The Ones Within

Nov 29, 2022

The show’s name almost seems like a perfect precursor to what lies ahead, as you can ask “The ones within what?” just like you’d ask “where did the rest of the episodes go?” Story - 3/10 Unlike many of the other reviewers here, I haven’t seen any similar anime that deal with a game like this, outside of maybe High Rise Invasion. So my review and opinion will come from a fresh and unbiased view of the genre, and not how this show relates to others like it.     A group of popular game v-tubers are transported into the beta test of a brand new game that... Stars Align

Nov 3, 2022

I guess they aligned in a kind of crooked, wavy, line. Story - 6/10 This series took your typical school club show, and made things a bit different and more interesting. Unlike the usual “we only have two members and we need five for a club” plot that starts off thousands of other shows, this one starts with us learning the soft tennis club is such trash that if they don’t win any matches they’ll lose their funding and have to disband.  Thankfully a new transfer student has just arrived, and joy of joys he’s both athletic and has a connection to the team’s... Kono Oto Tomare! 2nd Season

Oct 23, 2022

The Trojan Anime, tricking you into thinking it was a mediocre slice of life show, when it was really an awful romance series, or some other terrible show that had nothing to do with a student koto club. Story - 3/10 This season it felt like the show was broken up into three different parts, most of which had little to do with the story we came to know from season one. The first few episodes of the show became a very bad, and cliche, high school romance show, where the time was almost all taken up by students being unable to confess their love, and instead pining from a distance; all while being worried... The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. - Reawakened

Oct 21, 2022

Well this time around they sure got the “Disaster” part right. Story - 3 /10 While the stories in previous seasons were random, they were at least pretty original, funny, and smart. This time around everything was just bad. Many of the stories were just awful retellings of jokes from past episodes, and they’d harp on the same little goof over and over in ways that showed they weren’t even trying. The worst part was none of it was even slightly humorous, which is amazing since past seasons were really laugh out loud funny.  I also get where they were going with the last... See full review

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III

Oct 18, 2022

Is it Wrong to just repeat the previous season, while adding nothing to the show? Story - 2/10 While this show isn’t NEW, it’s recent enough that I should warn of many many Spoilers Ahead! By now I shouldn’t be surprised that the season starts with a tale that involves a Half naked, prepubescent looking, girl spending most of her screen time hanging off Bell, though that seems to be commonplace in so many of these shows where the writer obviously sees themselves as the hero, and then squeaks in their borderline criminal fantasies without most people giving it a second... Kono Oto Tomare!

Aug 4, 2022

Meet the new anime, same as the old anime. Story - 3/10 So have you watched a slice of life show that revolves around a club? Then you probably know how this is going, just with a new activity. The koto club, an after school group that focuses around the playing of a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, is down to its last member, so if it doesn’t recruit people quickly it will be disbanded.  It doesn’t take long until the group is full though; by adding the transfer student with a bad rep, the child prodigy with self doubt issues, and the gang of goofballs for comedic... Durarara!! X2 The Second Arc

May 13, 2022

Even after twenty four episodes, this season seems to still not have any clue on where it wants to go or what the point of making a second season was, well besides a money grab.  Story - 4/10 The story picks up right as the last section left off, but unfortunately they decide not to do much when it came to building the drama and mystery, as we’re quickly given answers and resolutions that make the previous ending feel worthless and disrespectful to the viewer. On the main storyline front, of Mikado working with the blue squares, there’s pretty much more of the same, with the gang... See full review

Durarara!! X2

Apr 29, 2022

Where the first season had a cohesive randomness to everything, this season, or rather part of a season, is just all over the map, and with little reasoning as of yet. Story - 3/10 It’s a few months after the ending of the first season, and the strange happenings in Ikebukuro haven’t seemed to let up. Cops and civilians are still searching for the headless rider, odd murders are happening all around town, and the local gangs are back to their violent ways. Unfortunately, unlike in season one, none of these interesting plot points seem to go any where, with each just there to support a lot... See full review

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II

Jan 4, 2022

Is it wrong to make a show that pretends to be a fantasy, dungeon crawling series, but instead put out pseudo-porn aimed at kids? Yes, the answer is yes a million times. Story - 2/10 So obviously the show needs to take a turn from the original series, because how much monster battling can you really do in a TV show where it isn’t the same thing over and over? They started this season off by leading you to believe the major story is going to be that of a guild war between Hestia’s family and that of lord Apollo. The problem is that this huge battle, fought for the fate of Bell, takes up all... See full review

Durarara!!

Dec 28, 2021

I feel like if they wanted to they could have renamed the show “Seinfeld-San.” Story - 7/10 The first half of this season is a somewhat erratic mishmash of character introductions without much of a real story. You learn about Mikado Ryuugamine and his somewhat secret identity; the extracurricular activities of Shizuo Heiwajima, the Van Gang, and Simon; as well as the ways Izaya Orihara manipulates the whole town.  The only real storyline would be that of Celty Sturluson, a character known as the Black Rider. Celty is a legend around the area of Ikebukuro, a mysterious black clad figure... See full review

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II: Past & Future

Dec 26, 2021

Even for just a quick one episode recap, this just felt bad. It gave the simplistic rundown of the show in the worst way possible, by having Bell and Hestia tell the story. The problem with this is that it was just the same thing repeated over and over again, where Hestia would comment about “Valen whosa what’s her face,” as if it was actually funny the first fifty times they annoyed us with the line within the series.  I’d much rather waste a few hours rewatching the series than the twenty minutes to watch this recap.  Story - 3/10 Animation - 5/10 Sound ... March Comes in like a Lion 2nd Season

Nov 9, 2021

Season one came in like a lion, and season two went out like a show where the writers were illiterate.  Story - 2/10 When we last left Rei Kiriyama he was making friends in the newly formed science and shogi club. Along with with his attempts to become a more social person, he was also trying to balance life and the game of shogi, because he began realizing that while it is how he makes a living, he needs to also make sure it isn’t making him sick and depressed.  Being able to balance his school work and the game of shogi might be tough though, as this year Rei has decided he wants... FLCL: Alternative

Jun 20, 2021

It’s a story we’ve all heard before, about a young adult who is at a pivotal point in their life, unsure what is to come next. We of course all heard that before because it was pretty much the premise of the original FLCL. Story - 3/10 Kana is a seventeen year old girl who sees no direction forward for her life. She’s an average student who’s not particularly good at anything, so the choice between a career path or college both seem equally grim. Because of her uncertainty she starts to live vicariously through her three best friends, Pets, Hijiri and Mossan. While at first... See full review

FLCL: Progressive

Jun 4, 2021

What comes as a surprise to me is that I’m putting a SPOILER ALERT!!! here in my intro, as generally I don’t end up watching a show until about a decade after it’s released, at which point all is fair game. So you’re warned, I give away some plot info below, okay I basically give away all plot info…..which actually may be a good thing if you want to save yourself the two hours wasted on watching this. I’m going to try and be as objective as possible when it comes to this series, but it’s tough, as to me FLCL was one of the finest pieces of art created in the... See full review

March Comes in like a Lion

May 19, 2021

This series really plays out opposite of the phrase in which it’s titled after, as it comes in like a lamb, being a little slow and boring, but goes out like a lion, as an amazing series that goes beyond your typical competitive gaming, or slice of life, anime series. Story - 7/10 Rei is a high school student who has become one of only five people to ever reach such a high level as a professional shogi player while still in his very early teens. Although he learned about shogi from his father, it wasn’t until the deaths of his parents and sister that he really became known as a prodigy... See full review

High-Rise Invasion

May 12, 2021

The best way to cause despair for the humans in this series might just be to have them sit and watch this show. Story - 2/10 The story of characters being transported into a mysterious world is nothing new in anime. Characters have woken up in worlds filled with different yokai, ones filled with all types of video game scenarios, and even in other cartoons, but here they wake up on a series of city rooftops with no way of getting to the bottom, unless you want to take a jump and die.  That way out might be easier than living though, as running around the rooftops are groups of masked humans whose... Kuroko's Basketball

May 7, 2021

Dragon BASKETBall Z, Gundam S.L.A.M., some other horrible attempt at a joke anime name used to point out how this series is completely awful. Story - 2/10 Within Japan’s middle school sports world there’s a basketball team that is talked about in hushed reverence. Known as “The Generation of Miracles” this team had five player’s whose skills rivaled anyone in the country, nay the world, but it was their most unassuming player Tetsuya Kuroko, the mysterious sixth member, that really lead them to victory. The Way of the Househusband

Apr 21, 2021

This is easily heading towards divorce.  Story - 3/10 The show’s concept had the potential of being very funny, what happens when a violent yakuza member changes his life and becomes a doting husband who stays at home to cook, clean, and take care of all the day to day needs of his wife. That being said it just turned into dozens of three minute episodes based around unfunny jokes. Maybe one or two episodes, towards the end, will produce a giggle or two, but that’s all I got out of it. Animation - 3/10 The comic-like style of the show works for a small segment within a larger episode... See full review

ERASED

Jan 9, 2021

I could certainly think of many series that I’d like the chance at going back in time and not watching, but Erased would be no where on that list, instead surprisingly shooting up to one of the best I can remember watching. Story - 8/10 In 1988 a small area of Hokkaido was the hunting ground for a serial killer who liked to prey on young children. Someone who was friends with a few of those children was Satoru Fujinuma, and eighteen years later he still is filled with regret over not only being unable to save his classmates, but also preventing a friend from falsely being convicted of the... Mirai

Dec 24, 2020

While he certainly isn’t lacking in the praise and accolades department, I think this is another film that shows my Mamoru Hosoda should be considered the best active anime writer and director, over those who often choose style over substance. Story - 7/10 Kun is a young boy who’s family just had the pleasure of bringing a new baby girl into the world, but like most young children who have been the center of their parent’s universe for the last few years, it isn’t a joy for him. He now has to fight for his parent’s limited attention, which leaves him frustrated and... See full review

Modest Heroes

Dec 22, 2020

I can think of both many better, and many worse, ways to spend an hour. Story - 5/10 This “Movie” is really three shorts that all deal with someone being heroic in their own way. The first film is Kanini & Kanino, a story about a brother and sister, living in the water, who have to go out and rescue their father after he’s swept away. You wouldn’t really know it from the story, but this is supposed to be about a family of crabs, but you would just think it’s a fantasy story and these people use the little crab like arms as their main hunting tool. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

Nov 17, 2020

This is quite possibly the stupidest show to ever be made……and I love it more than I can say. Story - 5/10 For the most part the show follows your typical school life show, but in a much looser fashion than you might be use to. If there was ever a plot point in an anime series, then TDLoSK touched on it, though often in a mocking manner. Each episode is composed of five to six skits that appeared in the original web series, so every few minutes you get another completely random plot to follow, with only a few stories actually taking up more than one segment.  The overall... It’s like déjà vu all over again. Story - 3/10 Some time has passed since the last series ended, as noted by the current iteration of “Bullet of Bullets” that’s about to take place. As for our crew of characters, they all seem to be more immersed than ever in gaming, as they jump around from MMO to MMO. Dorohedoro: Ma no Omake

I was hyped to see Netflix post a Dorohedoro OVA, but it was just these DVD extras, which ended up making me want a second season so much more. Story - 7/10 These are just six little three to four minute clips that add a little backstory to some of our characters in the series. Stories range from how Nikaido came about owning her restaurant, the process in which sorcerers obtain their masks, and En’s once a decade dance party. Animation - 6/10 The art is much cruder than the show itself, as it’s made to resemble colored pencil drawings or art you’d see in the manga. Obviously... See full review

Story - 1/10 Our show follows a ship of dragon hunters, or drakers, as they fly around the sky killing dragons for profit, or in the case of one annoying character “So he can taste them.” That’s the story. You could possibly make the case for a story being hidden in there about two younger members trying to learn what it means to become a draker, but most of that is hidden way in the back and mostly only talked about in passing, until we reach the end and learn that... Toradora!

Little Tiger, Big Dragon, better than average school life comedy. Story - 5/10 Most of the time when looking at a school life series there’s always a second genre that the plot follows, be it sports, music or zombies, while school itself is more or less a location for events to happen or just background to let you know the age of the characters. The one area that usually isn’t true is in shows when School Life and Romance cross paths, where they instead give you a series that’s more about wacky throw away episodes and everyday occurrences, with the pursuit of love being there just as...
