Nagi no Asukara is a perfect example of a well written, and good developed anime, both in drama, fantasy and romance. Nagi no Asukara knows how to represent their characters and develop them from poorly written looking characters to stronger and likable ones, but as far as the romance goes it's focused on romance, unlike many animes where people only fall in love with the one with the biggest boobs and the cutest hairstyle, Nagi no Asukara isn't ashamed of touch the subject of falling in love with someone emotionally, not being able to let go, even if the world around them changes. But, if you're NOT a fan of love triangles and such, this series must be a bit lacking for you, though the excellently executed drama and the character development still can be a reason for you to enjoy it, give it a try.
Kokoro Connect looks like a very typical and cliché show to begin with, but you'll notice that the series is everything but that, especially with the little, subtle twists in the story and in developement that makes it such a blast to watch and different from others. Not only does the story have something twisted, the romance on the other hand also has something that you barely see and I am extremely happy that in a love triangle they took a certain road most of the animes ignore. Just give it a try, it'll be worth watching, you can blame me.
Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai is - without even arguing - the best harem that is out there during to the fact that it has an interesting story, interesting characters even though most of them are based of stereotypes in anime, but most of all they don't need to kick in useless and annoying drama and just stick to the story and the characters, the show is strong enough to be based on that and not on useless fanservice and ignorance. If you like to see the main character - who is actually interesting and both funny - having more routes than just one and having romantical relationships - which all most of them are one sided but never mind that - than you should watch Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai. Besides that, it's not cliché, or it's making fun of cliché's because the main character is obsessed with eroges.
Kimi ni Todoke may be an shoujo, and perfectly follows the clichés in literary every shoujo, I can't help but love the show for it's romance. I personally have a thing for slow shows, and Kimi ni Todoke is very slow, even for an shoujo anime. Why is it so high on the list and what's so good and different about it? Kimi ni Todoke is really, truly focused on the romance part. Unlike some other series in the list, Kimi ni Todoke is filled with romance and it's basically the main thing in the whole series. Other than that it's cute and the drama is not tóó heavy, no extremely depressing backstory's and sudden deaths, just lighthearted.
Baka to Test is one of the funniest anime's I've personally watched, but on the other side on of the romances is actually handled really well, even for an comedy anime that at first sight had a pretty obvious "main interest", it actually is more complex and they actually give the loser development and show that there is maybe a chance for even this character. It's not trying to make it too cliché, even though it seemed like that at first sight. Next to that, the friend of the main character actually isn't an pervert and idiotic, the main character isn't the only boy on the planet and not all the girls want his dick, since the friend I mentioned also has someone who is interested in him, in an absolute idiotic way. I think, that everybody who has at least a slight interest in anime can enjoy this anime, with or without the romance.
What can you say about Shigatsu? There isn't much to say about it, especially if you don't want any spoilers in here, but with this show is that it handles the romance very subtle, and actually shows how dynamic a relationship can be between two persons, how it can help them through big problems and how love can make two people stronger. It also has a little bit of a love triangle, or at least you can say a "confusion" and that's about it. The main reason why you must watch this show is because of the fact that this anime isn't leaking any romance, the only turn off maybe that there will never, ever be a relationship between the two main characters. If you mainly want those series, you might be disappointed. No kiss, no hug or something, sorry for that.
Even though Clannad has multiple genres that it plays off very well, one very important genre - especially that leads up to some drama in the second season Clannad After Story - is done very well what makes certain events stand out even more. The romance is Clannad is - in my opinion - pretty well handled. Even though I honestly dislike Nagisa, I still think that they pulled off the relationship between her and Tomoya really well and I felt a genuine bond between them. I've seen very few anime pull romance off like this, especially when it comes to keeping a romantic relationship interesting while it all being exploit.
Cross Game just has a small amount of romance in it, but for me it really makes the difference because of the fact how the romance is handled in this anime. Romance - in my opinion - should be handled through character growth and development and that's exactly what this series does. It handles it's romance very realistically and even though it takes some time, that means it doesn't feel rushed and in the end it leaves you satisfied with the outcome. Romance? Double check, but this series is a masterpiece so you should watch it for more than just one reason.
The main fact that this anime is in this list is because; yes, it has romance, but it's more of a comedy otherwise I would've put it on number one because it's definitely one of the best romance comedies for me. Just the issue is that this series is not going anywhere with it's romance, but that's kind of the "joke". Still it has some seriously shippable and hilarious combinations of characters and there are some moments that will melt your heart, even though you need to accept that the series will not get anywhere with it's romance. Still.. If you like comedies, and maybe even parodies, this anime is hilarious and it does have it's romantic scenes.
It's odd that this anime is very underrated and just a few people have heard about it, because whatever you say this is one of my guilty pleasures when it comes to romances. This story is not only full of drama and despair, but it also teaches a lot of lessons and has some very interesting elements that for me make this anime more realistic. The character interractions are very well done some of the issues the characters are dealing with come of as kind of understandable, even if it's not always sunshine. Definitely check this out if you like drama, want to bawl your eyes out but still be very completed by it's romance.
Next anime is also a very underrated anime I've seen quite a while ago, but still has me talking. The plot is fairly interesting, but also the characters had me very hooked. What made this stand out for me in romance though was how this anime wasn't trying to give it the cliché touch of "nothing is moving forward" and kind of got solutions to the romance instead of throwing in some misunderstandings and painfully cliché "comedy" to make the romance go nowhere. The only little bit of critique for me is; the sister character. I really didn't care about her whatever bond with her brother.
Also a great and rather slow yet very well directed anime that I've watched a while ago. From what I remember I found the bond between the main characters fairly interesting and when I am able to root for characters, it's normally a good thing. I didn't however expect they would get anywhere with it's romance, but it certainly did, what really took me by surprise. I also need to mention the fact that this anime has loads and loads of great elements that probably everyone can enjoy.
Also for this anime, highly had any expectations especially when it came to the romance. When this anime aired, I remember it not even having a romance tag in it and I only watched it because I heard it was going to be a tear jerker. It certainly was, but I didn't expect the romance to develop so well and this is one of those series - just like Clannad After Story - that the couple gets together somewhere in the anime, and it's not left unsolved or somewhat a weak confession near the end. The way they handled their last days together was very sweet and I was rooting for them from begin to end, very well made anime.
I am a huge fan of the manga, I just say, but this adoptation was very nice too and I really liked how they portayed it's characters. The anime is very non-cliché at some points, just like the characters being aware of their love very soon and not beat around the bushes. It also has very likable side characters what is always a plus point for me, although I'd like to see them a bit more flashed out, especially since I've read the manga and I liked the side stories and side romances. You might want to give the manga a shot once you've finished the anime.
True Tears is exactly the romance that I've been looking for for ages. It handles it's themes not only well, but also realistically, it has very relatable and multi-dimensional characters and even though the end wasn't very satisfying for me and most of the people, they did handle the romance very well. Another thing that - for me - was very interesting about this anime, was the fact that the best friend of our main character also was in a relationship, and I liked to see their story and chemestry together, it was a very nice perk.
Nodame Cantabile is an excellent anime and is probably one of my favorites when it comes to how they've handled the romance. This series is very aware how to base of romance not due to physical attraction, but mainly through respect and just a genuine bond. The romance is rather slow with progression, but in the end it's very satisfying. I also need to mention that - when I am talking about all the seasons - the side romances were very, very interesting and shippable and I had a blast also rooting for those. This anime is definitely a must watch for hardcore romance lovers, but also if you like classical music because it's heavily focussed on that.
For me, this anime still holds a special place in my heart because this was one of the first anime when I decided to start watching seasonally, and I saw this without any hype around it whatsoever. I didn't know what to expect, but the outcome was very pleasing because it made for an appealing, cute and touching story about friends and memories, with a calming atmosphere but great character development and hints of romance. I can't recommend this anime enough for people who really need something sweet and I definitely think it's highly underrated. So, if you don't know this one, make sure to check it out of mild romance but overall a nice experience.
This anime truly blew my expectations, especially in the romance part. I have to say, this is an anime more enjoyable for someone who likes drama and likes to finally see a not one sided love triangle. This anime perfectly knows to give both characters in the love triangle the change instead of pushing one extremely and leaving the other in the background. It also tackles a lot of very interesting themes and ofcourse if you're interested in music this anime can be quite enjoyable. I think that I can gladly say that this anime finally knew how to handle it's love triangle and I hope it'll be done like this in more animes, it's quite a fair experience. However, this anime has a lot of drama, so if you're not fond of that I suggest you watch something otherwise.
This anime definitely seems like an overdone example of the "echii harem action" types of series, but don't let it fool you; or well.. It is pretty average when it comes to story and is nothing special in that way but this is a romance list, and on the romance part this anime did something that is very unique in this genre and that does make me praise it in this list. Because, this anime actually has a couple in it, the main pair gets together somewhere in the beginning and their relationship gets developed as episodes pass. Unlike most echii harems where they beat around the bush and just tease it's audience for cheap laughs or fanservice, this anime comes clear to it and this makes it for me far more interesting, especially since there aren't even that much anime that have a couple in it at the beginning of the series, most of the time they also build it up to the climax and then troll you or make them officially. Need something refreshing? Check it out, it's worth your time.
I wanted to just briefly adress this anime because I feel like there has been talked alot about and in all honesty, I don't have to say a lot about it. This anime is just hilarious and has very structured, well handled romance. As far as I've seen my older/mid 2000's shoujo anime, I've always noticed how these most of the time are actually very good in their romance and have very likeable, developed characters and the same is with the romance. The concept is funny, the characters have great dynamic and overall this is just a must watch if you haven't seen it already, it has everything you're looking for in a romantic comedy, even it's drama is great.
If you finally want an anime where character kiss - don't know what fetish you have though - this anime has basically what you're looking for. Or well.. that did sound a bit odd, but this anime is also just not afraid to push some bottoms and overall has a lot of sweet moments. I also want to adress that besides from the very cute and overall well handled romance, I think the plot and idea of this anime is pretty cool and amazing and if you like it, body-swapping and such, this anime is literally a bless to watch. I do think that they have a few weak characters, but the amazing main characters make up for this so that's completely fine. Overall a great ride, I would say; try it out.
Another story where unlike the cliché, the main characters get together somewhere in the beginning instead of the whole beating around the bush process all over again, what - to be honest - I don't have that much of a problem with. Also another cliché they highly break is the fact that the main character isn't your beautiful bishounen, and also not a delinquent. This is a very unusual love story that also is very thoughtful and groundbreaking, featuring some amazing characters and also a very nice set up, beautiful animation. My only small complaint is that because the couple is together for most of the time in the anime, there are some episodes that feel very lack-luster because of the lack in progression, characterization and conflict. But besides that the anime also has some amazing scenes and episodes that make up for it.
Very underrated and should really get more recognizion, that's why it's so high on the list, and just because it's an enjoyable ride with very funny comedy, likeable characters and a hint of romance. Though romance isn't the main focus, it does get adressed lots of times and I think that makes it enough to briefly mention it on this list. This anime is about work, and has some more adult themes and jokes so this might also be more enjoyable for persons who are working themselves and can relate to this, also not very "teenager"-erishly working with the romantic themes, they handle it more on an adult way what is understandble when they're working with adult characters.
