If Her Flag Breaks

Jan 26, 2024

This story succeeds at the one thing it most needs to succeed at... pull at your emotions. The basic storyline gets confusing in multiple directions. First, you have hidden connections like a father who is actually a grandfather, a brother who is actually a father, a stranger who is actually a brother, etc. Second, you have multiple false storylines wrapped into the real storyline. Third, you have an observer who may or may not be manipulating events and that manipulation, if it is happening, may be good or evil or maybe even neutral. However, the characters build up the story and their interactions create... See full review

801 T.T.S. Airbats

Jul 25, 2023

I really looked forward to watching this and was very quickly disappointed. The story is about an all-female version of Japan's Blue Impulse Aerial Demonstration team. Actually, the story is about the love triangle with the flying in the background. First off, the love triangle is very contrived. There appears to be no basis for it other than "insert love triangle type C here." The protagonist shows up, has embarrassing encounters with members of the love triangle, then forgive him with and start the actual love triangle. Forgiveness is reasonable but it is rushed in this story with only a short... See full review

Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?

Jul 16, 2023

Disturbing is the primary adjective I would give for this series. I can't say there is any one character whom I truly hate but there is only one character who isn't annoying beyond belief. Porta is the only non-annoying character and her job is carrying all the gear (Porta - Porter, not exactly clever) but she is also a craftsman so why can't the writers give her any crafting assignments, especially when one (repairing the guild house) is SPECIFICALLY STATED! The protagonist is annoying because he wants to get out from under his mother's wing but just keeps whining about how they are always saved by her... See full review

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Jul 12, 2023

I found this to be a surprisingly good anime. Its chief downside is that it is rather formulaic and the ending was at least mostly predictable. However, despite the fact this storyline has been done so very many times before, its execution was presented as fresh. For the 1st 3 episodes, it was honestly hard to say who the protagonist actually was. It has a Mature rating for violence and there is certainly a lot of it. The hero(es) aren't trying to apprehend the offender to present them for justice but are applying Justice, swift and sure, then and there. A lot of innocent victims die but the story makes it... The Pilot's Love Song

Jul 6, 2023

Okay, a key component of successful fiction is the suspension of disbelief and even assuming the presence of magic (which was never confirmed or denied in this series but they did have flying islands), this series stretches that suspension so far beyond the breaking point, even the Hindenburg didn't burn this badly.  First off, their aircrew communicated through the use of speaking tubes, not intercoms. Okay, maybe their level of technology is only equivalent to World War I. That is actually borne out by the use of bolt action rifles fired from an observer position which was actually tried in World... See full review

Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere

Jun 15, 2023

Never have I watched an entire anime series and read the Wikipedia entry and known LESS about what is going on!?!?!?!? This is MASTERFULLY CONFUSING!!! That isn't a compliment. There is a story in here and it might even be a great one but damned if I can find it. The only thing I can truly appreciate about this anime is the very ending where the protagonist says, "Huh?" No matter what genre you are into, it's in here and that is a major part of the problem. The show suffers fatally from Attention Deficit Disorder. The characters are each unique and adequate time is given so most of their... See full review

Kandagawa Jet Girls OVA

Jun 15, 2023

The single redeeming value of the series was the nudity and this has blocked that despite ample opportunity for it. The only reason I didn't rate it a 1 was that it didn't cross that threshold of truly offensively bad. This doesn't have any drug abuse, violence or other abuse. At worst, this is offensively sweet with no real conflict except that impose by men. The only thing that is truly bad in this story is the continued hostility towards the male gender. The only male part in this is the racing board who reject the girls video, thereby once again playing the faceless bad guys.

Kandagawa Jet Girls

Jun 7, 2023

Of all the anime I have watched, this was definitely one of them. Yeah. This anime seems to have some not so hidden hostility against men. Only 2 men even get a speaking role in this. One is an aristocrat who gives the arrogant snob point of view and he is the ONLY speaking male who actually gets a clearly seen face. Rin's father is the other one but he is only ever shown from the back or in shadow as if to minimize any worthwhile participation of any male. "HiDive" lists one of the genre's as LGBT which is not blatant and seems frankly left ambiguous to reduce controversy. The one redeeming... See full review

Armed Girl’s Machiavellism

Mar 6, 2023

This wasn't a bad anime but there really wasn't anything that truly stood out. It tended to have many of the stereotypical anime trends. Overpowered main character? Check! Tsundere girlfriends? Check! Physical violence for dominance/affection? Check! Bath episode? Check! Dominance of swords? Check! The climax actually lowered my opinion of the anime slightly, not because it was bad but because there was literally nothing unexpected. Execution was well done but it just didn't do anything different than most other anime. There were surprises but they were all minor and tertiary to the main plot. This was... See full review

Spriggan (2022)

Mar 3, 2023

This wasn't particularly bad but so much of it has been done before. You have your stereotypical OP protagonist who is fighting for the good guys and he faces a number of challenges which he must achieve or the world is doomed. The individual challenges are new and clever but while the fighting animation is really quite good, there is next to no character development. The characters are as 2-dimensional as their art form. One episode has Nazis as the bad guys (because it's okay to hate Nazis as they spent 12 years trying to prove there was no one more evil although the Communists did give it a good try. The... Girls' Frontline

Feb 3, 2023

I found this to be a very likeable innovative story well executed. I liked the characters and the comeraderie they built up. Since I liked most of the story, I am actually going to focus more on where this show could use some improvements. The first is sound. The focus is on the AR team, so called because each is carrying a primary firearm in the AR-15/M-16 class. This firearm has a distinctive spring sound, derived from the buffer spring inside the buffer tube of the butt stock. Just like the distinctive sound of the AK-47, the AR's all have this distinctive spring sound each time the action cycles. It... See full review

Tenchi Universe

Feb 2, 2023

This is a perfect example of why I didn't care for Anime in the 90's. Spoilers to follow: There actually was a decent enough story but the episodic nature of the series meant that no immediate problems lasted longer than the episode. Yes, there was an arc which covered the whole last half of the series but problems like breaking down in space with no food are irrelevant by the end of the episode, even though the only food added was a single apple. When Ryoko wastes all the crew's money enjoying herself on a wild vacation while all the rest are starving, there is no repercussion. She was willing to let them... See full review

Dies irae: To the Ring Reincarnation

Jan 27, 2023

This is what you get when you let form take over from substance. The whole story, starting with the previous season is extremely confusing, especially when characters turn out to be planted by the opposing side and good guys are bad and bad guys are good and good guys to bad to try to do good but fail and become bad guys and work as a mole within the bad guy network and still fail at any kind of redemption and what the hell am I even talking about?!?!?!?!!?!?!? Yeah, that's what it's like. I love the animation. It is very impressive when German fighter planes show up but it is even more impressive when you... See full review

Koi Koi Seven

Jan 4, 2023

This was a decent series up until the last episode when it went completely off the rails. I admit it caught my interest because of the alleged fan service and that portion does not disappoint. However, even the fan service often seemed inappropriate to the story or odd camera angles were chosen purely to add more panty shots (there were plenty). It had good character development and appeared to be leading up to an intense climax where all the questions would be answered. Instead, it collapsed into more of the same but with no transition to explain how everything up to this point reversed in such a... See full review

Bakemonogatari

Dec 24, 2022

There is much to like and to dislike about Bekemogatari but, trying to sum it up in one phrase, I would have to say Attention Deficit Disorder. The animation is apparently meant to be artsy but it is hard to track because the longest scenes don't last more than 15 seconds and there are several times per episode where you have 3 scenes per second, too fast to track on any meaning behind them. Many of these very quick scenes are written word and I had to back up and pause several times to get an idea of just what was written because it happened too fast to read. Further many of these brief written scenes... See full review

The World God Only Knows: Goddesses Arc

Nov 5, 2022

I started watching the first 2 seasons and considered them rather lackluster but this 3rd season was a come-from-behind win beyond all reason. I am glad I watched the first 2 seasons because they were a necessary precursor to this FANTASTIC 3rd season! The main character had no redeeming qualities in the first two seasons but he became emotionally involved and committed once the stakes were raised. You might think the stakes were high enough when his own life was on the line but his commitment to a greater goal comes out when others lives are at risk and then, even the Earth itself is at risk. Princess Lover! Picture Drama

Aug 26, 2022

I really enjoyed "Princess Lover!" and so I had high hopes for this picture drama. Unfortunately, they were all mercilessly crushed under steel wheels and then lit on fire. Everything good about this was already established in the anime. This was nothing but a worthless tease. The most animation was when two characters would fight but it was as if 2 cardboard cutouts were being banged against one another. There were a few stills of nudity not included in the series but only a prepubescent virgin could really get excited over these pictures, most of which were actually in the series credits so very... Popotan

Jul 25, 2022

Okay, first off, not gonna lie, I selected this story because it was tagged for nudity. That being said, this is one of the very few stories I have ever watched that could not be saved with bare female breasts. For most of the series, you don't really know what is going on because the characters themselves don't seem to know what is going on. They know they are searching for this one female who will apparently give them all their answers but (spoiler alert) no answers are forthcoming when they finally meet the subject of their quest. Further, the ending reveals that the subject of the quest is the quest... See full review

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs

May 5, 2022

This anime is a happy and joyful experience ruined by censorship. Let's face facts: Ecchi is the reason for this particular anime and ecchi is blocked thoughout this series. It's like watching a basketball game where all the lights go out whenever the ball is within 3 feet of the goal. I do understand many folks may not want to see that sort of thing and that is fine for most anime but not when it is the primary plot device. Rating for animation? What kind of rating do you give for obscuring lense flares, excessive bathroom steam or blocking objects? Maybe my rating is a little harsh for sound because you... See full review

Schwarzesmarken

May 1, 2022

This is a very good anime but I can't say it was an enjoyable one. It does one of the best depictions of the gloom and doom of the Cold War, especially the fear, hatred and silence of the Stasi. As such, I find this an important and worthwhile anime as very few focus on that time frame and fewer still include much of that gloom and doom as it is very difficult to get through. There are so many happier, funnier, more romantic, more ecchi, more heroic stories out there, it is almost a battle to get through this one. However, it is a slow boil and when it reaches its climax, you are very satisfied you plunged... See full review

Plastic Memories

Mar 18, 2022

This was one of the most outstanding anime series I have ever seen but, fair warninging, it can trigger some serious emotions. I saw this at a time when I feared I might lose my wife to cancer and/or nephrotic syndrome. The thought of losing her was devastating but this anime helped me deal with all those feelings of impending loss. It taught me to treasure the time we have together while we still have it. As much as I loved it, I never shared it with my wife because it could trigger some very negative emotions. If you are not deeply emotionally effected by watching this anime, you are as cold-blooded as... See full review

Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki OVA

Mar 12, 2022

I can't say anything directly bad about these 2 OVA episodes. They were worthwhile episodes to the story told in season 1. However, their storyline was just kind of blah. The 12 episodes of season 1 had me on the edge of my seat but these 2 seemed like filler. That isn't right for an OVA. These extras should ramp up the interest to inspire the next season. Instead, they seem to kind of wrap things up. Neither of these 2 were actually bad but they just don't compare to the energy of season 1.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Feb 18, 2022

The story wasn't bad but the character development was lacking and I found out why. There are 2 seasons of anime before this OVA. They didn't develop the characters because that was all done 2 seasons prior. Unfortunately, as desperately as I tried, I couldn't find any of the previous seasons so it really makes the story rather 1 dimensional because they just dive into the action with noobs like me wondering why and what's their motivation. I'm watching 2-dimensional characters and wondering if they are really 1 and 1/2. The story isn't bad but it falls flat because the characters are alien to anyone not... See full review

Really not sure exactly how to rate this show. I gave it a rather midling rating because it seems split into 2 shows running concurrently, the character development story and the monster-fighting story. The character story is honestly tense and tender, hot and cold, action and dialogue and, most of all, the driving force making this story worth watching. Unfortunately, it keeps getting interrupted by these monster-fighting commercials posing as stories. I'm not against stories about giant fighting robots although I do feel most of them seem to be poorly handled and catering to the 6-year-old audience. There... See full review

We, Without Wings - Under the Innocent Sky

Jan 1, 2022

This was a confusing show in many respects. It really seemed disjointed for the first few episodes. Once the big reveal happened around episode 4 or 5, it streamlined the disjointed into some kind of continuity. It's actually hard to do a review of this without spoilers but I will do my best. Suffice it to say a major illness is involved. That being said, it's hard to identify exactly what did and did not actually happen. This show is tagged for fan service and explicit sex but the vast bulk of fan service ended with the big reveal except for a single scene of explicit sex (no penetration). I can't say I... Dec 20, 2021

I loved this anime! First off, I selected it for the fan service and was slightly disappointed in the lack of direct visual fan service but it more than makes up for it in comedy and innuendo. Second, having been born and raised on a farm, I liked and related to the farm setting, especially the escaping bull. I empathized with the protagonist as he hated and resented the farm for taking away his family but he learned to love it. I also loved the unexpected humor. Some jokes are obvious but the 40-year old schoolteacher so desperate for a man she is offering herself to her students in a comical, not... See full review

Wanna be the Strongest in the World

Dec 17, 2021

I'll admit it. I started watching this one for the fan service. Yes, it has fan service but it is restricted to the showers after workouts or competitions. There really isn't much titillation as the shower scenes are always the business of getting clean, no carressing or other types of excitement. So I looked to the story. I am generally not a fan of sports shows and I absolutely detest professional wrestling. That being said, you can really feel the pain and disillusionment as the protaganist struggles in the first several episodes. It's so depressing it is hard to get through the 1st 6 episodes. Maken-ki! Specials

Nov 24, 2021

I really liked Maken-ki! This set of specials? Not so much. The only reason for the high rating for the characters is they have already been established in the original series. The low rating for these specials is almost entirely to the low-grade animation. They are a series of exercise videos with lots of fan service but the quality of the images is poor. Most of the time, their mouths don't even move when they are talking. In some instances straight bones seem to curve and, even worse since it is an exercise video, it is mostly a bunch of repetition so they don't even need to draw many animation panels... Oct 10, 2021

This was a very good series with excellent character development and fascinating plot development hampered with a bad ending. The characters are well depicted and the viewer can easily be drawn in with their comraderie, humor and intensity. The story is full of interesting situations and locations. However, the real plot isn't revealed until the end of the 3rd to last episode of the 2nd season. This plot has an incredibly huge plot hole which completely fails to understand the concepts involved with basic aviation which turns out to be key to the "evil villain's" grand scheme. Conception

Sep 25, 2021

The actual story isn't bad. However there are several detractors which pull interest away from the story. First example: this story is titled "Conception" and it is about a hero "isekaied" into another world where he must fight multiple Impurities in the dungeon. However, he is not strong enough and must father "star children" to aid him in battle. The more star children, the larger his army and better his success. However, aside from risking mere children in battle (which isn't really a risk because any real danger and they are cacooned in a secure shell) there is the strange... See full review
