These titles are based on a Visual Novel: an interactive game with anime-style artwork and an abundance of static graphics. These computer-based games have minimal gameplay, and usually have multiple storylines and endings. Visual Novels are sometimes Eroges.

These anime are like Hunger Games: a group of players are pitted against each other (PVP) until only one remains. Battle Royale-style anime typically feature a High Stakes Game that's Play or Die: a battle to the death.

BL (short for Boys' Love) is a genre that depicts homosexual relationships between men. BL is the predominant term in Japan. In the West, the term Shounen-ai categorizes romantic stories that focus on emotional aspects of relationships, while Yaoi categorizes more of the sexual aspects such as Smut or explicit content.

Blackmail is forcible coercion, convincing someone to do something they'd rather not by threatening to reveal something privileged or secret, or some other form of harm. These anime typically focus on a single instance of blackmail that is central to a story, delving into how and why the situation comes about or its eventual effects on both the blackmailer and the victim.

These anime include frequent, explicit sexual content predominantly aimed at a male audience in Seinen, Yuri, or Bara titles. Sex is used as a plot device and is a primary focus in many of these anime. Like Hentai, Borderline H anime show prolonged sexual acts; but Borderline H anime censor genitalia and other elements with white outlines, mosaics, or opacity.

These anime focus on a romantic or sexual relationship between a boss and their subordinate. The bosses might be CEOs, company presidents, or simply the manager in charge. Employees might be secretaries, assistants, or simply a direct report.

Chibi is Japanese slang for someone small and cute. In Western anime fandom, the term is used to describe characters who are "super deformed", usually with giant heads and tiny bodies for comedic effect. In these anime, several or all of the characters frequently appear in a Chibi state.

Cohabitation is an arrangement where unmarried people who are in a romantic or sexual relationship live together. These anime showcase the ups and downs of cohabitation, such as the little things that happen in day-to-day life, intimacy, or even breakups. Occasionally, cohabitation can involve poly relationships.

This anime features coworkers: people who work together at a job, usually at the same level in the company hierarchy. The coworkers might be shown in their day-to-day Work Life, or spending their time together with drinks after work, or are shown to be involved in a Workplace Romance.

These anime use lowbrow humor to make you laugh, most commonly by sex jokes, toilet humor, bodily functions or crass racial stereotypes. If these anime ask you to pull their finger you should politely decline.

These anime contain scenes of domestic abuse where characters commit acts of violence against their family members, spouse, romantic partner, or other people they live with.

Doujin are a popular type of independently produced and distributed magazine, generally made in small print runs and often written by fans of manga and/or anime, including fan-fiction based on pre-existing characters from other authors. Common themes in these anime include production and distribution, attending doujinshi conventions, or the culture of doujin readers.

Constant panty shots, bouncing breasts and dubious camera angles are hallmarks of an Ecchi title. These titles are usually sexualized and designed to titillate, depicting perverted themes and focusing heavily on the female body. Nosebleeds, suspicious hand positions, faceplanting into bosoms, expressive and exaggerated body parts and other tropes characterize this genre. Ecchi is all about fanservice, while Borderline H and Smut titles focus more on sexual content.
