High School DxD

Nov 5, 2016

This review covers all three seasons.

I expected to hate this anime. I wanted to hate this anime. Unfortunately for me, it made it quite difficult to find anything to hate.

Harems, nakedness, devils, angels, romance, and comedy all mixed into one anime isn't something I would expect to have a decent plot or character development. I certainly don't expect anything serious from it and I expect the writing to be sub-par. I also expect a marathon of cliches. On the other hand, I needed something dubbed so I could do some other stuff while watching and I had heard good things about this anime.

I swear every ten seconds there is a naked nipple on screen. They artist doesn't hide the private parts with hair or objects in just the right place to block the view. Nope. It's there in your face as plain as day. As a 23 year old woman, teenage girls boobs just don't fascinate me. The constant nipple obsession was probably the only thing I can really complain about though.

The plot actually isn't weak. It kept me interested. It has it's problems, but I rather liked the story. It develops at a nice pace and there weren't as many cheesy or cliche moments as I expected. I don't know if I would go so far as to say it's one of a kind, but it has it's unique aspects. The characters are interesting too. The personalities aren't that different from what you would expect from this genre, but they are well developed. Even though the main character could be weak sometimes and he was a total perv, I actually enjoyed him. I enjoyed all the characters...except that one douche bag in the third season. I didn't like him.

The way the writers mixed the comical moments into the serious moments worked well in my opinion. Yes, there were some serious moments. The third season was quite intense at one moment. Even in these moments, the main characters pervertedness did not waver even the slightest, but it was about as tasteful as perverted comedy can be.

I was happy, or not since I didn't want to like the anime, to see that the quality was maintained quite well throughout the second and third seasons. Animes that start out strong in first seasons often fail to retain their good points throughout later seasons. Animes involving supernatural elements usually end up weird and confusing by the third season. It's like suddenly the writers don't know how to write a story or they decide to do something to complex without the right preperations. Sometimes the concepts are just too far out there to be interesting. At the very least, second and third seasons usually end up more mainstream than firsts which make them less interesting. Sometimes they get repetitive (like pokemon....) or they waste too much time on pointless scenes or they do something else wrong. Highschool DXD actually manages to not get weird and confusing, maintains the good points throughout the seasons, sticks to the plot without going in some other direction out of nowhere, and transistions smoothly. I forgot to mention that last part, but the transistions from one season to the next are pretty smooth. They don't skip over large amounts of time. The first episodes don't start off really strange. It's almost like just watching the next episode of the same season. In other words the anime is consistent which isn't very common.

There is one thing that really did it for me. One thing that really annoys the hell out of me is how injury and illness are handled. Even if it's a realistic anime (set in the real world with no magic abilities or fancy technology) characters get beaten up and don't have a scratch on them the next day or fall from the second floor and are perfectly fine or just never get sick or exhausted or anything. Often times there is some way to avoid characters getting hurt like a special power or suit of armor, or a way for them to heal quickly like magic or something. I hate that. Now, yes, they use magic to heal in this anime, although it is at least justified. It's not always a quick fix and death is still a posibility. The main character ends up fainting, falling into a coma, and cutting years off his life span. It isn't perfect, but it is shown and there is some consequence.

In conclusion, it's actually a good anime with an interesting plot and likable characters.
