Akame ga Kill!

Mar 28, 2022

I am going to start by saying that if you didn't enjoy the first episode, this anime is not for you. It is not for the faint of heart so don't be fooled by the bright colours. The show is gory, brutal, and sad, Madoka Magica style. If you cannot handle it, don't watch this anime.

:Spoilers Ahead:

That being said, the story is good. It is a fairly simple plot of take down the bad people who run the empire because they are evil and we could do it better. There is no filler or fan service episodes that take away from the main plot, and the plot itself flows well and isn't slow. There is a small bit of fan service but not enough to distract from the story. The characters also do not have plot armour and they die, no tricks or "wah ha hey I'm actually alive" kind of bs. They die and if you get attatched to characters easily, it is sad. I have not read the manga but I know that the story of the anime strays from the manga so if you want to know how, go read it.

The animation was clean and expressed a lot of emotion. The fight scenes were detailed enough to be entertaining (unlike shows like SAO) but not so detailed that it is hard to follow. There are some points during the combat when a gun rapidly fires or lightning strikes where the screen is just too bright and flashing a lot however. The lighting and the scene setting adds to the atmosphere well, especially for the eerie sections of the show. I also personally like the way that the animation shows extreme emotions such as anger.

The sound design is impressive, with the music setting the scene and keeping you on the edge. The ambiences were incredible and really place you in the scene. The sound effects were great, and they matched the ambiences. I did not watch the dub so I cannot say anything about the English VA, but the Japanese is good. There are a few characters that are lacking, but all of the main characters have a great Va. The volume levels are great, and there is no EQ clash.

The characters were probably the weakest part of the show, fairly generic with the exception of a couple of characters. It is the first show that I have seen wasnt a Boy Love with an openly gay character which was pretty cool, and the origin story for Esdeath was pretty unique. However the main protagonist and the MC were generic. The country bumpkin who gets strong to save his village, and the orphan who gets sold as a slave, trained into a warrior and made to fight, lack in originality. The visual designs of the characters worked well with their personalities and the use of a lot of bright colours, especially with Mine and Sheele is a nice contrast to the violence and brutality of the show.

Overall, I would recommend watching the first episode and if it is too much for you, stop. It is a tough show. But if you are on that line of do I don't I, I would say stick with it. It will leave you feeling content afterwards.

8.5/10 story
7.5/10 animation
9/10 sound
6/10 characters
8.5/10 overall
