PSYCHO-PASS

Aug 15, 2014

I basicly made a review of the show while discussing it with another member, so Ill share my view with the rest of the community aswell.

Introduction

In the future the Sibyl system rules everyday life. It will pick you career based on what will make you the happiest but it can also predict which people are likely to commit crimes. The psycho-pass everyone has will change colour depending on their level of stress and evil thoughts/actions. Once it reaches a certain level they will be forced to undergo therapy to improve their Psycho-pass towards a normal level. Those who are passed the point of no return will be for locked away for life, only a few handfull of those get the chance to become Enforcers, the hunting 'dogs' of the police force with the task to obtain people with bad Psycho-pass levels or to excecute the people who commited to big crimes to be locked away for life.

Concept: The futuristic views/gadgets are very interesting, altough not entirely original (Minority Report/I-robot) but it is very nice to see. I especially liked the holographic rooms, made me feel everyone in the city has the identical dark square room while using holograms to personalise the walls, furniture, floor and everything else.

Pacing: Slow, especially the first few episodes I got bored a couple of times and started to do other things. The show does accelerate a little when the story develops and Makishime appears, but it still keeps a rather slow pacing. This is understandable as it is more of a detective show as an action show but it took till around episode 9 or 10 before the story started to develop and it finally got interesting, that is almost halfway the show...way to late!

Characters: Enjoyable, even the main villains, but I did have some issues with Akane, I disliked her from the start, I like (mentally) powerfull/strong main characters and that is not something she was. She does develop throughout the show, especially towards the end, where I finally started to like her.

Story: *Tries to avoid spoilers*, at first it just seem random murders but it will slowly connect with each other. The plottwist, around ep 16 with Makishima didnt come as a shock the next involving Akane around ep 18-19 however was very interesting and original. The ending, ep 22, was a little disapointing, I think it would have been more interesting/original if it went the other way around.

Animation: No complaints, very good.

Music: Not really noticeable except for the opening theme.

Extra point: humour: None except a single joke, but I like that, my anime must be 100% dark or 100% humour. It also fits the concept/story/theme of the show.

Overall:
It was a good and very interesting show, I liked it more because of the story as for the action. The biggest drawback on the show is its pace, it is slow, especially the first few episodes. So Ive given it 4/5 stars.

9/10 story
9.5/10 animation
7/10 sound
8.5/10 characters
8.3/10 overall
