogues after the credits.

6 FLCL

FLCL

Made by a lot of the staff that made Kill la Kill, FLCL is another crazy show with amazing visuals and mad antics that I just found myself being fully entertained throughout.

It's pretty short with only 6 episodes but each episode was a fantastic marvel for me.

The main character Haruhara Haruko was excellent in how she did things. She was a very eccentric character and I feel she worked perfectly, with her personality contrasting the rather ordinary town she was in.

7 Watamote: No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!

Watamote: No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!

A rather cringe inducing show, WataMote stars a very awkward girl who suffers from extreme social anxiety.

There is a good reason I loved this show as much as I did. Tomoko goes through school life wanting to be popular, resenting those that are. This struck a chord with me, I have had my own issues at school in this regard, although of course not as extreme. I sympathised with her behaviour which might be seen as mean spirited by some, but I see it as just jealousy and as a single form of being able to cope with the fact that she just cannot interact with others without enormous amounts of effort.

This show ain't for everyone but it's certainly one of my personal favourites.

8 K-On!

K-On!

A cute girls doing cute things anime, but not just aimless fun. The characters, great characters I should add, have something to strive towards.

Definitely the definition of a school life show, but it was one that was always a lot of fun, didn't drag on or outstay its welcome. The characters do have goals and they do take steps to get closer, all the whilst messing about.

It has a nice, little OP too.

A Certain Scientific Railgun S

Quite different to the first season, this a lot lighter on the slice of life elements, until the final arc, and follows Mikoto Misaka for most of the series, where previous main characters are a lot less prominant here.

While I really liked the first series, I have to say that this one better. Mikoto is a great MC as far as I am concerned so a series focusing on her was always going to do well.

I also liked how it ended, with the full cast involved even if the final arc was a little unimportant when compared to the arc before it.

12 Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate was a real emotional ride. A slow start, with some nice character building followed a sudden switch that completely changed its inital impression.

I had a fantastic time with this show, watching several episodes at a time, each one leaving that feeling of wanting more.

Time travel can be a difficult thing to do right but Steins;Gate, in my eyes, nails it perfectly.

14 Yuru Yuri ♪♪

Yuru Yuri ♪♪

Yuru Yuri is as Slice of Life-y as they come, and I love it. Not all that much happens in the way of story but I was entertained by the cast of characters and how fun it was to watch them just do stuff.

Really easy to just wind down and enjoy some Yuru Yuri without having to worry about thinking about what you are watching.

Funny show with light shoujo-ai.

15 Lucky Star

Lucky Star

No plot to be seen. Not much story either. But Lucky Star was just funny. It did not need a plot, it was just purely for fun, watching the characters mess about. The art style is great too, rather unique.

At first it was a little strange trying to get used to the way this show was structured but it did not take me long to get into it.

Those live action EDs later on with Shiraishi were great.

10/10

16 One-Punch Man

One-Punch Man

One-Punch Man was great. Lots of action with a totally deadpan mc made for a great action-comedy. The best parts for me was the complete seriousness of all the other characters, as if they were in your normal action superpower series and then, we have Saitama who is literally a hero for fun, a total unkown just smashing opponents with a single hit, whilst never realising the seriousness of any situation.

17 Yuru Yuri San☆Hai!

Yuru Yuri San☆Hai!

Similar reasons as the season before it. I actually really liked the new art style used too. The old art style certainly had its charm too but there was something about what the new studio did that I actually really liked. The characters still look the same just with some finer details.

More silly Yuru Yuri antics.

School-Live!

I cannot praise this show enough. From start to finish it was a fantastic watch. Half way through I was so heavily invested that I could not stop watching until the end. It's been some time since a show grabbed hold of me this much.

That's all I am willing to say, Gakkou Gurashi is a show where the less you know about going in, the more you will get out of it.

While I might not agree 100% with this list (more like 79%), this is still a damn good one. I've tried almost every single one of those anime and all of them are worth giving a shot.

Even several of my 10/10 are in here, which is quite surprising.

Awesome top 9 list, bro! Haven't watched any of those yet, but have read FLCL manga before.
