Space Fantasia 2001 Nights

Aug 30, 2010

A short and beautiful story about the inhabiting of a distant planet by a single family. The animation was surprisingly good. Rather than the somewhat minimalistic designs used nowadays, the animation here resembled the better manga or comic books more. Music was also pretty good, although some of the tunes really got on my nerves in the 2nd section of the movie. Definitely recommending this to fans of space-themes and themes of methods of preserving humanity in our ever-corrupting world.

Antique Bakery

Aug 30, 2010

Antique Bakery has a calm pace, some pretty decent comedy and a nice dose of light drama. Full of bishies and mellow colours, the show was really easy on the eyes. The story started out reasonably light-hearted, and slowly tilted a bit more towards drama, all leading to a satisfying conclusion. An excellent show for a surprisingly wide audience: the bishie-fans, fans of light-drama and those looking for something soothing.

Cowboy Bebop

Aug 30, 2010

Cowboy Bebop is one of those shows that's giving you exactly what you'd expect it to. It's about a group of space bounty hunters chasing after and fighting criminals wherever they go. Despite its episodic nature, I personally had little problems working my way through the episodes.Action in this show is plentiful and generally well cheographed. Seeing Spike taking on his foes with fancy fighting moves is something that never gets old. As the amount of Bebop crew-members expands from the original two to eventually five (Ein is a full-fledged member, so shut it XD) certainly does good for the show, as every... See full review

Honey and Clover

Aug 30, 2010

For fans of josei, Honey and Clover will prove to be a joy. Not unlike stories like Paradise Kiss and NANA, Honey and Clover gives a realistic look into the lives and relationships of young adults. Instead of going on a long and dark route of drama, this show takes a more lighthearted approach by taking the building of relationships slow and laying a lot of the shows focus on the development of the individual characters. Comedy was also present plentiful and hilarious (and generally of the non-spastic kind), making the 24 episodes go by smoothly. This is a show I'd wholeheartedly recommend to fans of josei... Akira

Aug 30, 2010

Akira was a lot of fun to watch. The characters are reasonably interesting and the futuristic / rebuild "Neo-Tokyo" setting is quite good (although not unheard of these days, with all the futuristic / post-apocalyptic settings). Giving a proper description of the story is a difficult feat. It's a combination of government conspiracies, ESP powers, motorbike-gangs, mystery and mindfuck. There was just so much going on! Long story short: I enjoyed it, laughed at the simple minded and yet highly successful gang leader, and thought the entire thing was build up pretty well. They could've easily... See full review

Baccano!

Apr 20, 2010

Several questions one could have after watching this show: who are the villains? What defines evil? Or, more likely: why can’t all action shows be like this?! Baccano! is raw. It is violent, disturbing and interesting. But above all, it’s one of the most awesome shows I’ve ever come across. Combining a somewhat interesting mystery story about the history of immortals and a certain train trip in 1930, with characters ranging from hilariously insane to dangerously psychopathic, this show is constantly engaging and entertaining, from start to finish, granted you can stomach some very... Fate/stay night: TV reproduction

Mar 11, 2010

Story If one is to believe the masses, the original Fate/Stay Night anime was a successful VN-to-anime adaption. If one should have a strange brain-parasite telling them to believe me instead, it wasn’t. But debate about the original aside, Fate/Stay Night Reproduction tried to retell the 24-episode tale about magic and swords in a mere 2 hours, and seeing the original contained a bare minimum of “beating around the bush”, they failed miserably. Let’s start by pointing out the big, ugly stain that bleaks all other weak spots in comparison: the pacing. Trying to fit in every... See full review

Sleeping with Hinako

Feb 19, 2010

All the panties and cleavage Training with Hinako had to offer, but without the exciting exercise. Sleeping with Hinako pushes to borders of boredom to a whole new level, with over 25 minutes of repeated scenes of Hinako sleeping. Not pumped up yet? Neither am I.  The 50 minutes trainwreck of drowsiness starts out reasonably exhilarating (compared to the rest of the OVA), with Hinako speaking to the viewer in her cutesy way as she tries to catch sleep. From that moment on, brace yourself, you’re looking forward towards a 25 minute scene with nothing but panty-, cleavage- and other sexy... See full review

URSA minor BLUE

Jan 29, 2010

I enjoyed this a great deal, although saying I'm thrilled would describe the anime wrongly. It's basically a calm, unbridled look into the fantasy of the writer. The story is something with the creativity of a child, while not being overly childish. The animation, quality wise, is quite bad. Everything lacks in detail and shades or often left out. However, the animation style is different from the norm and more alike to some of the old cartoons or picture-books out there, giving it a charm of its own. The music is reserved, but fitting when used, giving off a calm, magical atmosphere. Sound... See full review

The Diary of Tortov Roddle

Jan 27, 2010

Tastes in artstyle and ambiance are something that is different for each individual. I’ll write this anime from my perspective, but if the screenshots in the Anime-Planet entry were already raising doubts at your end, don’t bother. The Diary of Tortov Roddle is a series of very short stories of 2-3 minutes each. They show the peculiarities Tortov comes across as he travels through his fantasy world, riding around on his ... Simoun

Jan 26, 2010

I’m having a bit of difficulty rating this one properly. On one hand, it was very pretty, stylish and had a good, fairly creative storyline and characters. On the other hand, at times the style felt a bit overdone (like in the first still-frame-scream in episode one) and some of the characters felt incredibly shallow in comparison to an otherwise great cast. If I had to give a rough summary of my enjoyment while watching this, admire my paintskills: (Actual experience and recollection might differ) So ye, as you can see, it kinda jumped up and down. While the story itself was... See full review

The Twelve Kingdoms

Jan 26, 2010

Every time I pick up a fantasy title, all the more with long ones like this, I faintly hope on a story that is as gripping as Fullmetal Alchemist was the first time I saw it, early in my anime fandom. It’s something I always know isn’t likely to happen, so imagine my surprise when, even though the story and focus were quite different, The Twelve Kingdoms was equally enchanting!Story Yohko is a somewhat outcast “good girl” from Japan, trying to live up to the expectations of those around her and always trying to please her parents. One day, a mysterious man with long white... See full review

ef: A Tale of Memories.

Jan 24, 2010

I have mixed feelings about this anime. On one hand, nearly everything about it is done superb, but somehow I just couldn’t get myself to care for the characters as much as they were aiming for. Story & Characters The story is split between two lines, each following a troubled love story involving one from a pair of twins. The two storylines play parallel to each other. Neither of the stories meets the other (except for the occasional text message between the twin sisters Chihiro and Kei), but they play side by side, often having half an episode about one tale and half an episode about the... Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru

Jan 24, 2010

A mix of drama, romance and incest, all within a short 45 minutes. Being as short as this, a touchy theme like this has little time to develop tastefully, which is my main problem with Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru, lack of taste. The anime tells the story of Yori, a high-school boy with feelings for his sister. As you’d expect from a forbidden-love show that tries to take itself seriously, feelings of guilt and anxiety fill the main character and he tries to find ways to drift away from her. As much as I like this format if it’s done well (like the case in Koi Kaze), it just felt... See full review

Sasameki Koto

Jan 18, 2010

I’d like to be able call Sasameki Koto a romance anime, but I can’t. You see, in romance anime you’ll first have (optional) episodes full of lingering emotions, desire for a certain person and then (mandatory) romance. That’s right, when I start watching a romance show, be it straight, yaoi or in this case yuri, I want to have some sort of development, be it in a tearful rejection or blissful union. While I enjoyed the majority of the show, filled with cuteness, innocent uncertainties and comedy, it was all in anticipation of something that didn’t happen. With all that... See full review

Aoi Bungaku Series

Jan 18, 2010

Aoi Bungaku, or Blue Literature, is a compilation consisting of 6 short adaptions of classic Japanese literature. Every story is different in its own right, but there definitely is a recurring theme in each of these stories: dark tales, or horror if you must. Most of the adaptions do require a bit of thinking. While there’s nothing nearly incomprehensible like in some mindf*ck series, most stories do have their own meaning. Production value wise, this show is gorgeous. At this point in time, you won’t get much better graphics than this from TV productions (OVA’s and movies are... See full review

Myself; Yourself

Jan 17, 2010

Myself; Yourself starts out as Sana returns to his hometown after being gone for several years. He soon meets up with his old friends and starts hanging out with them. However, everyone has grown since they last met. While the friendships are still in place, everyone has gone through their share of trouble in the past few years. Bluntly put, the first half of Myself; Yourself was an utter disappointment. Jan 13, 2010

Manlier than GAR, tastier than bread and with more powerlevels than DBZ can ever hope to reach, Toriko takes you on an epic quest to hunt down the fierce 300 tough, cold winters old Galara Croc! That’s all there is to know about this 28 minute long OVA. It’s a parody / comedy episode full of muscle, gut, monsters and delicious meat bone. It’s crude, but funny. Stupid, but epic. If you consider your sense of humor not too snobbish, give this beacon of MANLINESS a shot!

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou: Quiet Country Cafe

Jan 12, 2010

It’s strange, although Quiet Country Cafe and its prequel don’t have much difference in storytelling, animation and characters, I enjoyed this OVA a whole lot more than its predecessor. The story follows Alpha, an android looking and acting exactly like a regular human, around as she lives her life in and around her café in the Japanese countryside. Its way of storytelling is very tranquil and slow-paced, with lots of focus on scenery and emphasis on very normal emotions of peace, minor worries and slight happiness. It’s something I normally find very soothing to watch, but... See full review

Kämpfer

Jan 11, 2010

They seem to be popping up everywhere lately: fighting-competition anime loaded with bishoujo's. So is Kampfer, a show chockfull of stereotypes like the klutzy glasses girl, childhood friend, oblivious bishoujo idol and hot student-council president, all taken straight from the “Harem 101” manual. Story Kampfers are girls with the ability to magically transform into fighter-babes. Jan 10, 2010

I love ISSUPians, they come up with the best recommendations, yes, even for non-tit, loli or trapshows. This time it was NimirRa’s rec for Daughter of Twenty Faces, which had possibly my new all-time favorite female character in the lead role. Story When Chizuko, a bright girl and fan of detective novels, finds out her foster parents have been slowly poisoning her, there is nothing she can do but starve herself. Nearly at the end of her line, she gets “stolen” away from her family by her idol, notorious masterthief Twenty Faces. Happy to find a new family in the Twenty Faces gang... See full review

I wanted to like it, I really did. I was expecting a combination of a fun, yet soothing story, a scenic setting and lots of fitting, calming music. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou only managed to get the scenery part right, and just barely. Story wise, there isn’t all too much going on. I’ll try to get it across as exciting as possible. Himitsu: The Revelation

Jan 8, 2010

Always nice to find some surprise win in anime you almost never see anyone talk about. Also the case with this one. It's basically a crime investigation show with a little twist: the brains of deceased people are used to look into their memories to find out who the killer was. It starts out being quite enjoyable, but not much special, with a couple of episodic stories about solving cases. However, as the story goes on, the different cases start to intertwine, plottwists that influence the entire main cast happen and most importantly, they more or less keep it from being repetitive by introducing... Hoshizora Kiseki

Jan 3, 2010

A lightly melancholic show with bits of astronomy and romance as main themes, that’s how I’d describe Hoshizora Kiseki. It’s a calmly paced, 27 minute short web episode with quite a decent story for such a short time span. It has a high “Shinkai”-feel to it (the director of Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised In Our Early Days and others), but only lightly evokes human emotion in the viewer, something that fitted this particularly story well. The animation was, to me, surprisingly good for a single-episode web anime, and that isn’t saying all too much... See full review

Aria the Origination

Nov 23, 2009

Ah, how I love this show. Certainly, the Aria series are full of flaws, contain almost zero plot twists, have very slow character development and have nearly nothing going on for most of the time, which is also why there are only very few people I’d immediately recommend this to, but it absolutely excelled at what it was trying to do: creating a slow paced slice-of-life show in a gorgeously idyllic setting. Story Just like the previous two seasons, Aria the Origination starts off with a hand full of episodes about the training days of Akari, Aika and Alice and the small adventures they go on... Puppet Princess

Nov 16, 2009

Is gore-comedy a genre? If so, then Puppet Princess deserves to be in it, for this show has a lot of both! The short 40 minute OVA alternates bloody decapitations and eviscerations with ecchi jokes and eyebrows that will make the upper-eye entities from the FLCL cop seem like midgets. The plot has quite a lot of potential. More than anything, Puppet Princess feels like a solid introduction episode that will leave you wanting for more. The rather obvious downside to this is that there isn’t any. It concludes fairly nicely, but also builds up for a future story that was never made. But since... See full review

Papillon Rose OVA

Nov 16, 2009

For those expecting a soft-ecchi Sailor Moon parody, here’s a little warning for you: there will be vibrators, and foot fetishists, and ignitable breast milk, even a bit of bestiality towards the ending. Granted, it’s not a hentai OVA, but it gets close more than once. Normally, a huge amount of ridiculous ecchi makes for a good so-called “funnybad” show. This wasn’t -as much- the case as I hoped it to be with Papillon Rose. While it certainly wasn’t boring, it wasn’t exactly hilarious for its badness either, but rather somewhere in between uninteresting and... See full review

Hell Girl

Nov 1, 2009

This being the show I "enjoyed" the most this Halloween with A-P (which was filled with great shows, btw), I just had to write something about it. First of all, calling Jigoku Shoujo a horror anime is only addressing one part of the show. More than anything, it’s a collection of revenge stories, centered around themes like bullying, family problems, manipulation and alike, a bloody good one at that. The first seven or eight episodes passed very slowly for me. While I thought those stories were mostly brilliant (safe for one or two), they felt like they lasted an hour each. After... Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek

Oct 30, 2009

This 20min. short movie delivered exactly what I hoped it would, a soft horror story. Kakurenbo is about a group of kids who decided to play an ancient version of the Hide & Seek game, one involving hiding from demons. After they arrived at the “so called” Demon City, in which the game is to be played, they find out that there's a lot more to their joke than they thought there was. All in all, Kakurenbo is a tame, non scary “horror” short movie, which still manages to give you that Halloween feeling and even has quite a creepy ending. It isn’t exceptionally exciting... DearS

Oct 27, 2009

This is a review based on only the first episode of DearS, after which it was dropped. There you go, I just saved you from 22 minutes of shit, or motivated you to watch it just for the sake of raging. In both cases: Yes, this screenshot gives off the feeling the entire first episode had, pretty much. After reading two beautiful rants about it, I just had to see what it was all about, and it was worth it. What a wonderful spectrum of terribleness! This anime wastes no time being good and starts the episode off with a slideshow of low-quality scenery shots (in the mist) and ends this scene with a... See full review
