Sword Art Online Movie: Ordinal Scale

May 24, 2017

Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale has things in it that are amazing and things in that are terrible, but this is the one incidence where I think in a Sword Art Online, the bad has outweighed the good.  Ordinal Scale aims to be a big epic for the franchise, however, it comes off a rather hackneyed idea that doesn’t stand up to close scrutiny.  The character motivations don’t really work, the plot is all over the place, and while it has an excellent build up, it doesn’t have a satisfying conclusion and the whole thing doesn’t work overall.  While I do think this will appeal... your name.

Oct 17, 2016

Your Name is a very, very, very good film.  I really enjoyed it for its unique style, really good characters, a well told story with some good performances and brilliant animation.  It’s easily Makoto Shinkai’s best film to date and has really converted me to him as a director.  I’m still not convinced he is the next Miyazaki since I think Mamoru Hosoda has managed to achieve a lot of what he has achieved in 4 films as opposed to this one film.  That is not to detract from the man, he has done an excellent job in creating a film that made me root for the characters and... BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad

Jul 21, 2016

this is a damn near perfect series. I like coming of age stories and this is possibly the best one i've ever seen dealing with a high school student struggling to find identity and only finding through a new love of rock music and the band he joins. the characters are great, the music written for it is great and makes me wish the soundtrack was aviliable on itunes and the animation is really good. every eppisode feels important and it avoids several clieches of music shows and movies and creates a rather realistic looks at up and coming bands and the music industry. I loved it. i could conced that some of... See full review

When Marnie Was There

Jul 20, 2016

I loved When Marnie Was There. I loved it so much, this film was so fantastically written, so fantastically animated and it was a joy to experience. I loved the characters, the story line was great and engaging the mood is set perfectly. The characters are designed brilliantly, it’s just an all round excellent film and it doesn’t appear that too much has been lost in translation between Britain and Japan. If this is to be the final film from Studio Ghibli, they are going out on a high because this film was excellent and really should have won the Oscar for Best Animated Film. I liked Inside Out... Romeo x Juliet

May 22, 2016

this is not only one of my favourite anime series, it's my favourite shakespeare adaptation. the changes to the source material may not go down well with purists, but with myself not being a fan of the origonal story I really took to the changes and was glad a writter wasn't afraid to really reintrpret this. the characters were enjoyable, the action is good, the story was really engaging and the perfect number of episodes and the romance is very belivable and gives the characters great chemistry and unlike the orignoal story were given enough time to see it develop.  my only real complaint is the use... Snow White with the Red Hair

May 12, 2016

the first season is realtivly strong with it's only majour weakness being that a couple of characters feel underutilised. the romance is done realativly well and isn't rushed giving time for development and isn't dragged out to within an inch of it's life like many other romance anime. the action scenes are few and far between but when they are done they're done well. the animation is really good and i'm glad that there are still some studios maiking well done 2D anime. it's a bit of slow ride but it's a good ride. i don't like it as much as Eureka Seven, Clannad After Story or Romeo X Juliet but i had fun... Clannad Movie

May 5, 2016

this movie is an aweful adaptation. the characters and story are not nearly as good as the anime series and because it's only 1 hour and 30 minutes way too much is cut and condensed in such a way that it doesn't work and gives no emotion to anything and considering how emotional the series was that's unforgivable. the relationship isn't believable, there are a ton of underused characters and the changes make no sense and just make me mad. the animation is compitont but doesn't suit the style of story there telling and isn't helped by the terrible editing. the music is compton other than the mangled version... Clannad After Story

Mar 20, 2016

I love this series. it's one of the most emotional series i've ever watched. I loved the chracters, the story was great and even made me feel very emotional, and despite the fact i'm not a fan of Moei Anime i really liked the character design and animation. i've heard a lot of people to criticse the ending but I don't have a problem with it cause by the end it felt well foreshadowed and really the only way they could have ended the series. plus it's not as if Clannad had no paranormal elementds in it prior to this and I ending left me completly satisfyed even if it is a little like a richard curtis ending... Eureka Seven AO

Mar 20, 2016

this is a massive disapointment it really is. I Love Eureka Seven but this isn't a great follow up. it's biggest mistake is that it never firmly establishes how exactly it acts as continuation leaving long time fans to be confused and it doesn't work as a stand alone series cause it assumes you saw the first season. also everything feels like a downgrade Ao isn't a very intresting protagnist and the crew of the pied piper aren't as memorable as the Gecko state. the plot is passable if a bit all over the place and has the nerve to gives us a Deus Ex Machina ending which didn't give me the satisfaction that i... Dragon Ball Z Movie 15: Resurrection 'F'

Mar 20, 2016

Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F is a really good time for Anime fans. I would really recommend it, though I would only recommend it to Dragon Ball fans at this point because you really need to have the back story to know what is going on, particularly to fans who saw the previous film Battle of Gods, which I must be honest, I do think is a superior film out of the two as it had a better plot and was a more fitting tribute to everything that is great about Dragon Ball. The only thing holding this one back is that it had slightly less plot and a bit of an anti-climax and less character moments which I think is... See full review

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

Mar 20, 2016

Overall, my thoughts are that this film is excellent. It’s genuinely a brilliant animated film that keeps up Studio Ghibli’s reputation and if this is to be Isao Takahata’s final film, he is going out on a brilliant film, and this is by far his best work to date. My only major complaint with the film is that a few of the darker moments feel the film should have warranted a PG rating rather than the U rating that it did get and I think a few parents might be a bit shocked by some of the things that are allowed in Japanese kids films. I was aware that there were plans to censor certain... See full review

Harlock: Space Pirate

Mar 20, 2016

Does Harlock Space Pirate have any issues? Yes of course it does. The motives of the villains towards the end of the film feel really stupid and feel like they would incriminate them even further than they already have been and the film’s early pacing feels a bit off and I’m not sure these characters will appeal completely to everyone, but for me personally these are definitely negatives that aren’t gonna bother me too much. Harlock Space Pirate is absolutely fantastic. I had an absolute ball with it and it was just the film I needed on the back of seeing ‘Unfriended.&rsquo... See full review

Giovanni's Island

Mar 20, 2016

I cannot recommend Giovanni’s Island enough. Yes, it’s a very difficult film at times to sit through but it’s very heart warming at times and it’s also very brilliant in its style and its substance. This is a story you won’t forget for a long time for both the good and the bad of these characters stories. I’d recommend this to people who don’t necessarily watch anime as I think potentially this could convert them to what this sub- genre of films is doing and how there are so many great films to come out of Japan and why this isn’t up for a BAFTA and Oscar I... Fuse: Memoirs of a Huntress

Mar 16, 2016

Fuse Memoirs of a Hunter Girl is actually a genuinely good movie. I am really going to recommend it, and I would also recommend getting the special edition which contains the Blu Ray and the DVD disc and it’s great on Blu Ray where the animation really pops out in High Definition, plus you get a really neat little art book that shows off the designs of the world and the characters well. There are more reasons to recommend it than just that, the film has a lovingly crafted story about romance and identity, there are a ton of great characters, a ton of great animation and some really interesting ideas... Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers

Mar 16, 2016

man what a massive letdown. Eureka Seven is my favourite anime but i can't bring myslef  to like this movie. it's main problems are that it tells a story that is way too rushed and as a result doesn't nearly have enouth of the heart and pacing that made the series great. also the charaters have really been screwed over espichally the Gekko crew who are all extemly unlikable and this is coming from someone that loved these guys. the ending is also really confusing and doesn't leave the very satisfying note that the series left and i know a movie can't do everything a series can but  i do have to... Patema Inverted

Mar 7, 2016

can’t stress how much love and care went into the animation for this. It has to be seen to be believed. There are a ton of things I could easily mention in regards to other ways, as to how the animation works so well but it would be giving away too many plot points. You have to see it to believe it and that’s really how I can sum up the art style and visuals of this film. Is there a negative I can say about this film? Well there a few of points I possibly could bring up on technical levels, like as I mentioned a few things are kind of left open to audience interpretation, and some of the... See full review
