My Hero Academia

Nov 6, 2018

Warning - this review may contain spoilers

Story-

I wanted to start off by addressing my opinion on the story and the overarching themes within it.  My Hero Academia addresses some common themes in the superhero drama, hinting on ideas of adolescence, insecurity, and rising above difficulties.  I appreciated how well the story forms itself around Midoriya, which will be addressed further on in my review regarding the characters.  I think that the trope of the underdog hero that gets blessed with incredible power, and ultimately grows into the best hero, gets used quite often in the anime world. The season tends to linger on this aspect of weakness and insecurity, while Midoriya learns how to grow in his adolescence. Overall, I found the story to be relatable, but also a bit slow to begin with.

Animation -

I found the animation to be a bit more cartoonish that I normally like. It reminded me of the style used in One Punch Man, with bright vivid colors.  The colors of the characters coorelate well with their personalities, and their character image matches their personality as well. While Midoriya has a smaller stature, as well as a more innocent, rounded looking face, it portrays his overall innocence as a character.  In contrast, the animation for Bakugo, for example also exhibits his personality.  His hair resembling an explosion, while his body is more rigid and aggressively drawn to express his more domineering personality.  I enjoyed that the animators tied those aspects into the animation, I just don't personally enjoy the bright cartoon-ish like animations as much.

Sound -

I believe the sound was one of the best parts of this anime.  The soundtrack was riveting and it went well with what was happening on the screen, while not overpowering any of the action.  It was a good background, while the voices of the characters matched their personalities well. The voice actors had clear enunciation of their words with a trademark sound that impacted me as a viewer.

Characters -

I think this was the next best thing about the anime.  The characters were typical, but they were also enjoyable and made it easy to gravitate towards as a fan.  The characters all had a distinct image and personality that interacted well together to create different plot points. Midoriya initially bothered me with his personality as a very submissive, anti-conflict character, but as the season progresses he develops to become more sturdy in his identity.  Connected to Midoriya, Bakugo was one of those characters that I absolutely couldn't stand.  There are times when I could understand his behavior, but other times I just couldn't get over how unrealistically aggressive he is over everything.  He does not develop much throughout the season, and even throughout the entire series.  He remains the same aggressive Bakugo from season one. As far as the majority of the other characters, they took a backseat to Midoriya.  They would briefly greet the screen to fill the void of time, but other than that, they did not get much development and they had a very one dimensional personality.

7/10 story
7/10 animation
9/10 sound
8/10 characters
7/10 overall
