Killing Bites

Jan 18, 2022

Killing Bites is a very ecchi and complicated show. It is an action anime through and through. I understand why most people are willing to give it a lower rating because there were a lot of points in the anime that made me uncomfortable and disappointed, but the overall story isn't bad and some of the characters are unique. However, this anime struggles with what a lot of anime that need tension struggle with, the infamous 'Perverted Characters' which is why the character portion of the rating took a hit. Personally I am incredibly tired of this lazy character trope whose entire being revolves around rape, a tool used when the story needs high stakes and tension so you just throw in a rapist at the main heroine and call it a day. Be warned if you are uncomfortable with rape, you should probably avoid this anime. Another issue it struggles with is pretty obvious from the picture, fanservice. You will get a lot of it and sometimes it completely takes you out of the scene. Then there is the characters, you will hate many of them and love only a few. This is an anime filled to the brim with pshychos and sadists and it seems the only normal one is the MC. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though. It almost adds a sense of realism because they are all Therianthropes, giving them an animalistic behaviour. The problem with the characters is that many of them are underutilized, whether they had too little screen time to showcase their goals/personalities or whether they straight up died too fast for you to care. But enough about the negatives, Killing Bites still has some good points. The fight scenes and animation were incredible and creative, the sound effects during the fights reminded me of JoJo's, and the story was gripping enough to binge in one sitting. If you're interested in an anime that is action packed then this is one to look out for.

[SPOILER ALERT]

[RANT ON CHARACTERS AHEAD]

[DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED]

A HUGE problem I have with this anime is that they killed off two of the coolest characters. Crocodile and Gorilla. They had so much potential and were such interesting characters! But instead they killed them off, but for some UNHOLY reason decide that maybe the Cobra dude should be brought back from the brink of death...REALLY!! You kill off two great characters and revive a rapist whose entire character revolves around raping?! We're not talking about someone who raped another character, we're talking about someone who, when given screentime, attempts to rape every chick in the vicinity! And doesn't shut up about it! Absolutely horrible move unless the Manga elaborates on this creative decision. Another issue with the characters is the uneccessary backstory. Some of the characters that were given backstories barely lasted a few episodes before they were immediately killed off. There is no point to giving a backstory to FOUR different characters if all FOUR are going to die no less than FOUR episodes later. It's just a lot of unexplored character/plot potential. Finally, the fragility of characters. Some of these brutes were hyped up early in the show only to die in a matter of seconds. Gorilla for example was always calm and collected, perched on tree branches like a Chad completely unphased by his powerful competitors, and then boom! Dead. Just like that. Barely put up a fight either. Oh and the giant Bear? Lasted like ten seconds max. I don't think he died, but man he barely had any screen time before getting taken out. Some characters seemed to drop like flies especially after given seemingly rushed build up and spontaneous flashbacks. The only character that lived up to their hype was Pangolin. He just couldn't die, and that was to be expected with how they introduced him. Collectively, these are a few of the reasons the character portion of the rating took a MAJOR hit and unfortunately the anime as a whole as well. If the anime's events were to be stretched to at least 20 or more episodes, I'm sure they could have fleshed things out better.

8/10 story
8.5/10 animation
8.6/10 sound
6.5/10 characters
7.2/10 overall
