Solo Leveling

Aug 25, 2020

Seeing all these reviews I didn't know if I should write one but since about 90% of them gave it a 9 or 10 overall score I thought there needed some balancing. I read the story twice. Once in 2018 with all the chapters available at the time and once now in late August 2020. I have to say that it helped see some flaws that my past self overlooked because of the awesomeness of the character and the fights.

This is a good manwha. I don't think you'll get bored reading it and you'll definitely enjoy the experience. The first 10 chapters are what makes the story for me. We get to see the mc struggle and fight for his life even though he's the weakest. After that all we want for him is to level up and beat up monsters and boy do we get served. Everything about him is amazing and you just crave more and more. The art is really making that manwha shine. But most importantly what I love the most was the solo aspect. It was the first time for me to read a fantasy story where the mc doesn't have annoying party members, no overbearing girls, just him and his badass undead army.

But if we put all that aside, the story in itself isnt that special. In fact it's the Korean version of the isekai fantasy manga set in a medieval Europe or the reincarnation cultivation manhua set in ancient China. So the genre is pretty popular and we have dozens of these types with dungeons popping up and people gaining abilities. The problem is there is very little world building, although I admit that the story gets deeper towards the later chapters.

- The power levels are a mess. First of all you are predetermined to a specific rank when you "awaken". I don't know if that means that a 14 yo with S rank abilities can beat up a 20 yo with D rank. And because of that system it's difficult to gauge how powerful people are in a same rank since they don't even have levels. He is almost invincible in his country in a matter of months and it's hardly believable even with his abnormal growth rate. I feel like the author just chose to make the others appear weak to make him shine. They can never beat monsters by themselves and he has to come in and save the day.

- There is absolutely no character development for anyone, MC included. He just push up his way into handsomeness and suddenly he's cool now. I don't complain because I like it but it's not consistent from a story standpoint. Does him becoming physically stronger in a matter of weeks make him automatically more mature and strong mentally? The change is too abrupt. Also something that disappeared as he grew strong are the strategies he used to defeat monsters. You could feel the struggle and every battle was a life or death situation. Now he doesn't even do much and I think it's too fast. He's just cool for the sake of being cool.

The way the mc acts is also a bit weird to me. Sometimes he doesn't want his power exposed but some others he just show it off. He says he want to create a guild but there doesn't seem to be a reason and he doesn't seem to care that much about it either. I feel like it's just a tool to create that romance thing. I just hope we won't have romance here because that mawha does not need it. He's rich but says he can't live his home but still pays the rent. Like isn't he rich enough to buy up the whole building? He keeps walking on the streets like if he was normal. He doesn't raid dungeons to make more money for his guild. I mean this whole guild thing seems more like a plot device than anything. Anyway, there's a lot of things to say about it and it would be too long.

5/10 story
9/10 art
5/10 characters
6.5/10 overall
