The Boy and the Beast

Mar 3, 2016

The Boy and the Beast is a quite interesting movie. Honestly, I'm not really a fan of Hosoda, but this one was way better than the Wolf Children.  The story's about a young boy named Ren who meets a beast when he was lost. The beast takes the little boy as his disciple. The beginning is very classic, with an important "Miyazaki-touch". But if the plot is great in the first half of the movie, the second part is very incoherent, with big errors in the story telling. Of course, the romance was very dispensable, and the end reminds me a bad horror movie. After a refreshing beginning, it's a... See full review

This Boy is a Professional Wizard

This show is the first one in the TV format in the Kono Danshi series, and it's really different from the other shorts of Soubi Yamamoto.  I love the graphic style, and the "self-published" way, with these lights - inspiration from Makoto Shinkai ? -, minimal animation and this kind of drawing. It's also a very good use of Live2D in an anime. However, I think the choice of the format is wrong. I would prefer a short of 30 min, for the continuity of the story. And, finally the naivety of the characters and of the story isn't in a "TV style". I feel this is a short which was... See full review

This Boy Suffers from Crystallization

Mar 2, 2016

Simple story, with simple characters, and simple animation. All in this short is simple, and that's its main strenght. The love story was very cute, and as always, I love the work of Soubi Yamamoto with the ambiance, the drawng and the design. It's like a book for children, and I think this kind of naivety is the very important in the image I have of this short. I can't say I don't like it, but I can't deny that the low budget is omnipresent, and it's a pity. The short has a real soul, and I'm sure it was made with a lot of love and passion.

Angel's Egg

What can I say about Tenshi no Tamago ? It's such a beautiful movie, one of these movies that can change your life, your taste, your vision of the world. However, I can't deny it's a very abstract and strange movie. The ambiance is so sweet, so dark and so poetic ; like the flavour of a Baudelaire's poem. There are some memorable scenes, which present a very acute sense of aestheticism, in a contemplative journey.  Tenshi no Tamago is obviously an experiment. But it features all the caracteristics of a chef d'oeuvre, with a mysterious and poetic world, strong visuals, design and... See full review
