Studio Gibli films, like Howl's Moving Castle, are what got me into anime along with the anime and manga called Fruits Basket. It helped that I found that Howl's Moving Castle was also based off of a previous work, the first book in the Howl's Moving Castle trilogy by Dyanne Waynne Jones.

For those looking at how I rate anime-- It might not be all that accurate. It depends on how I'm feeling after watching it and then how I feel looking back at it, making it subject to change. I do not know how much everyone puts stock in people's individual ratings, but for mine... If the anime has below a 3.5 rating, it likely is not going to change in rating and people might do best not to watch things below that rating anyway.

Finished watching 100 anime 1/2/2018! Yay! I've watched many more than this, but not completed them... Time to work towards 200 anime completed!

Salutations  again,

(Note to self: stop giving good examples of bad anime to other people)

Just to drop off a little warning here, the anime I mentioned are just the ones that popped into my head from recent memory for the sake of comparison. Urusei Yatsura is still the best example of poking fun at the harem genre, a lot of people claim it was the show that invented most of the modern harem tropes! Freezing is kind of like Sekirei, but is set in school setting with a big cone of dystopia on top of it. Hyakka Ryouran is also like Sekirei, very stylish graphics btw, but it is set in pseudo-modern Japan and has  techno wizardry meets magic vide going for it. I cannot vouch for the latest iterations because it went downhill fast starting from season 2, the first one is pretty good though and can be viewed as a standalone series.

As for Seikon no Qwaser... well you might rename it to 'perverted-fetish-collection-harem, the anime' with a VERY questionable premise. The second season was such a train wreck, that even it’s head-honchos decided to never continue it again. For what it is worth, I can guarantee that the series heavily satirizes shounen, ecchi and adult anime simultaneously, which I personally found to be both fascinating and off-putting at the same time.  I strongly advise against viewing it, especially the second season and most certainly plead to avoid the specials like the plaque.

Concerning the VN, LN and manga adaptations, they are quite tricky to translate into tv sized episodes. Visual Novels are rarely adapted well (good VN example: Steins;Gate – bad VN example: Chaos;Head) due to the budget not being high enough, because they can’t fit all of the story into 12 episodes (which is the usual seasonal anime runtime), inexperienced studio/staff for the job etc. It’s  often a combination of multiple factors.

Light novels and manga are easier to adapt, particularly the more ecchi/harem ones because the plot is trivial and the ‘plot’ is what people watch it for anyways. Well this also serves as a promotion for the original source material, so I guess that is a blessing of sorts, albeit a moot one.

Salutations,

Props for your  carefully thought-out and neatly presented opinion on Sekirei! It’s always a pleasure to read such posts. Honestly I had to unearth a few archives because things start to become monotone and drab after watching huge quantities of harem schlock after a while. Looking back at what I had said, perhaps my opinion was poorly worded at the time. Sekirei can, as you have pointed out, be considered a satire on the genre, albeit not a very good one indeed. Sadly this can be said pretty much about every harem anime, Urusei Yatsura, Freezing and Hyakka Rouran to name a few, granted you dig deep enough. (If I had to pick the most accurate representation of whole (raunchy) genre, I’d say that would be the original Seikon no Qwaser, partially because the MC is not a spineless wimp).

I’ve read the Sekirei manga fully and the original material does a better job conveying the genre commentary you have provided in your post, among some other things, than its anime adaptation. Unfortunately as this is usually the case with LN and VN adaptations to television script, I rarely mention this in my comments. The two are considered separate entities varying in their tones and themes, but most people tend not to understand that fact. The anime didn’t do that good of a job conveying its message thus resulting in my comment towards Quamp’s original review.

Just my two kisses on Minato’s cheek.

Hello :) I just created some anime challenge on my profile :) Maybe you wanna try? Let me know, see you later :)

RubyofRaven says...  That would be The Great Teacher Onizuka. It's a classic, I'm told and I'm enjoying it so far.  What about you?

I -still- haven't seen GTO yet, but I have read the manga!  I need to watch that one!

My most recent episode was from Wolf's Rain, which has been on my Want to Watch list for a very long time and I'm finally getting to see it.  Before that, I watched an episode of Fairy Tail, a very long anime that I'm watching for the first time to completion. I hear Wolf's Rain is gonna be sad, and I'm not looking forward to that, but so far, the animation's great.  I tried to watch Fairy Tail before but stalled out.  This time around, the story is more enjoyable and I'm gonna finish it.

RubyofRaven says...  Thanks! XD I'll keep that in mind! ;) I hope you have a good day, too!

I have an anime related question for you - what anime have you watched an episode from most recently?
