Ooh, nice catch; WotH went after Nausicaa, but somehow didn't make the transfer (fixed now). Also, yes, Gedo Senki was awful. It's hard to say whether I'd rather rewatch Love Hina or Gedo Senki (assuming both were equal length, haha). Ghibli's (as usual) amazing production values would be tempting, but there is something to be said for watching a show that doesn't pretend to be what it's not.

Leaving your comment got me reading your blog posts. They were great, and I wish there were more of them. If we are looking at entire bodies of work, I think it's pretty clear that:

Disney/Pixar > Ghibli > Disney

But that isn't quite fair, because that is the reverse order of number of titles. Probably comparing the best works of each is more equitable, but then it's largely up to personal preference. I mean, they have all produced masterpieces. Hard to compare Finding Nemo with Nausicaa, or Beauty and the Beast with Grave of the Fireflies.

As for which titles are "underrated," I think people should avoid using that entirely. It's an inherently pretentious term. "Underwatched" is perhaps better, albeit it still needs to be carefully applied (no, Mushishi is not underwatched, haha).

Mm hmm.

I had never watched anything by Gonzo, until I picked up Last Exile. I was immediately in love with it (You know... until the mediocre ending just left me disappointed :/)

But everything else I've picked up has just been the exact same. A sort of intriguing plot, and pilot episode, a subtle feeling of something worth watching, and then BAM! you're on episode 8 of pumpkin scissors, and snowboarding mercenaries make you close out of hulu and go to bed disappointed.

Hey there.

I just read your review of Romeo X Juliet, and in it you stated

"Studio Gonzo has an extremely unsavory track record - with only one truly respectable anime under their belt"

I'm incredibly curious as too which one you think that is? (I ask because the only anime I actually liked by them was Last Exile, but I see several that are popular, so I was wondering what your opinion was :D)

The review you letf on Last Exile was great! ^^

Also, I did see the ballet fight... it was odd. But I think that perhaps they tried to make it look like it was from Delphine's point of view... Anyway, I really enjoyed Last Exile even though they left me with a few questions. -.-
