These anime feature an organization of two or more people executing an unlawful or harmful secret plan. Conspiracies can be anything from large-scale government coverups to several people conspiring to make someone else's life miserable.

You win some, you lose some. Gambling is a strong focus in these anime, from casino adventures to backroom games. Characters often gamble day in and day out for a variety of stakes: money, fame, or in the case of High Stakes Games, even more sinister consequences.

Characters in these stories play a 'game' with serious consequences. Fame, fortune, power, life: any or all of these may be won or lost according to the rules of competition. The stakes and the rules may be agreed upon by parties involved, or imposed on them by an external force; either way, not following them will usually have severe consequences for the transgressor. Those who take part in the game will generally be forced to play until they win... or lose.

Characters in these anime are forced or choose to play in a special type of High Stakes Game: you play to win, or you die trying.

Seinen (青年), translated as "youth", is a demographic aimed at men from late teens to adulthood who understand kanji. Seinen manga rarely include furigana with kanji, and have a wide variety of topics and themes. Seinen is the counterpart of Josei, a demographic aimed at women.
