Scrapped Princess

May 15, 2017

This started off as a true gem. This is exactly my kind of premise; the advanced civilization of the (relative) ancient past, the genre twist, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi with heavy religious undertones, the world where everything you know is wrong, the slow reveal, boy was I excited (think Xenogears). Until about episode 15. This was a great, promising premise plagued by horrific pacing, missed opportunities for depth, and sloppy execution. One of the bigger issues for me was the 4 episodes dedicated to Pacifica's amnesia, during which we learned nothing new (except confirming the underplayed fact... See full review

Dream 9 Toriko x One Piece x Dragon Ball Z Super Collabo Special

May 4, 2015

It was fun to see Toriko and Goku together, but I find One Piece intolerable in general. My big gripe with this was how nerfed all the DBZ characters were, but I guess there wouldn't be much contest with DBZ's overpowered characters otherwise. A Piccolo vs. Coco battle would have been fun, too, but alas.

Devil May Cry

Soooo borrrinnng. Flat characters, no plot to speak of, formulaic battle scenes, repetitive sound track, backgrounds look nice at least. Maybe more appealing to fans of the game.

Black Butler 2

While I thought the underlying concept of this season was interesting, I found its presentation to be terrible. All exposition was delayed until the last two episodes, and the story before that was consequently mostly confusing, but in a frustrating way rather than a good, dramatic way. A lot of the plot devices felt extremely contrived, and a decent premise was wasted. It felt as if the writers didn't really know where the story was going until the last minute. Definitely didn't live up to the first season. I did enjoy the final resolution though, even if the path there wasn't too great. There were also a... See full review

Texhnolyze

This is one of the few stories I have seen that, after finishing it, legitimately gave me bad dreams the next night (not only bad, but epicly bad, most of which I remembered in the morning). I greatly appreciate that. When you finish this, have a comfort blanket and a hot cup of tea ready to go, and maybe a friend or two around for support. Do not keep medications or sharp objects near by until you have fully recovered, and stay away from bridges and high roof-tops. This is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, anime of all time. This is not for the feint of heart or the short of attention span, and also... See full review
