It could have been great, the setting is interesting, the mechs are decently cool, the plot has intrigue, and the characters seem like they might have interesting backstories.
BUT, instead...
We get shallow episode plots, bland dialogue, a very little world building. It just doesn't get you engaged, and bring you along for the ride.
If they spent less time on people singing, and emoting, and more time on good character development this might have been better than shows like Aldnoah Zero, or Full Metal Panic.
It's not though, it is nothing special in any way. The animation is average (which isn't bad, but it's not impressive) and a little CG janky like the dancing in that zombie Idol series. The 86 was nearly a home run with a little bit of tweaking. This though... It dropped the ball in almost every area. The fights seem forced into each episode like, "wait we have to have our obligatory battle every episode" Often the combat isn't set up just wedged in. The animation for the combat and the scenes themselves are very shallow, you don't feel any intensity and when there is a struggle it just happens it isn't built up. Basically imagine R2D2 just suddenly feels degected and the lasers on the x-wing stop firing (ok I guess we will stop struggling and just die, not even a plot point it's just deus ex happening).
Like the characters: There's loads of raw materials to work with, they just... don't they allude to depth but instead have them be flat and are largely unable to have engaging interactions between the other characters. You will see, they have the rare solid exchange, but it just makes you more aware of how bland the rest of it is.
The Sound is ok, the aforementioned singing is good but when they are this early into the show and they spend so much time on it when they could be building the world or having characters interact, delving into the plot...
You may really like this but it's all a little simplistic for my preference . This is the kind of series where it would likely benefii from having someone else dig in and draw out all gems strewn about. Then make it something truly spectacular, the kind of anime that is breathtaking and awe inspiring.
BUT if you are curious, give it a watch and see what you think. I don't regret watching it, I just wish it were better.
....
If you want mech anime that do some of these aspects well (not necessarily all of them simultaneously, but if you are looking for something better...):
86, and the first season of MuvLuv, Aldnoah, all of those are good at building consequences, and having more intensity (some instances mlre than others). MuvLuv is probably the worst of those, but, there are others you are better off checking out before Synduality Noir.
