Well... it's a little more complicated and insidious than that. It feels to me like Ainz is portrayed as: "he's bad, but everyone else is worse, so he's in the right by default, and good guys suck anyway."
"Ainz kills alot of people in overlord i agree, but they weren't good people either."
Arche and her friends from Foresight were good people than Ainz murdered (or worse) just because they had unknowingly "insulted" his friends.
"he didn't straight out murder kids here or harmless prisoners..."
Wait until you see what he does in the later volumes of Overlord...
"for example, i think askeladd from VS suffers from this problem more. the writer obviously wants you to sympathize with him but the things he do in the series is so bad."
I haven't seen Vinland Saga, so I can't have an opinion on Askeladd. But I think that "the writer wants you to sympathize with a villain" is different from "the writer wants you to be on the villain's side". And in Overlord, it seems to me that the author wants you to think that Ainz is a wonderful person and that the atrocities he commits are justified because "might makes right" and "it's for the greater good".
"I appreciate your opinion and comment on my profile. it is interesting to read different views."
"yagami light the main character from death note (a very well acclaimed show) is also glorified for his actions of killing small-time criminals who doesn't deserve to get the death penalty."
Well... that's not really the case. Death Note doesn't glorify Light Yagami's killings. In fact, it is stated that Light, in the end, is nothing but a murderer and we aren't supposed to be on his side.
With Ainz, the author clearly wants us to like and admire him and think he's a great leader and wonderful guy even as he commits atrocities. That's my problem with "Overlord".

"Was ainz ever portrayed as the good guy though?"
